A dusty rose bay window seat cushion, and the numbers that get a bay right the first time
Nate reads a textured rose cushion turning three angles in morning sun, then lays out the drawing, the code and the messages that spare you a remake.
Dusty rose crinkle-textured cushions follow the angles of a cream bay, lit by morning sun.
The quick answer
To order a bay window cushion right the first time, send the bottom length, top length, depth, straight-end lengths and thickness, mark every notch or cut in the window, and approve the shop's drawing before cutting. The angled sides follow from those numbers: 90, 52, 27 and 6 in give about 28 in. Expect a tolerance of about ±1 in.
Three angles, one color, and the sun doing the rest
A bay window cushion is the one place where a quarter inch counts three times, once for each angle. This one is dusty rose, a textured boucle that catches the low sun until it looks almost like velvet, cut to turn with each facet of a cream paneled base.
The color came from the room, not a catalog. The faded red runner, the pink cosmos in a stoneware pitcher and two pressed-flower prints all carry a version of it, so the seat reads gentle rather than sugary. A grayed rose repeated in one or two small things is how you use pink without building a nursery.
There are no pillows. The bay's shape and the light are enough, and a slim brass arc lamp and the flowers stand to either side like bookends. That restraint is also practical: nothing hides the ends, which is exactly where a bay cushion shows whether it was measured right.
For the cloth, see boucle and teddy and its snag and care notes. For the shape, start with bay window cushions and the bay window calculator. How many facets does your bay have?

The numbers a bay order needs, and the one it does not
| Measurement | This bay | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom length | 90 in (229 cm) | The long edge; sets the overall size |
| Top length | 52 in (132 cm) | The short edge; with the bottom it fixes the angle |
| Depth | 27 in (69 cm) | Measured at 90 degrees, never on a diagonal |
| Straight ends | 6 in (15 cm) | Leave them out and the corners come back pointed |
| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm) | The standard; confirm it in writing |
| Angled side | About 28 in (71 cm) | Calculated, not measured: 19 in across and 21 in up |
A remake that taught the geometry
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop after the first bay cushion arrived too long, too narrow, and with pointed ends where square ones should have been. Something in the numbers had gone astray.
The shop redrew the sketch: bottom 90 in (229 cm), top 52 in (132 cm), depth 27 in (69 cm), 6 in (15 cm) straight ends, 4 in (10 cm) thick. Those four lengths leave the slant no freedom. Half of 90 minus 52 is 19 in across; 27 minus 6 is 21 in up; the diagonal is about 28 in (71 cm). The sketch had said 24 in, so the slant was hiding four inches.
Then the buyer found two more cuts in the window frame and sent a new diagram. The shop turned it into a drawing for approval before anyone cut. The cushion was remade free as goodwill, the buyer covered the shipping and kept the first one, and the second fit perfectly.
What to copy, partner: send the master dimensions, mark every notch, and do not order until you have approved a drawing. Tolerance is kindness to your future self. See notched cushion cut-outs and what to send for a custom quote.
Approve a drawing before a bay window cushion is cut: one missed notch, or a slant guessed 4 in short, is the difference between a fit and a remake.

Buyer questions: tolerance, color matching and spare backrests
- A common question
How close to my numbers will a handmade cushion come out?
The workshop's answerThe product description states a tolerance of about ±1 in (±2.5 cm), because cushions are handmade and foam is flexible; about 3/8 to 3/4 in (1 to 2 cm) is normally treated as acceptable. Every cushion is measured before it ships.
- A common question
Will a backrest from you match the color of a sofa I bought somewhere else?
The workshop's answerThe shop cannot guarantee the tone, but it will be close if you choose the nearest color. Send a photo when your other piece arrives and the shop will confirm the match. If the sizes are similar, replacing all the covers keeps everything the same.
- A common question
Can I buy one backrest to replace the piece my dog chewed, or to add to my sofa?
The workshop's answerSingle armrests are not sold on their own, but individual backrests with filling are, straight or L-shaped, in colors such as brick or off-white. The shop sends a private purchase link.

Send the numbers in inches: length × depth × thickness, plus any angle. The workshop checks them with you, because foam has no undo button. — Nate

Questions buyers ask next
Why did my bay cushion come back with pointed ends?
Usually because the straight end pieces were left out of the measurements. Without them the angled side runs all the way to the corner and finishes in a point. Measure the short square section at each end and list it separately.
How do I choose pink for a window seat without it looking childish?
Pick a grayed rose rather than a clear pink, and repeat it in one or two small things already in the room, such as flowers, a print or a faded rug. The repetition makes the color look chosen rather than added.
Which fabric codes belong in a bay cushion order?
The code of the body fabric and, if you want contrast, the code of the piping, both from the shop's charts. Here the body is textured boucle 717 with self piping, so one code is enough. Put it in the same message as your drawing.
