The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

How wide are the stripes on your striped fabrics?

Also asked as:Measurement of the stripes for N01 and N02?What's the thickness of the stripes?

A stripe's width decides whether a cushion whispers or speaks. Here are the numbers behind each code.

The quick answer

Stripe widths depend on the fabric code: N01 has a bolder 0.55 in (1.4 cm) stripe, N02 a finer 0.28 in (0.7 cm) stripe, and N30 and the codes after it carry wide stripes of roughly 2 to 2.4 in (5-6 cm). The red stripes share one color in different widths, and N14 is the darkest red.

Choosing a stripe, code by code

  • Want a crisp, bolder narrow stripe? N01, at 0.55 in (1.4 cm).
  • Want a finer line? N02, at 0.28 in (0.7 cm), exactly half the width of N01.
  • Want a wide, awning-style stripe? N30 and the codes after it, roughly 2 to 2.4 in (5-6 cm).
  • Want red? The red stripes are one color in several widths, so choose the width, not the shade.
  • Want the deepest red? N14 is the darkest.
  • Write the exact fabric code on the order, not just the word stripe.

How stripe width sets the tone of a cushion

A stripe is a rhythm, and its width sets the tempo. At 0.28 in (0.7 cm), N02 is a quiet line; N01 doubles it to 0.55 in (1.4 cm) and begins to speak. The wide stripes from N30 on, roughly 2 to 2.4 in (5-6 cm), run seven to eight times the width of N02, closer to a porch awning than a pinstripe.

The reds deserve their own note. They are one red cut in different widths, with only a very slight tone difference, so a bench cushion in one width and pillows in another should sit together happily. N14 is the deepest of them, the color of a ripe cherry in shade.

Every stripe appears in the charts and listing photos, and the striped cotton and ticking swatches gather them in one place. Width is half the story; the stripe direction Pattern tells the other half, and ordering swatches first lets you judge scale in your own light. For your cushion covers, which suits the room, my friends: the whisper or the awning?

Stripe width is set by the fabric code: N01 runs 0.55 in (1.4 cm), N02 a finer 0.28 in (0.7 cm), and N30 onward 2 to 2.4 in (5-6 cm).

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

How wide are the stripes on N01 and N02?

    The workshop's answer

    N01 has a bolder 0.55 in (1.4 cm) stripe and N02 a finer 0.28 in (0.7 cm) stripe.

  2. A common question

Do you carry striped fabrics, and how wide do the stripes get?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, the N series, shown in the charts and listing photos. N30 and the codes after it have wide stripes of roughly 2 to 2.4 in (5-6 cm). The red stripes are the same color in different widths with only a very slight tone difference, and N14 is the darkest red.

  3. A common question

Is a color name enough when I order, or do I need the code?

    The workshop's answer

Write the exact fabric code from the charts in the listing photos. Each color comes in several shades, and orders wait until a code is given. For a color you saw in a photo, describe it in the order notes.

Questions buyers ask next

Can I see a stripe in person before the cushion is made?

Yes. The fabric sample option sends small swatches of any fabric the workshop sells, so you can check a stripe's width and color at home first. Write the exact codes you want in the note box.

Does the linen-look fabric hold up on seat cushions?

Yes. It's a linen-polyester blend, so it holds its shape, wrinkles little and resists stains better than pure linen. It has no coating and washes at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle, then line dries.

Is there a bouclé or teddy option alongside the stripes?

Yes. Teddy fabric has its own color chart and is the nearest option to bouclé, and a bouclé collection exists on the trapezoid listing. Teddy is polyester and costs more than velvet or soft fabric.
