Playroom floor sofa builds, from one piece to a whole fort
A kids floor sofa is a kit of blocks. These are eight builds parents actually ordered, with the inches that made each one work.
SaveThe quick answer
A kids floor sofa is a set of foam blocks, a seat, a back and two arms, sized to the child and the room for awake play and lounging. Real builds run from an 18 x 48 in (46 x 122 cm) gift couch to five 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) pads. For young children, a soft wipe-clean microfiber with zip-off covers is the first pick.
A sofa that comes apart on purpose
A kids floor sofa is not one object. It is a seat, a back, two arms, sometimes a second layer. Children take it apart within the hour. That is the design working.
Parents ask three things. How big. Which fabric. Will it wash. The eight kids floor sofas below answer with real inches, from playrooms and kids' rooms.
One plain line. A floor sofa is for awake time: climbing, reading, lounging, a sleepover for children old enough for one. It is not for a baby's sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that infants sleep on their backs, on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard, with no pillows or soft bedding.

Eight builds, block by block
01A past project
A two-layer linen play couch with three back cushions
A parent in the US drew her own play couch: six base cushions stacked in two layers, three back cushions on top. She wanted linen close to a velvet color she liked, so she ordered samples first. Only the under-seat pieces could not be tufted in her drawn shape.
The takeaway: Draw the build first. The drawing is the order.
02A past project
Five 28 x 64 in floor pads in five colors
A parent in the US wanted five 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) floor cushions, durable but soft, for her children and their friends. The workshop suggested its soft microfiber, more durable than linen and thinner than velvet. She chose mustard, purple, blue, green and orange.
The takeaway: A soft microfiber holds up to a houseful and still feels soft.
03A past project
A taller velvet floor sofa for a five-year-old
A parent wrote to the workshop wanting the tufted velvet floor set fuller and higher, for a five-year-old. For a seat 35.4 in (90 cm) wide and 17.7 in (45 cm) deep and high, the workshop proposed a 12 in (30 cm) foam base under a 6 in (15 cm) tufted cushion, with a matching backrest, in khaki or mustard.
The takeaway: Height comes from the base. Looks come from the top.
04A past project
A mustard sleepover set for grandchildren
A grandparent in the US ordered a mustard floor sofa with a 23 x 40 in (58 x 102 cm) seat, plus an extra base cushion with corner ties so the two tie together as a bed. The backrest was held up in transit, and its replacement came from a different dye lot. The workshop remade it to match.
The takeaway: Ask for a whole set cut from one dye lot and shipped together.
05A past project
Velvet or teddy for a toddler playroom
Parents in the US choosing a velvet or teddy floor sofa for a toddler playroom asked what was inside and whether anything carried flame retardants. The answer was plain. The fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239), and the standard fabric is not fire-retardant.
The takeaway: Settle questions about certification and treatments before production.
06A past project
An 18 x 48 in gift couch that arrived short
A buyer in the US measured an 18 x 48 in (46 x 122 cm) gift couch about 4 in (10 cm) short on arrival. Vacuum-packed cushions travel squeezed and need time, and some stretching, to come back to size. Handmade pieces also carry a 1 to 2 in (2.5 to 5 cm) tolerance.
The takeaway: Photograph the tape when you measure.
07A past project
A pink corduroy floor sofa for a child with allergies
A family in the US had a son with allergies and new hardwood floors. They asked for spare pink corduroy covers; the covers zip off and wash, so one set stays on while the other is washed. For the floors, the workshop made a protective grip for the metal frame bars.
The takeaway: Put a grip or felt under metal bars on wood.
08A past project
A beige easy-clean floor cushion instead of velvet
A parent picked velvet for a playroom floor cushion because it looked cozy. The workshop pointed out that the soft fabric already on the order was soft enough for children and easier to clean, and the parent kept it. Another family chose the same fabric in beige.
The takeaway: Choose the fabric for the spill, then the color.
Which cloth for a playroom floor sofa
The fabric decides how a playroom looks a month later. More in kid-friendly cushion fabric and the performance and pet-friendly fabrics. The arches in the photos are corduroy.
| Fabric | With children | Cleaning | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft microfiber | The first pick for young children | Wipes clean | More durable than linen, thinner than velvet |
| Velvet | Very strong under daily use | Marks lift off the pile | The most stain-resistant of the range |
| Linen | An easy-clean range | Tufted linen is wiped, not washed | Untufted versions have zippered covers |
| Corduroy | Soft, common on play couches | Covers wash at 86°F (30°C), delicate | Ribs can split under very hard use |
| Striped 100% cotton | Harder going with kids | Stains more easily | Skip it for a playroom |
Children measure comfort with their whole body. If a parent will lie down to read too, order the largest kids floor sofa, not the standard size.

How the blocks arrive
Pieces travel vacuum-packed and fit through a normal door. Lay them flat and keep everyone off for 48 hours. Foam needs 48 to 72 hours to recover, sometimes a week. The play couch uses T28 foam, about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³), and can go to 32 density, about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), for a firmer seat. The foam firmness finder explains the difference.
Blocks, not furniture. Covers that zip. Awake, always.
Parents' questions
- A common question
What size floor sofa works for a reading nook I'll share with my kids?
The workshop's answerKids' pieces are child-scaled, so if you'll lie down and read together, take the largest size; the large kids corner is 47 in (120 cm). A 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) couch suits a big bedtime reading area. Any size or corner shape is made from your measurements and a photo.
- A common question
The tufted floor cushion has no zipper. How do I clean it?
The workshop's answerIn place, by hand. Wipe the surface gently with a damp cloth, with a little mild soap and water on marks. If you want covers you can machine wash, choose the untufted foam version, which has a zippered, removable cover.
- A common question
Can I buy a second set of covers in another color for the floor sofa?
The workshop's answerYes. Replacement covers without foam are sold by size, as a set of 2 arm and 2 bottom covers, in any shop fabric; pick a code from the sample charts. Extra covers are made for the kids corner sofa too, and a new set is the usual fix when a zipper breaks.

Questions buyers ask next
Is it safe for a baby to nap on a kids floor sofa?
No. Floor sofas are for awake play, reading and lounging. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that infants sleep on their backs, alone, on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard, with no pillows, cushions or soft bedding.
What sizes does the kids corner floor sofa come in?
The kids corner cushion is foam with a removable cover, about 8 in (20 cm) thick, in 31.5 x 31.5 in (80 x 80 cm), 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm), which is the best seller, and 47 x 47 in (120 x 120 cm).
Can one long floor cushion cover a whole playroom wall?
Up to a point. An architect in the US asked for a 38 x 170 in (97 x 432 cm) tufted velvet cushion, 8 in (20 cm) thick, for a playroom. A 170 in piece could not be made whole, so it was planned in three sections that butt together.
