A cobalt and cream velvet modular floor sofa in a city apartment, and the handwork you can't see

A low sofa, a blue rug, a window unit left in the frame. Most of the craft here is invisible. This is where to look.

The quick answer

A modular floor sofa is finished by hand in ways you mostly can't see: the foam is cut slightly larger than its cover so the cover looks full, non-slip fabric is sewn under the seat bases, and every cover unzips. The standard set is 39 x 79 in (99 x 200 cm) with a seat about 14 in (36 cm) high, and it can be shortened.

Low, blue and planned

The sofa sits low. The coffee table sits low. Everything here lives within about 14 in (36 cm) of the floor, and the room feels larger for it. Height is a feeling.

The color is a quiet plan. Cream velvet for the seats, cobalt for the ends. The cobalt appears twice more: in the blue-and-cream rug beneath, and in the abstract print on the wall. A bold color repeated three times reads as intention.

A low sofa leaves the corners empty. Plants fill them at three heights: a fiddle-leaf fig on the floor, a rubber plant on a bentwood stool, small pots on the sill. The window air conditioner stays in the picture. It is a real apartment.

The edges are boxed, with no piping. On velvet, a plain seam lets the pile carry the light. More low rooms live in small-apartment floor sofa layouts. Would you sit this low every day?

Five places where the room was decided.

Pinned: Cream and cobalt blue velvet floor sofa in a city apartment with a fiddle-leaf fig, blue-and-cream rug and oak coffee table
  1. Abstract framed print

The artwork repeats the cobalt, so the bold sofa looks planned.

  2. Fiddle-leaf fig

A tall plant fills the corner that a low sofa leaves empty.

  3. Cobalt base end

The end color links to the blue in the rug beneath it.

  4. Blue traditional rug

Choosing a rug with the accent color already in it ties the room together.

  5. Low coffee table

A low mid-century table matches the floor sofa's seat height.

Where the hands matter

  1. The foam is cut slightly larger than its cover, so the cover looks full. Fitting it takes two people.
  2. Non-slip fabric is sewn under the seat bases and the ottoman, so the pieces stay where you put them.
  3. Every cover closes with a hidden zipper and comes off to wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.
  4. Four metal bars sit under and behind the backrests. They twist and click together with small spring dots, no screws.
  5. Before cutting, the workshop checks each fabric code, size and unit, and holds the order if anything is unclear.
A real project

Eleven inches shorter, backrests to match

A buyer in the US wanted this kind of floor sofa in a light green velvet instead of corduroy, with rounded pillows, a wood base and tufting. The workshop offered a water-green velvet and said plainly what it could not do on this model: no wood base, no tufting, no rounded edges.

The buyer chose the velvet, a poly-cotton blend. Then the room decided the size. The standard 39 x 79 in (99 x 200 cm) became 39 x 68 in (99 x 173 cm), and the backrests were scaled down to match. Shorten the seat without the backs, and the pillows overwhelm it. Every size lives under modular floor sofas.

Shorter seat. Shorter backs. The same calm.

Sizes
39 x 68 in (99 x 173 cm); standard 39 x 79 in (99 x 200 cm)

The lesson: Shortening a floor sofa also means scaling the backrests, or the pillows overwhelm the seat.

Sizes, set prices and what one click buys

  1. A common question

How is a full floor sofa set priced when I need a custom size?

    The workshop's answer

By size. Sets have been quoted from 24 x 56 in (60 x 140 cm) through 38 x 75 in, a 4 x 8 ft set and a 9 ft set, up to a 14 ft window nook 36 in deep made in several pieces. Send your size and ask for one price that spells out shipping.

  2. A common question

Could you make the floor sofa smaller for a small apartment or a guest room?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, width and depth can both change: 64 x 32 in closed, 68 x 39 in, under 65 in wide, or 33 in deep instead of the standard 39 in. Buy the standard-size listing and leave your size in the note. The customization fee was waived, but a smaller size costs the same as the standard.

  3. A common question

What do I actually get for the starting price on the modular floor sofa listing?

    The workshop's answer

One backrest. Each module (sofa base, ottoman, L-shaped backrest, straight backrest) and each full set has its own price in the preferences drop-down. If you order only a backrest, the workshop messages you to check you didn't mean the whole sofa, and cancels it if it was a mistake.

Shorten a floor sofa from 79 in to 68 in and the backrests must shrink with it, or the back pillows overwhelm the seat.

Questions buyers ask next

How high does a modular floor sofa sit?

The seat is about 13.5 to 14.5 in (34 to 37 cm) high. Each seat mattress is about 6.5 in (17 cm) thick, and that layer can't be changed. A low table at the same height makes the room read as one floor-level zone; see the floor sofa buying guide.

Does a modular floor sofa need a wall behind it?

No. Four metal bars sit under and behind the backrests, stop them sliding back and make the sofa freestanding. Non-slip fabric under the seat bases keeps the pieces from creeping. Assembly is covered in support bars.

Why does a new floor sofa look flat when it arrives?

It travels vacuum-compressed in roll packs. Unpack it promptly and give the foam time to recover. If a piece is still flat after about a week, send the workshop photos from a few angles; in past cases replacement foam was shipped. See the first 72 hours.
