Brown piping is the middle tone between deep green and pale oak.

  3. Eucalyptus in stone

Dusty leaves in a rough vase repeat both the green and the earthy texture.

A bottle green daybed cushion, and the height it keeps

Green linen-look, a brown welt, an oak drawer base. The seat line stops exactly where the drawers begin. That is the proportion to copy.

The quick answer

A daybed cushion should be sized from your mattress, with its thickness chosen for the height you want to sit at. Give length, width and thickness, plus the sill height if back pillows sit under a window. One adult sleeping on a floor bed was advised about 60 in (152 cm) wide and 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm) thick.

Pinned by Hana: where green, brown and oak meet

The seat line stops where the drawers begin

The first thing here is a line. The top of the oak drawers, the seat edge, the welt. One above the other. The cushion does not overhang, and the drawers sit flush beneath it.

That is proportion. A daybed cushion is a band of height laid on a frame. Too thin and the frame shows. Too thick and the seat climbs past where feet rest easily. Height is a feeling, and you notice it first in your knees. The seat height calculator turns the feeling into numbers.

Bottle green is dark enough to look rich against pale oak. The brown welt is the middle tone. It circles the bolster end and runs the seat edge, matching the oak's darker grain.

Dried eucalyptus in a rough stone vase repeats the green, dustier, and the stone echoes the texture of the linen-look weave. A cream linen throw folded over the open end is a pale patch, so the green does not take the whole frame. The sheer curtain softens the light. The herringbone floor carries the wood down.

A line of green. A line of brown. A line of oak.

A real project

Two twin XL daybeds that wanted to be sofas

A parent in the US wrote about two twin XL daybeds, each under a window in a child's room. She wanted them to read as sofas, places to sit with a book. The mattresses measured 38 x 80 x 10 in (97 x 203 x 25 cm), and she asked for extra-tall back pillows, about 26 in (66 cm), running the full length.

She liked linens 2, 3 and 6 and asked for larger photos. The workshop confirmed it could also sew fabric she shipped in.

How far is your sill above the mattress? Send that number with the mattress size, and the back pillows can be cut to fill the gap.

Sizes
Mattress 38 x 80 x 10 in; back pillows about 26 in high
Fabric
Linen 2, 3 or 6, or the buyer's own

The lesson: Give the mattress size and the sill height so back pillows fill the gap.

Buyer questions: sizes, beds and sliding

  1. A common question

Will a daybed cover set fit a standard twin mattress, or does it have to be a custom size?

    The workshop's answer

Every set is made to your measurements, written in the personalization section, for example 39 x 75 x 5 in (99 x 191 x 13 cm). Two stacked mattresses simply get one cover at their measured total height.

  2. A common question

Could I sleep on a floor cushion as my bed, and how wide should it be?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For one adult of about 5 ft 2 in (157 cm), the workshop suggested around 60 in (152 cm) wide, and 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm) thick to sit higher off the floor. The filling is comfortable for sleeping.

  3. A common question

Will the cushion have a non-slip bottom? My daybed top is smooth.

    The workshop's answer

Not as standard, but a non-slip bottom can be added for an extra cost. Anti-slip bases have also gone on outdoor seat cushions and been offered on banquettes to stop sliding.

For a deep green daybed cushion on pale oak, choose piping in the wood's darker grain tone: a brown welt sits halfway between the two.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a daybed cushion be on a frame with drawers?

Thick enough for the sitting height you want, and no more. Here the seat ends flush with the drawer base, with no overhang, so the drawers read as part of the seat.

What piping color suits a dark green cushion on light wood?

A tone between the two. Here a brown welt picks up the oak's darker grain and sits halfway between bottle green and pale oak, so cushion and frame read as one piece.

Can daybed cushions be made in fabric I send?

Yes. For two twin XL daybeds the workshop confirmed it could sew the buyer's own fabric if it was shipped in. Send it with the mattress size and the back-pillow height you want.
