A cobalt and cream floor sofa, and a buyer who split the back in two

One strong color on a neutral piece is enough. A buyer in the US took the same idea further and split it five ways.

The quick answer

For a floor sofa about 41 x 83 in (104 x 211 cm), two 16 x 41.5 in (41 x 105 cm) backrests are easier to handle than one 16 x 83 in back, and each half can take its own color. In this white room, cobalt ends on cream velvet carry the color, so one ficus and a jute rug are enough.

Two colors, one outline

Cobalt is one of the most saturated colors in the range. On white walls and a pale floor it reads like a line drawn around the sofa.

The seat and back are cream velvet. The ends are cobalt. So are the caps of the bolster in the middle of the seat, which repeats the blue where the eye rests. There is no piping. The color change is the edge.

A high window lets daylight fall on the seat from above. Velvet pile shows lighter and darker shading from different angles, and light from overhead keeps glare off the seat.

The styling is one ficus in a white ceramic pot and a plain jute rug. One plant is enough when the sofa carries the color. Which one color would you let carry yours? The jute keeps the blue from feeling cold in a white living room.

A modular floor sofa sits low. Height is a feeling, and the empty white wall above this one makes the room feel taller than it is.

One color. One plant. A lot of white wall.

A real project

Forty-one by eighty-three, in five colors

A buyer in the US wanted a floor sofa about 41 x 83 in (104 x 211 cm) and asked one question first: how tall should the back be?

The workshop proposed a 41 x 83 in seat, two bolsters, and a choice for the back. One backrest 16 x 83 in (41 x 211 cm), or two backrests 16 x 41.5 in (41 x 105 cm).

The buyer chose two. Then chose a different color for every piece, all in the same soft fabric. A tobacco seat. Indigo and lavender backs. Emerald and yellow bolsters.

The photograph above uses two colors. The buyer used five. The rule underneath is the same: split the long piece, and each part can speak. The floor sofa layouts Pattern shows where halves go.

Sizes

The lesson: Splitting a long backrest into two halves makes it easier to handle and lets you play with color.

One saturated accent on a neutral floor sofa is enough: cobalt velvet ends on cream, one ficus, one jute rug, and nothing else in the room competes.

What floor-sofa buyers asked next

  1. A common question

If a custom cushion doesn't fit my space, can I send it back?

    The workshop's answer

Made-to-measure pieces are generally not refunded. Instead, the workshop offers to make a new one at cost. You can return the original, but the return shipping is yours. Damaged parts are different: send photos and ask the workshop to confirm the fix in writing.

  2. A common question

The floor sofa listing says sold out. When is it back?

    The workshop's answer

When orders run high, the listing sometimes pauses briefly while stock is renewed. The workshop can still take the order through a custom order link, and the listing goes live again soon after.

  3. A common question

Can the modular ottomans be sized for a small room?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, existing pieces can be resized. For a 72 in (183 cm) wall the plan was one full-size 35 1/2 x 35 1/2 in (90 x 90 cm) ottoman plus a second cut to the exact remaining width. A straight backrest instead of an L-shaped one frees the sides. Hard tabletops and new designs, such as a skinny armrest, aren't made.

Questions buyers ask next

How tall should a floor sofa backrest be?

About 16 in (41 cm), measured from the top of the seat. That is the height the workshop proposed for this 41 x 83 in seat, and it recommends it over a lower 12 in (30 cm) back for proper support.

Can the seat, backs and bolsters of a floor sofa differ in color?

Yes. In one US order the seat was tobacco, the two backs indigo and lavender, and the two bolsters emerald and yellow, all in one soft fabric. Mixing colors piece by piece is a normal request.

Does velvet suit a floor sofa in a bright room?

Indoors, yes. The short pile shows lighter and darker shading from different angles, so light from a high window is kinder than low side light. Velvet is for indoor use and spot-cleans easily.

Why skip piping on a two-color sofa?

When the ends differ in color from the body, the color change already draws the edge, and piping would add a second line. Piping is included when you want it, and no piping costs the same.
