The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

Can I get an invoice for my custom cushion order?

Also asked as:Can I get an invoice?I need a receipt for my order.

Paper follows the cushion in this trade, not the other way around. Order first, then ask, and a PDF comes back in the same thread.

The quick answer

Yes, you can get a PDF invoice for your marketplace order: once the order is placed, ask in marketplace messages and the shop creates the invoice and attaches it in that conversation. It works for bookkeeping, and it can be made out to a specific billing address if you give one.

Four steps to a PDF invoice

  • Place the order first; the invoice is made after it.
  • Ask for it in marketplace messages, in the conversation about your order.
  • Write the billing address the invoice should carry.
  • Look for the PDF attached in that same thread.

Why the PDF invoice comes after the order

I've written receipts by hand on a shop counter for longer than most folks have owned a sofa, my friend, and the rule hasn't changed: the paper follows the work. Here the order comes first. Once it's placed, a message asking for an invoice is all it takes; the shop makes a PDF and attaches it right there in your marketplace conversation.

It serves for bookkeeping, and it can be made out to whatever billing address you name. Business or household, you get the same thing: a PDF you can file. A seam is a promise, and so is a straight record of what you bought.

Is the invoice for your own records, or for somebody else's desk?

While you're in the messages anyway

The same thread handles more than paper. Ask, and the shop sends real customer photos and videos, with someone sitting on a sofa for scale and close-ups of the details. If the marketplace wouldn't carry a photo on your first message, that's the marketplace, not you: attachments go through once the shop has replied.

Thinking about another piece? The quote Pattern lists what to send for a custom size, and the personalization note Pattern shows how to write your measurements so nobody guesses. Some fabrics can also be bought by the meter, up to 55 in (140 cm) wide; the fabric yardage Pattern helps you count it.

The invoice follows the order: place it, then ask in marketplace messages, and a PDF invoice arrives made out to the billing address you give.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Could I have an invoice for my order?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Once the order is placed, let the shop know and it will create a PDF invoice and send it through marketplace messages.

  2. A common question

I need an official invoice for my bookkeeping. Is that possible?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The shop attaches an invoice in marketplace messages on request.

  3. A common question

Why won't the marketplace let me attach a photo to my first message?

    The workshop's answer

The marketplace doesn't deliver attachments on a first message. Once the shop replies, you can attach photos and drawings in the same conversation; custom-shape listings also let you upload images at checkout.

  4. A common question

Can I buy extra fabric to match my cushions?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Fabrics such as the linen can be bought by the meter, up to 55 in (140 cm) wide, to upholster matching chairs. For a throw, sew it onto a blanket or backing, as it's thin on its own.

Questions buyers ask next

Can I get the invoice before I pay for the order?

The invoice is created after the order is placed, not before. Once it's in, ask in marketplace messages and the PDF comes back attached in that conversation, ready to file or pass along.

Can the invoice show a billing address different from the shipping address?

Yes. Give the billing address you want on it when you ask, and the invoice is made out to that address. The cushions still ship to the delivery address on the order.

What format does the invoice come in?

A PDF, attached in your marketplace conversation with the shop. That makes it easy to save for bookkeeping or hand to whoever keeps your records, without waiting for anything to arrive by mail.
