The Cutting Table · a checklist answer
How do I measure a curved cushion or a bench with a rounded end?
Also asked as:Is it possible to order a cushion that is curved?Best way to measure the curve?
Numbers alone can't describe a curve. Two methods can, and one of them needs nothing more than wrapping paper and a marker.
SaveThe quick answer
To measure a curved cushion, sketch the seat with its total width and depth, the straight length of each edge before the curve starts, where each curve begins and ends, and the curve's depth or radius. For tricky curves, trace the seat onto wrapping paper, cut it out and photograph it flat beside a tape measure. The workshop confirms the shape before cutting.

Key facts
- Curved, rounded-corner and asymmetrical cushions are made.
- Curves are not interpreted from numbers alone; the sketch must show where each curve starts and ends.
- Each curve needs the straight edge length before it starts and its depth or radius.
- The paper-template method is recommended for tricky curves.
- Each cushion needs its own drawing.
- An arched seat can be drawn as a rectangle plus an arc of a circle.
- If the original cushions are gone, the production team can work out sizes from the furniture.

Method one: the measured sketch
- Total width and total depth of the seat.
- The straight length of each edge before its curve begins.
- The start and end point of every curve, marked on the edge itself.
- The depth or radius of each curve, or the depth at its shallowest and deepest points.
- Photograph the sketch and send it; several cushions means one drawing each.
Method two: the paper template, for tricky curves
- Lay wrapping paper or newspaper over the seat.
- Trace the outline with a marker, following the curve.
- Cut it out and write the widest width and depth on it.
- Photograph it flat, from above, with a tape measure beside it.
Three curves the workshop has drawn up
| Piece | Size | How the curve was described |
|---|---|---|
| Bench rounded at one end | 33 x 20 in (84 x 51 cm) | The owner's shop drawings |
| Arched window seat | 67 in wide, 47 in deep (170 x 120 cm) | A 64.5 x 21 in (164 x 53 cm) rectangle plus an arc from a 64.5 in (164 cm) circle |
| Curved sofa base | 68 in back, 63 in front, 32 in deep (173, 160, 81 cm) | Ends curving between the two edges, 4 in (10 cm) thick |
Why a curve needs start points, not just sizes
Give me 33 x 20 in for a bench cushion and I can cut a rectangle. Tell me it rounds at one end and I still don't know where the round begins, how deep it runs, or whether it's a true half-circle. So the workshop won't interpret a curve from numbers alone. Measure twice; the fabric remembers.
Lost the old cushions? The production team can work out the sizes from the furniture itself. Once the shape is confirmed, order through the custom-shape listing, choosing the range by the longest length and the width, and upload the sketch. The chord, rise and radius Pattern shows the geometry, and the paper template Pattern walks through tracing. Which edge of your seat bends, partner: the front or the end?
The workshop won't read a curve from numbers alone: a curved cushion needs a sketch marking where each curve starts and ends, plus its depth.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Is a curved cushion possible, and what's the best way to measure the curve?
The workshop's answerYes, curved, rounded-corner and asymmetrical cushions are all possible. Either sketch the seat with total width, total depth and the depth at the shallowest and deepest points of the curve, or, for tricky curves, trace it onto wrapping paper or newspaper, cut it out and photograph it flat beside a tape measure.
- A common question
Can a bench cushion round off at one end instead of being square?
The workshop's answerYes. Send a simple sketch with the measurements that shows where the curve starts and ends. Once the shape is confirmed, order through the custom-shape listing, choosing the range by the longest length and the width, and upload the sketch.
- A common question
My old seat cushions are gone. Can you still make new ones rounded at the back?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop needs the straight length of each side before the curve and the curve's depth or radius, ideally on a sketch. Without the originals, the production team works out the sizes from the sofa itself.
- A common question
Can you make several curved cushions from one plan?
The workshop's answerYes, but send each cushion as its own drawing, marking the start and end of every curve along the edges and the depth of each curve. Very complex curved shapes may be declined if a precise fit can't be guaranteed.
Questions buyers ask next
When should I trace a template instead of drawing?
When the curve is irregular or you can't find where it starts with a tape. Tracing on wrapping paper or newspaper, cutting it out and photographing it flat beside a tape measure records the curve exactly as the seat has it.
Does a curved rocking chair or barrel chair seat work the same way?
Yes. Trace the seat onto paper, cut it out, write the widest width and depth on it and photograph it from above beside a tape measure. Or send the width, depth, curve start and end points and a top-down photo.
Will the workshop take on any curved shape?
Most of them. Curved, rounded-corner and asymmetrical cushions are made routinely, but very complex or multi-curve shapes may be declined when a precise fit can't be guaranteed. Send the drawing first and you'll hear before you order.
