A letter about a caramel bay window cushion and the years ahead of it

Partner, you asked how this caramel bay cushion will hold up to kids, a dog and afternoon sun. Here is my honest forecast, written the long way.

Caramel bouclé trapezoid bay window cushion with cocoa piping on a cream built-in seat beneath three arched windowsSave
A caramel pad cut to an angled bay, with cocoa piping that traces every edge of the shape.

The quick answer

A caramel bouclé bay window cushion ages well in family use because the color is mid-tone, the piping is darker than the body and the cushion never has to come off for storage. Expect the sun to reach the window face first and loops that can catch on claws. Order it cut to the bay's exact angle so it sits tight and doesn't shift.

Detroit ·

Dear partner,

What the photo tells me about wear

Three arches, café curtains, a cream built-in seat on terracotta tile, and a caramel bouclé pad cut to the bay. The left end follows the bay's angle, so the pad sits tight to the wall. A cushion that fits that closely doesn't creep, and a cushion that doesn't creep keeps its corners.

The cocoa piping traces the whole trapezoid. On an odd shape, that dark welt is what makes the geometry read as deliberate. It also does quiet work in a family house: the front edge is where hands grab and sneakers scuff, and cocoa hides that far better than a cream welt would.

Caramel bouclé, terracotta tile and a sun-faded runner are one warm family. That matters for the years ahead. A mid-tone color like caramel shows a slow shift under late sun less than a pale seat would. The olive branches in the cream jug are the only green, and the terracotta cup on the seat repeats the floor.

Now look under the pad. Two drawers. Storage you open from the front means the cushion never has to come off to get the board games out, and every lift you skip is wear you don't pay for. The pad is deep but doesn't tower over the base, so the seat stays at a height a kid can climb onto. Who uses your window seat hardest, the kids or the dog?

The shape family is bay window cushions, the cloth is in bouclé and teddy, and quieter corners are in reading nook cushions.

Pinned by Nate: five points under the arches

Five pins, from the angled cushion end to the drawers that keep the pad in place.

  1. Angled cushion end

The left end is cut on the bay's angle, so the pad sits tight to the wall.

  2. Cocoa piping line

A darker welt traces the trapezoid, making the custom shape read as deliberate.

  3. Book and terracotta cup

The terracotta cup repeats the floor tiles on the seat.

  4. Olive jug on sill

Olive branches are the only green in an all-warm scene.

  5. Storage drawers

Drawers below mean the cushion never has to come off to reach storage.

How a caramel bouclé bay cushion will wear, line by line

  • Sun: the face toward the glass takes the light first, and a mid-tone caramel hides the change longer than a pale seat.
  • Hands and shoes: the cocoa welt takes the scuffs along the front edge.
  • Pets: bouclé loops can catch on claws, so keep a throw where the dog likes to sleep.
  • Spills: blot first and don't scrub the loops flat.
  • Moving: the angled cut and the drawers below mean the pad rarely leaves the seat.
A real project

95 in on the order, 92 1/2 in on arrival

One buyer wrote in about a wide bay window seat. The shop needed more than the front, depth and thickness: it needed the back edge and both angled ends, so it sent a template with every edge lettered.

The first reply mixed up two edges. The corrected set was consistent: front 95 in (241 cm), back 47 1/2 in (120.5 cm), angled ends 34 in (86 cm) each, depth 24 in (61 cm), 3 in (7.5 cm) thick. Check it yourself: half the difference between front and back is 23 3/4 in, and with 24 in of depth that gives ends of about 33 3/4 in. Close enough to 34 in to cut. Tolerance is kindness to your future self.

Then the cushion arrived and measured 92 1/2 in, not 95. It had traveled vacuum-packed, and after 48 hours of foam recovery it was back to full size. No remake.

Give a vacuum-packed cushion 48 to 72 hours before you judge it; length can come back by inches. See the first 72 hours of a vacuum-packed cushion, and run angles through the bay window calculator.

Buyer questions: a green by name, a carrier and two units

  1. A common question

Which green is the bench cushion in your main photo, the mint or the emerald?

    The workshop's answer

Neither one. The color in the main picture is the one named khaki, so choose that.

  2. A common question

Which carrier brings the cushion, and how long does the whole thing take?

    The workshop's answer

An express courier service on that order. Production took 7 to 9 days, and delivery 3 to 5 days after dispatch.

  3. A common question

    The listing says 35½ x 19¾ in (90 x 50 cm) and also 36 x 20 in, but those aren't the same. Which size will I get?

    The workshop's answer

The centimeter size, about 19 3/4 x 35 3/8 in (50 x 90 cm), once you order. If the exact inch size matters to you, write it in the order notes.

Measure a vacuum-packed bay window cushion after 48 to 72 hours, not on arrival: one 95 in cushion measured 92 1/2 in out of the box and recovered fully.

Questions buyers ask next

Is bouclé sensible for a bay window seat in a family home?

It can be, in a mid-tone. Caramel shows marks and sun change less than a pale color, and a darker piping protects the look of the edges. Loops can catch on claws, so pet owners should plan a throw for the dog's favorite spot.

Why cut a bay cushion to the exact angle instead of using a rectangle?

A cushion cut to the bay's angle sits tight to the wall at both ends, so it doesn't slide or leave gaps. A rectangle in a bay leaves triangles of bare board at the ends and shifts every time someone sits down.

Which edges do I measure on a trapezoid bay seat?

The front, the back edge along the windows, both angled ends, the depth and the thickness you want. Label them on a drawing. One bay measured 95 in front, 47 1/2 in back, 34 in ends and 24 in deep.
