Rust end block, cream seat: reading a modular floor sofa from floor level

Hana gets down to the height of a floor sofa's base, where two velvets meet, and weighs which inch of cushion is worth paying for.

The quick answer

On a modular floor sofa, spend on base thickness and order every piece at once. Thickness sets your seat height, and one extra inch can cost little: one corner cushion went from 5 to 6 in (13 to 15 cm) for under a tenth more, while doubling a set from 4 to 8 in added about half. One order keeps both velvets in one dye lot.

Pinned by Hana: four marks at floor level

Four pins sit low on the photograph, where the rust base, the cream seat, the bolster and the jute rug meet.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

A photograph taken at sitting height

Most sofa photographs are taken standing. This one is taken low, close to where your eyes would be on a floor sofa. That changes what it teaches.

From here the base is plainly thicker than the bolster above it. You can judge the seat height before you own it. Height is a feeling, and this angle lets you feel it. How low do you like to sit when you read?

Two velvets meet at the seam. The rust end block has a mottled sheen, light moving across the pile in patches. The cream seat looks smoother and flatter. Same family of cloth, same side light, two textures. If you are choosing a two-color modular floor sofa, this is the view to study: a dark velvet beside a pale one always reads as texture as well as color.

The bolster lies above the seat with its rust cap facing out. The end color comes back once, at the arm, and stops.

The props stay low and natural. A jute rug meets the velvet at the floor edge, rough against smooth. A large-leaf plant and a woven wall hanging sit in soft focus behind. Nothing competes with the seam.

So where does the money go? Into the base, which is the seat, which is the height. The floor sofa buying notes help you find your number.

The base is the seat. The seat is the height. Pay for the inch you sit on.

A real project

A square mark, a lumpy back, and one patient week

A buyer loved a new velvet floor sofa, then found a square mark on one seat cushion and a lumpy L-shaped back. They wrote to the workshop, worried.

The shop explained two things. Vacuum packing presses marks into velvet, and a back filled with shredded foam needs time to re-expand. It asked for one week.

A week passed and nothing changed. So the shop sent a replacement seat cover. For the back, it asked for photos of the foam with the cover off, then sent a new backrest cushion, with 2 to 4 days' delivery once it reached the courier.

The order of things matters. Wait first. Then photograph the bare foam, because a picture of the cover cannot show what the filling is doing. Our Pattern on the first days after unpacking covers the waiting.

Buyer questions: a round cushion, a color change, a thicker quote

  1. A common question

Could you make a big round floor cushion to fit inside a play tent?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For a 42½ in (108 cm) round cushion, the buyer chose the 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) option and the shop made it 42½ in across. White comes in linen, soft fabric or velvet.

  2. A common question

I've already placed my order. Is it too late to change the color?

    The workshop's answer

Not if you ask quickly. Before production the shop can switch the color; one order went from tobacco to khaki green no. 34. Duplicate orders are canceled, and the final color is confirmed by message.

  3. A common question

How much more does a thicker cushion cost?

    The workshop's answer

It depends on how much thicker. For a 51 x 37 in (130 x 94 cm) reading-nook set, going from 4 in to 8 in (10 to 20 cm) raised the quote by about half again. For a corner cushion with 46 in (117 cm) sides, going from 5 in to 6 in (13 to 15 cm) added less than a tenth.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does new velvet show a square mark after unpacking?

Vacuum packing presses the pile flat, and velvet shows it as a light or dark patch. The fibers usually stand back up over the following days. Unpack soon after delivery and give it a week before you judge.

Can a modular floor sofa mix two velvet colors?

Yes. A rust end block beside a cream seat works because the darker velvet shows a mottled sheen while the paler one looks smoother, so the pair reads as texture as well as color. Order all the pieces together.

How thick should a floor sofa base be?

Thick enough to give the seat height you want, since there is no frame to add any. Stack cushions or folded blankets at home, sit on them, and measure the height that feels right before you choose a thickness.

Is a shredded-foam back cushion supposed to feel lumpy?

Not for long. Shredded foam is a loose filling that re-expands after vacuum packing and can be shaken back into shape. If a back stays lumpy after a week, photograph the foam with the cover off and send it to the maker.
