A cobalt and cream modular floor sofa in a white room, season by season

Cobalt at the ends, cream where you sit, white everywhere else. The room stays still. The light moves around it all year.

The quick answer

A cobalt and cream velvet modular floor sofa in a white room needs no seasonal redecorating: only the light, the washing and the guest calendar change through the year. Every cover unzips and machine washes at 86°F (30°C) at most, the two seat mattresses lie flat as a guest bed, and a custom velvet order takes longer than the standard corduroy.

Seattle ·

To you, in a white room,

A white room is a calendar

A white room shows the year better than any other. The walls do not change. The light on them does.

This modular floor sofa is cream velvet where you sit and cobalt velvet at the ends. Box edges. No piping. On a sofa made of blocks, the two colors already draw the lines, so a welt would only add a third.

It sits on the wall away from the tall window. That leaves a clear path to the light, and the window keeps its whole height. A small framed print hangs low, in scale with a seat that is only about 14 in (36 cm) off the floor.

The props are few, and each has a job. One corner shelf with a ceramic jug adds warmth without clutter. A plant in a terracotta pot is the only warm color in the room, and it balances the cool blue. Books and a small vase on the sill say someone reads here.

The white shaggy rug marks where the lounging happens. It also helps on a pale floor: with the non-slip fabric under the seat bases, a rug keeps the pieces from drifting.

In a rented white room, a colored floor sofa furnishes the space without a can of paint. The short-pile velvet does the work that paint would. More low seating for this kind of room lives under living room cushions. What color are your walls in February?

The walls stay white. The light keeps moving. The blue holds its place.

Pinned by Hana: five marks in a pale room

Five marks, from the low frame on the wall to the rug in front of the seat.

  1. Framed print

A small frame hung low keeps the wall in scale with the low sofa.

  2. Corner shelf and jug

One small shelf adds warmth without adding clutter.

  3. Terracotta potted plant

Terracotta is the only warm tone and balances the cool cobalt.

  4. Cobalt base end

The blue ends read crisply from across a pale room.

  5. White shaggy rug

A soft rug in front marks out the lounging area.

The same sofa, four settings a year

  1. Winter: gray light, guests

The sun stays low. White walls turn slightly blue, and the cobalt ends read deeper against them. The shaggy rug earns its place on a cold floor. When guests come, the two seat mattresses lie flat as a bed of about 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm); the floor sofa bed Pattern covers sheets and firmness.

  2. Spring: wash day

Every cover unzips. Turn them inside out and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) at most, gentle cycle, mild detergent, no bleach. Air dry. This velvet is indoor-only and not water-resistant, so close the tall window when spring rain comes sideways. The washing Pattern has the details.

  3. Summer: long light

The window does most of the work now. The sofa already sits on the far wall, out of the strongest light. Keep it there. Move the modules around now and then so no single piece takes every afternoon. Velvet pile shows lighter and darker shading from different angles. Bright light makes it easy to see. It is the pile, not wear.

  4. Fall: the ordering season

If you want a spare cover set in a warmer color for winter, order it now. A velvet color outside the standard corduroy takes longer to source. Floor pillows, a bolster pillow or a custom size cushion for the sill can come and go with the seasons. The sofa stays.

A real project

The guests who arrived before the velvet

A buyer in the US ordered this modular floor sofa in cream velvet instead of the standard corduroy. The hope was simple. It would be there before the guests.

It was not. Sourcing the fabric took time, and a run of public holidays added more. The workshop offered a way out: ship the corduroy version at once, and send velvet covers later for an added cost. The buyer chose to wait for the velvet.

It came with a partial refund for the delay. One L-shaped backrest arrived lumpy, its cover loose on one arm, and a replacement backrest was sent.

A custom fabric swap adds time. Guests come on a fixed date. Do not let the two meet.

The lesson: Custom fabric swaps add sourcing time; don't plan a custom sofa around a fixed guest date.

Buyer questions: covers, returns and swatches

  1. A common question

Do the floor sofa covers zip off, and can they go in the washing machine?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover unzips and comes off, and all of them can be machine washed at 86°F (30°C).

  2. A common question

If I change my mind about the sofa, or just one piece of it, how do returns work?

    The workshop's answer

The buyer ships the item back to the workshop at their own cost, and the refund is paid once it arrives undamaged. The shop does not sell return labels. Because return shipping can cost more than the piece itself, the shop has often suggested alternatives: a partial refund while you keep the piece, a discount on other pieces, or switching the order to a different piece.

  3. A common question

Can I see swatches of the floor sofa colors before I order?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Order the fabric sample option on the floor cushion listing, and write in the order note that the samples are for the floor sofa and which colors you want. One sample order covers three colors, and the workshop can send real-life photos of any color while you wait.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a modular floor sofa work as a guest bed in winter?

Yes. The two seat mattresses lie flat as a bed of about 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm), and each one is close to a US twin XL. Keep a rug underneath: with the non-slip bases, it helps stop the pieces drifting apart overnight.

Why does cobalt velvet look lighter from one side of the room?

The velvet has a short directional pile, so it shows lighter and darker shading from different angles. Low winter sun and bright summer light make the effect easier to see. It is how the pile catches light, not a flaw and not wear.

Can a velvet floor sofa move out to a screened porch for summer?

No. This velvet is made for indoor use only and is not water-resistant, though it spot-cleans easily. Porch seating needs an outdoor fabric; keep the velvet sofa in the living room, away from open windows in rain.

Can I recolor a floor sofa for a new season without buying a new one?

Yes. Spare cover sets, two seat covers and two L-shaped backrest covers without foam or bars, are sold separately in standard sizes. A room can go from cobalt to a warmer color by changing the covers alone.

P.S. Look at your swatches in the light of the month you will sit most. A cobalt chosen by a bright June window can look different by a gray February one.
