An amber back cushion on a gray patio sofa, nearly as thick as the seat below it
Harlan writes a letter about proportion: how deep a back cushion should stand against the seat, and what one warm color does on a cool frame.
SaveThe quick answer
A patio back cushion should come close to the thickness of the seat cushion below it, because that proportion props the sitter upright the way the sofa was designed. Order a bench seat and back cushion as a pair, write firm on the order if you want firm foam, and re-cover faded backs in one warm solid to refresh a gray set.

My friend,
A letter about the back cushion
Folks spend weeks choosing the seat cushion for a patio sofa and about five minutes on the back. Then they wonder why they slide down and end up talking to the sky.
Look at this one. The amber back cushion is nearly as thick as the gray seat below it, and it stands upright against the frame instead of leaning like a tired pillow. That proportion is what props a sitter up the way the sofa was drawn. A back cushion much thinner than the seat leaves a gap behind the shoulders, and people fill that gap by slouching.
Buy the cushion once, cry once, my friend. If the frame came with a set, match its thickness when you replace the backs, and measure the seat depth before you decide how far a thick back may reach into it. The seat height calculator and back cushion sizing do the arithmetic for you.
Pinned by Harlan: amber back, piped edge, gray seat, pots and herbs
Five pins, from the amber back cushion down to the herbs blurred in the foreground.

- Amber back cushion
Almost as thick as the seat, it props the sitter upright like the original set.
- Self-piped top edge
Piping in the same yarn keeps a tidy outline without adding a second color.
- Gray seat cushion
The cool gray seat makes the single warm back cushion the focus.
- Terracotta pots
Clay pots in the background repeat the amber tone.
- Foreground herbs
Soft-focus leaves frame the sofa and add depth.

Reading the proportion from flagstone to top edge
Start at the ground. Flagstone paving, a light gray aluminum frame, a fitted gray seat cushion. Everything cool and level. Then one warm block stands up out of it.
The amber is the only warm color on the sofa, and it is not alone in the picture. Terracotta pots of lavender and herbs line the patio behind, and the clay picks up the amber so the cushion looks planted rather than dropped in. The herbs in the soft-focus foreground frame the sofa and give the photograph its depth.
The top edge is self-piped, the welt made from the same yarn as the body. It keeps a crisp outline against the greenery without bringing in a second color. On an outdoor acrylic cushion that edge matters, because the top is what the eye rests on from the back door.
Here is what I would copy. When only part of an outdoor set has faded, re-cover the backs in one bold solid and let the gray seats go quiet. It is the plainest honest refresh I know, and the patio set cushion refresh sketches show more of them. Which cushions on your patio gave up first, the seats or the backs?
Four back cushions, and the word firm
A buyer wrote in needing extra back cushions for a velvet sofa indoors. First came two at 19 3/4 x 27 1/2 in (50 x 70 cm), in velvet to match the sofa. Then two long ones at 35 3/8 x 11 3/4 in (90 x 30 cm), about 4 3/4 in (12 cm) thick, with one condition: they had to be firm.
The workshop confirmed firm foam filling and made them in a navy blue velvet. Nothing fancy happened, and that is the point. The buyer said the word, and the maker reached for the right foam.
A back that thick is a real back, not a throw pillow. Indoors or out, if you want a cushion to hold you up, say firm on the order. The foam firmness finder helps you pick the word before you write it, and more outdoor seating lives under patio and porch cushions.
Buyer questions: wall-hung backs, set pricing and cushions that stay put
- A common question
Can you make channel-tufted back cushions that hang on the wall above a banquette?
The workshop's answerYes, and the build depends on how they mount. For hook-and-loop tape, adhesive or loops on a rod, they are made as filled fabric cushions. For screwing or flush mounting, such as on a French cleat, they get a solid wood or MDF backing inside.
- A common question
If I order several large cushions together, or come back for more, is there a better price?
The workshop's answerOften, yes. Multi-piece sets such as a large L-shaped pair, or four seats with backrests, have been quoted below the sum of their listing prices, and returning buyers have been offered lower quotes on extra back cushions and second cover sets. Ask for the set price before you check out.
- A common question
Is there a non-slip underside so a cushion stops creeping on a bench?
The workshop's answerYes. A non-slip base is an add-on charged per cushion, and the underside is then finished with anti-slip material so the cushion stays put on a window seat or bench.

Questions buyers ask next
How thick should an outdoor back cushion be next to its seat cushion?
Close to the seat's own thickness works well. On this gray sofa the amber back is nearly as deep as the seat, so it props the sitter upright as the frame intended. When replacing backs from an original set, match the thickness the set came with.
Can I re-cover only the faded back cushions on a patio set?
Yes. Re-covering just the backs in a bold solid is an easy refresh when the seats still look good. A warm color on a gray frame becomes the focus, and repeating it once nearby, as terracotta pots do here, makes it look planned.
Why pipe an amber outdoor cushion in the same yarn as its body?
Same-yarn piping gives the cushion a crisp, tailored outline without adding a second color. On a single accent cushion that keeps attention on the color itself, and the edge still reads clearly from across the patio.
Sit well. — Harlan
