An antique pink velvet custom bench cushion that doubles as a flower table

A letter from the bench, written for anyone who has stroked a velvet swatch and wondered how it will look after a year of real use.

An antique pink velvet bench cushion makes a soft surface for arranging garden flowers by the window.

The quick answer

A velvet custom bench cushion feels soft and warm, shows color deeply, and shows marks: pile pressed by a hand, a scratch from a tool, a ring of water. Put a cloth or tray down before anything wet or sharp touches it, and choose firm, flat foam if the bench doubles as a surface, as this antique pink one does.

High Point ·

My friend,

A letter about the pink velvet on the oak bench

I have been looking at a photograph of somebody's morning. A pale oak bench under a garden window, an antique pink velvet cushion on top, and on it a ribbed cream jug of white cosmos, blue cornflowers and wheat. Two hands are mid-arrangement. Loose stems lie on the velvet, and black iron flower scissors rest on a folded linen napkin.

That is a bench being used, not shown. The jug stands upright on the seat, so the cushion is firm and flat enough to work on. The antique pink sits soft behind white and blue flowers, and the honey oak keeps it from turning sweet. The piping is cut from the same pink, so the front edge stays quiet beside the cut stems.

Velvet remembers. It remembers the hand that brushed it and the jug that stood too long, and a person who knows that gets along with it fine.

Five pins on a working bench

Five pins, from the jug on the seat to the scissors resting on linen.

  1. Ribbed cream jug

A tall jug on the seat shows the cushion top is firm enough to hold it upright.

  2. Hands arranging flowers

Hands in the frame make this a moment of use, not a showroom.

  3. Scissors on linen

Laying tools on a napkin protects the velvet pile from marks.

  4. Wicker basket

The basket trails out of shot, suggesting the bench goes on beyond the frame.

  5. Self-piped front edge

Antique pink piping keeps the edge soft beside all the cut flowers.

How this velvet feels, wears and cleans

How it feels. Velvet is a pile fabric: short fibers stand up from the weave, so the hand is soft and warm and the color sits deeper than on a flat cloth. Run your palm one way and the pink lightens; run it back and it darkens. That is the nap at work.

How it wears. Pile shows use. Where people sit, or where a jug stands for an hour, it presses flat and catches the light differently; a flat hand or a soft brush coaxes light marks back. Velvet also shows every scratch and water mark, which makes the napkin under the scissors the smartest prop in the picture.

How it cleans. Prevention first: a cloth or tray under anything wet or sharp. When a cover needs more, follow the Pattern on velvet bench cushion care. The basket trailing out of frame says this bench runs on past the picture. What will your bench do besides seat people?

A real project

One cushion, 132 5/8 inches long

A buyer messaged the workshop about a long window bench and wanted one cushion, not sections: 132 5/8 x 22 x 2 in (337 x 56 x 5 cm), with a non-slip base, a velvet body in P-66 and P-54 piping. The workshop walked them through it: choose the size range on the listing, then write the exact size and both codes in the personalization note.

A very long single bench can still be one custom order when every option is written down. The Patterns on the personalization note and one piece or two show how.

Three velvet bench questions

  1. A common question

What foam goes into a bench cushion with piping and a non-slip bottom?

    The workshop's answer

For 3 in (7.5 cm) foam bench cushions with single piping and an anti-slip bottom fabric, the workshop uses 28 DNS density foam, its best-quality grade. One navy pair measured 17.5 x 84 in (44 x 213 cm) and 17.5 x 71 in (44 x 180 cm).

  2. A common question

Should my long, shaped bench cushion be one piece or several sections?

    The workshop's answer

One piece is possible, but for a long bench with steps and curved front corners it is harder to make and may cost more, so the workshop asks your preference and suggests sections as the easier route. For a curved banquette, it reviews a one-piece template with its craftsmen before quoting.

  3. A common question

One of my cushions came 6 inches too short. What happens now?

    The workshop's answer

Measure it, photograph the tape along the short side and send that to the workshop. In one such case it remade the cushion at the correct size, 45.5 x 16.5 in (116 x 42 cm), and the buyer kept the short one.

Velvet on a bench shows every scratch and water ring, so a linen napkin under the scissors and a tray under the jug are part of owning velvet.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a velvet bench cushion hold a jug or vase on the seat?

It can if the cushion is firm and flat, as this one is, but set a tray or cloth underneath. Velvet shows water rings and scratches, and a heavy jug left for hours presses a patch that catches the light differently.

Can a velvet bench cushion have an anti-slip bottom?

Yes. An anti-slip bottom fabric can be added to foam bench cushions, and it works alongside single piping. Write both options into the order note so neither is missed when the cushion is cut.

Is antique pink velvet too sweet for a living room bench?

Not beside pale honey oak and white flowers. The wood and the white keep the pink grown-up. The same pink surrounded by more pink and ruffles is where it tips over into sugary.

Sit well. — Harlan
