Custom cushion covers for a crowd: caramel bouclé and the side zipper

Every dinner party ends with the same question about the bench: does the cover come off? Élodie answers the common questions first, then reads the photograph.

The quick answer

Custom cushion covers with a zipper along the side panel come off without moving the bench, which matters most when you host. This caramel bouclé cover opens on the side, shows a pale inner layer over the foam and hides its small pull in the loops once closed. Wash it off the foam at up to 86°F (30°C), inside out, with mild detergent.

Buyer questions, before the reading: three questions hosts ask

  1. A common question

Can I order just the cover, without the foam inside?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Zippered covers alone, made to your measurements, are ordered through the custom cushion cover listing: enter your foam's length, depth and thickness and they fit snugly. They come off and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle, and cover-only replacements for cushions you already own are made too.

  2. A common question

The color I received looks different from the photos. What can I do?

    The workshop's answer

Colors can shift about 5 to 10 percent with daylight and screen settings, and fabric rolls can differ slightly in tone, which is why every order is photographed before it ships. Depending on the case, the workshop has sent a replacement cover in another color, offered a partial refund to keep the piece or a discount on a new one, or accepted a return with the buyer paying return shipping.

  3. A common question

Someone spilled soda on the cushion. How should I wash the cover?

    The workshop's answer

Zip the fabric off the cushion, turn it inside out and wash it at no more than 86°F (30°C) with a mild or extra-gentle detergent.

Now, the reading

A real project

A floor sofa that needed a second wardrobe

A buyer got in touch about a floor sofa from another brand. The cushions were fine; the covers were not. The base cushions measured 80 x 39 3/8 x 7 in (203 x 100 x 18 cm) and the L-shaped pieces 39 3/8 x 39 3/8 x 10 5/8 in (100 x 100 x 27 cm), and the buyer wondered whether the new covers should be cut bigger than the cushions.

The shop asked for a photo and offered filled backrests as well. The buyer kept to covers only, made in the custom sizes, with a slightly longer production time.

The answer to that question is the lesson: give the insert's exact dimensions and let the maker decide the ease. The notes on measuring foam you already own explain why.

Pinned by Élodie: four details in flat light

Four pins: the slim zipper pull, the pale inner layer, the level top seam and the oak edge the cushion meets.

  1. Small zipper pull

A slim pull sits in the side panel and disappears into the loops once closed.

  2. Pale inner layer

The opening shows a pale inner layer between the foam and the bouclé.

  3. Top seam line

The top seam stays level along the full length, a sign of an even foam fill.

  4. Oak bench top

The cushion sits flush with the bench edge, cut to its exact depth.

Caramel in flat light, and a zipper made for guests

This photograph is lit flat and soft on purpose. No raking sun, no drama: a caramel bouclé cushion on a light oak bench against a white wall, its side zipper half open. It answers a practical question before a pretty one.

The caramel is warm without tipping into orange, the color of toffee just before it sets, with a pale cream showing at the opening. On bouclé the loops scatter light, so the color reads softer and a touch lighter than it would on a flat weave. At a crowded table that softness is kind; small marks tend to settle into the texture instead of sitting on top of it.

The zipper runs along the side panel. Its slim pull disappears into the loops when closed, and through the opening you see a pale inner layer between foam and bouclé, so the foam never rubs against the fabric. The top seam runs level along the whole length, a sign of an even fill, and the cushion sits flush with the oak edge, cut to the bench's exact depth.

For hosting, that side zipper is the whole point, my friends. After a long table of guests, the cover comes off and goes in the machine while the bench stays exactly where it is. Once it is back on, turn the zipped side to the wall so the front stays clean for the next crowd. How many people does your bench seat on a busy night?

More shapes live among custom cushion covers, the loops themselves sit with bouclé and teddy, and washing covers without shrinking them covers the laundry side.

After the party: the cover's way back

  1. Unzip along the side

Slide the cover off the foam and its pale inner layer; the bench stays where it is.

  2. Turn it inside out

The workshop asks for this before every wash.

  3. Wash cool and gentle

Up to 86°F (30°C), with a mild or extra-gentle detergent.

  4. Air dry

Skip the tumble dryer and let the cover dry flat or on a rack.

  5. Zipper to the wall

Once the cover is back on, face the zipped side away from the room.

Put the zipper of a bench cushion cover on the side panel and turn it to the wall: the cover comes off after a party without moving the bench.

Questions buyers ask next

Why put the zipper on the side panel of a bench cushion cover?

A side zipper lets the cover come off while the bench stays put, which is handy after a dinner party. Turned toward the wall, the zipper and its slim pull vanish, so the front of the cushion looks like one clean band of fabric.

What is the pale layer inside a zippered bouclé cover?

It is an inner layer between the foam and the outer bouclé. It keeps the foam from rubbing against the fabric, and the foam stays covered while the outer cover is off for washing.

Does caramel look different on bouclé than on a flat fabric?

Yes, a little. The loops scatter light, so caramel reads softer and slightly lighter than it would on a smooth weave. Look at a swatch in daylight beside the bench before you decide, rather than trusting a screen.
