The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

Can you ship to a PO box or an APO military address?

A PO box is a harbor with no dock for this carrier. The parcel needs a street, a house number and a door.

The quick answer

No: cushion and floor sofa orders can't ship to a PO box or an APO/AE military address, because FedEx needs a full street address and cannot deliver to either. Give a home street address instead, or choose a FedEx pickup point. US service members stationed abroad have used a local home street address. Guam is no longer served after failed deliveries.

Key facts

  • No shipping to APO/AE addresses.
  • FedEx cannot deliver to PO boxes, military ones included; a full street address is required.
  • A FedEx pickup point or an alternative street address can be used instead.
  • A normal home street address worked for a US service member stationed overseas.
  • Shipping to Guam stopped after failed deliveries.
  • A floor sofa arrives as 2-3 roll packs of roughly 12 x 12 x 43-47 in (30 x 30 x 110-120 cm), each about 18-33 lb (8-15 kg).
  • The metal bars travel in a separate box of about 16 x 16 x 2 in (40 x 40 x 5 cm), which needs the same street address.

Why the box number won't do

FedEx works from street addresses. A PO box or an APO/AE postal code gives the driver nowhere to knock, so the parcel can't be delivered, and that holds for military post boxes too.

It matters more for the big orders. A modular floor sofa travels as several roll packs plus a box of bars, and every one of them needs the same real front door.

Follow-up: then what address do I give?

  1. A street address you can reach

A home street address with a house number works. One US service member stationed overseas gave a normal local home address instead of an APO box, and that did the job.

  2. Or a FedEx pickup point

If no home address suits, the shop has suggested a FedEx pickup point as the delivery address.

  3. Get it right at checkout

Enter the full street address, house number included, when you order, so the label is right the first time.

Follow-up: what about Guam?

Not any longer. The shop stopped shipping to Guam after deliveries there failed. Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a route that keeps coming back undelivered.

So, friend: is there a street address near you with a front door and a house number?

Which delivery addresses can FedEx not reach?

  • An APO or AE military postal code
  • A PO box, military or civilian
  • A delivery address in Guam
  • Any address without a street name and house number

FedEx won't deliver to an APO/AE code or a PO box, military ones included. A home street address or a FedEx pickup point gets the parcel through.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

I'm in the US military, stationed overseas. Can you ship to my APO address?

    The workshop's answer

No, the shop can't ship to APO/AE boxes. It can ship to a normal home street address where you're stationed instead.

  2. A common question

Can you send it to a military APO or a PO box?

    The workshop's answer

FedEx needs a full street address and can't deliver to a PO box or an APO postal code. The shop suggested an alternative street address or a FedEx pickup point.

  3. A common question

Do you ship to US territories, or to PO boxes?

    The workshop's answer

The shop stopped shipping to Guam after failed deliveries, and it can't deliver to PO boxes, military post boxes included, so it asks for a street address.

  4. A common question

I'll be away when the order is due. Can you hold it until I'm back?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Share your travel dates and the shop holds the order, reconfirms with you, and ships it to arrive after you return. Exact days can't be guaranteed, but you can adjust the day with the courier.

Questions buyers ask next

Does a FedEx pickup point count as a valid delivery address?

Yes. When a home street address isn't practical, the shop has suggested a FedEx pickup point, which gives the carrier a real counter to deliver to, unlike a PO box or an APO code.

Can a relative's street address stand in for my APO box?

Yes, any full street address where you can collect the parcel works; the carrier needs a street and a house number, not a box. A US service member stationed overseas used a normal local home address in place of an APO box.

Is the Guam restriction permanent?

It stands for now. The shop stopped shipping to Guam after deliveries there failed, so a Guam street address can't be used for a new order at the moment, even with a house number.
