A Reading by HanaKids' Floor Sofas & Play Couches

A chocolate jumbo-cord kids floor sofa, and why it has no piping

Hana reads a dark corduroy play couch at toddler height and asks what a piping cord would have added. Nothing it needs.

The quick answer

A jumbo-cord kids floor sofa usually looks best without piping, because the wide wales already draw strong parallel lines across every block. A cord around the edge would add a third line and harden a shape meant to feel soft. Here chocolate corduroy stays unpiped, and a yellow daisy and a blue star pillow carry the play.

Pinned by Hana, at toddler height

Five pins, read from the floor up: the toys, the seat blocks, the wedge back and the two pale pillows.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Wide wales plus piping: one line too many on a kids sofa

The camera sits low. Blocks and a wooden car in the foreground put your eye where a toddler's eye would be. From there each chocolate seat block looks thick and plush, the wide wales running like the ribs of an old lounge chair. Children measure comfort with their whole body, and this sofa is built for that.

There is no piping. That was the right call. Jumbo cord already draws its own lines, dozens of them, across every face. The box seams add a second set where the faces meet. A cord along those seams would add a third, and the block would start to look outlined, like a drawing of a sofa rather than a sofa.

The wedge backrest is as thick as each seat block. So it holds its shape, and the silhouette reads as one low, even mass.

Color does the rest. Chocolate is a forgiving base for small hands and daily marks. The butter yellow daisy and the powder blue star hold all the playfulness. Take them away, and the sofa could move to a den tomorrow. The plush bunnies on the white ledge and the picture books in the cube shelf stay pale for the same reason.

Dark floor sofas need a pale floor. The gray grid rug keeps the brown shape from sinking into the corner. Soft side light through the sheers does the same from above.

What does your child do on a sofa: sit, climb or build? Sizes for each age live among our kids floor sofas, and the wale story continues in corduroy.

No cord on the seams. Play on the pillows. A sofa that can grow up.

A real project

Two sofas, one corner, a straight bolster at the join

A buyer in the US had two off-white floor sofas and wanted them joined into an L-shaped sectional. At the join, the L-shaped arm pillow no longer made sense. She needed a straight cylinder backrest instead.

She measured 38 1/2 in (98 cm). The workshop suggested about 39 1/2 in (100 cm), in matching off-white, sized to the seat length. The pieces arrived in 6 vacuum packs. After 36 to 48 hours, everything had fully expanded.

When modular pieces become an L, the inner arm becomes a straight bolster. The modular floor sofa layouts show where each piece goes. For the piping question on other fabrics, see matching, contrast or no piping.

The lesson: When joining modular pieces into an L, replace the inner arm with a straight bolster sized to the seat length.

Buyer questions: bars, corners and two colors

  1. A common question

Does the floor sofa come with its metal bars, and can I buy just the bars or just the top cushions?

    The workshop's answer

It comes with 4 metal bars. The sofa is sold only as a complete set, so neither the bars nor the top cushions are sold on their own.

  2. A common question

Could the corner floor cushion be larger and thicker than the standard one?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The default is 4 in (10 cm) thick. One buyer asked for 46 in (117 cm) sides, and that size was offered at both 5 in (13 cm) and 6 in (15 cm) thick.

  3. A common question

Can different parts of one sofa come in different colors of the same fabric?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Write in the Personalization section which part gets which color, for example the couch in one color and the ottoman in another.

A jumbo-cord kids floor sofa needs no piping: the wide wales already draw dozens of lines, and a cord on every seam would outline it like a drawing.

Questions buyers ask next

Is chocolate a practical color for a kids floor sofa?

It is a forgiving one. A deep base hides everyday marks better than a pale one, while bright pillows keep the corner cheerful. When the child grows, the pillows change and the sofa can stay.

When is contrast piping worth it on a floor cushion?

When the fabric is plain and flat and you want each block to read crisp. On wide-wale corduroy the ribs already draw lines, so a contrast cord tends to crowd the shape instead of sharpening it.

What rug works under a dark floor sofa?

A pale one. A light rug, like the gray grid here, keeps a chocolate sofa from disappearing into a dim corner and gives the low shape an edge to sit against.

Can a play couch move to a living room later?

Yes, if the base color is grown-up. Keep the sofa in a deep, plain tone and put the playful shapes on the pillows. Swap the daisy and star for plain linen and the same sofa reads as den seating.
