Oat and rust velvet floor sofa: how the cloth feels, wears and washes

Oat on every face you sit on. Rust around the edges, where shoes and knees meet the sofa first. Soft north light shows the pile.

A floor sofa built from separate pads: oat velvet on every face you sit on, rust velvet wrapped around the edges where scuffs usually show first.

The quick answer

On a two-color velvet floor sofa, put the second color on the side bands instead of splitting top and bottom, because a face-to-face split shows the zipper along one edge. Stacked, the standard floor sofa gives a 13 to 14 in (33 to 36 cm) seat, about 28 in (71 cm) overall with the backrest.

Hand first, then color

Look at the oat before you look at the rust. In soft north light the pile reads matte and close, almost like suede. Where a back pad turns its corner, the light catches the nap and the color lifts a shade. That shift is velvet behaving as velvet does.

The rust is kept to the boxing bands and the ends. Edges are where scuffs show first, so the darker color sits there, and the paler oat stays on the faces you sit on.

The pieces stand free. Two back pads lean on the blush plaster wall, and each could lie flat as an extra mattress. A short arm block slides anywhere along the base. An umbrella tree gives the corner height; a jute rug softens the floor line. A mug rests on paperbacks, and magazines lean on the baseboard. Floor seating invites floor styling.

More two-tone builds are under modular floor sofas. What will your sofa sit on: boards, a rug, or both?

Soft faces. Dark edges. A room that lives close to the floor.

Five places where the cloth and the build explain each other.

Pinned: Low floor sofa in oat velvet with rust velvet side bands, two back pads and an arm block on oak boards by a jute rug
  1. Oat velvet back pad

Each back pad stands free, so it can lean on the wall here or lie flat as an extra floor mattress.

  2. Rust boxing band

The second color lives on the side walls only, which keeps the zipper seam out of sight instead of splitting top and bottom faces.

  3. Loose arm block

A short rectangular block doubles as armrest or lumbar support and slides anywhere along the base.

  4. Umbrella tree

Tall leaves add the height a floor-level sofa lacks, so the corner doesn't feel sunk.

  5. Mug on book stack

Floor seating invites floor styling: a pile of paperbacks becomes the side table.

How this velvet lives, week to week

  • Edges take scuffs first, so the darker rust sits there.
  • With the second color on the side bands, the zipper stays out of sight.
  • Covers unzip and wash on a gentle cycle below 86°F (30°C).
  • Back pads stand free: lean them on the wall or lay them flat.
  • Non-slip fabric underneath keeps big cushions from drifting.
A real project

The heights nobody lists

A buyer in the US ordered our standard floor sofa for a first apartment and asked, before it arrived, how high it would sit. Each seat layer is 6 1/2 to 7 in, so two stacked make a 13 to 14 in seat. The 14 in backrest brings it to about 28 in overall.

Later the two big cushions went side by side instead of stacked, and the worry became sliding. The answer was underneath: non-slip fabric on the base. Two zippered pillowcases came in the box as a gift. The buyer called the couch incredible.

39 x 79 in; seat 13 to 14 in; overall about 28 in

The lesson: Ask for the stacked seat height and the height with the backrest, not only the footprint.

Frames, corners and loft beds

  1. A common question

Can I get gold, bronze or matte frame bars instead of shiny chrome?

    The workshop's answer

Gold and bronze bars are not available; silver is. For a less shiny look, the workshop offered to cover the metal bars in the sofa's own fabric.

  2. A common question

Is there a corner or L-shaped version that seats more than two or three people?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Order two floor sofas and they are built as an L with matching pillows, or choose the corner sofa, which comes with an ottoman. One L set shipped in about 6 parcels.

  3. A common question

Would a floor cushion under a loft bed work as seating and as a sleepover bed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. It is comfortable to sleep on, and most buyers get them for children. Lengths of 70 to 75 in are made routinely; 24 x 70 or 27 x 70 in was suggested here.

On a two-color velvet cushion, put the second color on the side bands. Split top and bottom instead, and the zipper shows along one edge.

Questions buyers ask next

Where does a velvet floor sofa wear first?

At the edges, where feet, knees and bags brush past. That is why this sofa keeps its darker rust on the side bands and saves the paler oat for the faces you sit on.

Can the back pads double as a bed?

Yes. Each back pad stands free, so it can lean against the wall as a backrest or lie flat on the floor as an extra mattress for a guest.

Can I choose which color goes where on a two-tone sofa?

Yes, write your choices in the order note. The tidiest layout keeps one color on the top and bottom faces and the second on the side bands, so the zipper stays hidden.
