A Reading by CallumOutdoor & Water-Repellent Cushions

An aqua outdoor cushion on a teak lounger, and how to mix a stripe with a plain

Callum reads a sea-view terrace and the sets hung beside it: one pattern, one plain, and the wood grain doing the texture.

The quick answer

To mix patterns on outdoor cushions, give the stripe to one piece and the plain to the other, both from the same color family, and let natural textures like teak grain do the rest. On a lounge chair, a plain seat under a striped back reads calm, and piping taken from the plain keeps the edges quiet.

The plate: aqua, teak and a line of sea

Borrow one color from the view. That is the whole trick on this terrace, and it took me thirty years of boat cushions to say it that simply.

The aqua seat and loose back sit in a deep teak lounger with a whitewashed wall behind and the sea on the horizon. The seat fills the frame edge to edge, corners sharp and full, which tells you the foam was cut to the frame's exact depth. The boxed side is thick, and that thickness is what turns a low teak lounger into somewhere you can stay an hour. The back leans loose against the frame and adds the depth you need to lounge.

The piping is aqua on aqua. Against a bright sky a white welt would flicker; a tonal one keeps the edge crisp and calm. The honey teak arm supplies the texture, grain against weave, warm against cool.

This chair is all plain, which makes it the right place to start a mix. The outdoor cushions beside it on this page show where pattern goes:

  • One piece striped, one plain: a slate seat under a sky-stripe back, or a coral stripe seat under plain coral backs.
  • Keep both in one color family, so the stripe reads as a variation, not a second idea.
  • Take the piping from the plain, not the stripe.
  • Let wood, rope or wicker bring the texture instead of a third fabric.

For salt air and spray, the cloth here is a water-repellent membrane fabric. More sets live in outdoor cushions and patio and porch cushions. Which piece on your porch should carry the stripe, friend?

Pinned by Callum: five marks between the arm and the horizon

Five pins, from the full box corner to the sea the fabric borrows its color from.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Terrace chips: one color borrowed from the view

  • Terrace aqua#5FB8B5The cushion and its piping in one shade, so the edge stays calm.
  • Duck-egg blue#A9CFCBThe lighter cast where sun hits the top; a second tone a stripe could use.
  • Honey teak#B07A43The warm arm, texture without a third fabric.
  • Whitewash#F3F1EAThe wall that makes aqua look cooler and cleaner.
  • Horizon blue#3F7FA6The sea the cushion echoes, and a good stripe partner for aqua.
A real project

A black 2 in pad that got a twin

A buyer in the US asked whether outdoor cushions only came 4 in thick. They don't: 2, 3, 4 and 5 in are all made. She wanted black, and asked whether every black outdoor fabric was the same quality. The shop confirmed it is, so she chose on looks alone.

She added a non-slip backing and ordered one outdoor bench cushion, 16 x 74 x 2 in (41 x 188 x 5 cm). When it arrived, she ordered an identical second one for her other bench.

That second order is the best review a cushion can get. A thin 2 in pad with a grippy base stays where you put it and doesn't turn a bench into a tall seat. Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything. Read stop a bench cushion sliding for the options, and the outdoor fabric comparison before you pick a cloth.

Buyer questions: white fabric, a camper bunk and a short piece

  1. A common question

Which white outdoor fabrics can take bleach for stubborn stains?

    The workshop's answer

All the white and off-white outdoor fabrics can be cleaned, and for bleach cleaning the ideal ones are V-45/V-54, M-01 and S-09.

  2. A common question

Can you make cushions for the top bunk in an RV camper?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Two velvet cushions of 71 x 28 in (180 x 71 cm) at the pictured 12 in (30 cm) thickness were quoted singly and as a pair. On the velvet chart, #4 is a dark beige and #13 a beige.

  3. A common question

One of my cushions came shorter than I meant it to be. Will you remake it?

    The workshop's answer

The shop first checks it against the drawing you approved before production. In one case the approved dimensions were 23 in (58 cm) shorter on one piece than the buyer intended, and the shop offered to make the right length if the buyer covered the production cost of the new piece.

Mix outdoor cushions with one striped piece and one plain piece in the same color family, and take the piping from the plain.

Questions buyers ask next

Should outdoor piping match the stripe or the plain fabric?

Match the plain. Piping cut from the plain fabric frames the cushion without adding another line to a striped piece, and a tonal welt keeps the edge crisp against a bright sky or a white wall.

How do I pick an outdoor cushion color for a sea view?

Borrow one color from the view, such as the water, and keep the piping in the same shade. Against white walls and warm teak, a single borrowed color links the chair to the horizon without competing with it.

Why do deep teak loungers usually get a loose back cushion?

A deep lounger is built for leaning back, and its seat is often too deep to sit in comfortably on its own. A loose back cushion fills that depth, so you can lounge instead of perching on the front edge.
