The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

Does the sofa or the velvet replacement cover contain hemp?

Also asked as:It says hemp. Is that accurate? How much percent is hemp?

A listing said hemp. The cloth said otherwise. Here is what your hand will actually meet.

The zipper runs along the side seam, so the cover comes off for cleaning while the front stays clean-lined.

The quick answer

No, neither the corner teddy sofa nor the velvet replacement covers contain hemp. The sofa is covered in corduroy and the velvet covers are 100% polyester. Listings that once mentioned hemp have been corrected, and hemp fabric is not offered at all; for a natural, low-sheen look, ask about the natural linen series or the 100% cotton range.

What the cloth really is, fiber by fiber

  • Corner teddy sofa: corduroy, with no hemp in it.
  • Velvet replacement covers: 100% polyester, with a short, tight pile.
  • Hemp: not offered in any range at all.
  • The listings: the ones that said hemp were corrected after buyers asked.

A word on a listing is not a fiber in the hand

Two buyers, two listings, the same doubt. One read hemp on the corner sofa and asked whether it was accurate; another asked what share of the velvet cover was hemp. The answer both times was none. The sofa wears ribbed corduroy, soft under the palm, and the velvet covers are polyester through and through. The workshop corrected the materials section on each listing.

I understand the pull of the word. Hemp suggests a dry hand and the oat-and-straw tones of undyed cloth. Polyester velvet is another mood entirely: depth, and a soft sheen where the pile catches the lamp. Neither is wrong. They are different kinds of light.

If it was the look you loved rather than the fiber, the charts below come closest. What drew you to hemp, my friends: the texture, the color, or the plant itself?

If the hemp look was what you wanted

  • Natural linen series: neutral shades with a low sheen, in the linen and cotton-linen family.
  • L-01: a plain white linen.
  • 100% cotton range: suggested for an unbleached white or cream look.
  • Real-life photos: ask for them before you commit. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does.
  • Side by side: the fabric types compared Pattern sets each cloth next to the others, and new covers start under cushion covers.

Hemp fabric is not offered at all; for a natural, low-sheen cover, the natural linen series or the 100% cotton range comes closest.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What is the velvet replacement cover made of? Is there any hemp in it?

    The workshop's answer

It is polyester, not hemp, and the workshop corrected the materials section of the listing.

  2. A common question

The listing says hemp. Is the corner sofa really hemp?

    The workshop's answer

No. There is no hemp in it; the sofa is corduroy, and the listing information was corrected.

  3. A common question

Is the velvet shiny or matte, and how short is the pile?

    The workshop's answer

The pile is short and tight and feels smooth. Its sheen has been described both as slightly glossy and as not shiny, so ask for real-life photos; for a low-sheen look, choose linen.

  4. A common question

Do you carry white, cream or natural neutrals?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. L-01 is a plain white linen, white velvet is available, and a natural linen series covers neutral shades. For an unbleached white or cream look, the 100% cotton range is suggested.

Questions buyers ask next

Which wears better on a sofa cover, velvet or linen?

All the fabrics are upholstery-grade and wear well, and velvet, soft fabric and linen are broadly equal. For the heaviest daily use choose soft fabric; between the two, pick velvet over linen, and use the outdoor range anywhere the cover may get wet.

Are there patterned covers, or only plain colors?

Mostly plain colors, but extra charts carry stripes, oriental designs, plaid and tartan, patterned velvets and animal prints at no extra cost. A print found elsewhere can sometimes be sourced from a photo, at a higher price.

How can I confirm a cover's fiber content before ordering?

Ask the workshop for the material composition before you order. When buyers questioned the hemp wording, the shop answered directly, named the real fibers, corduroy for the sofa and 100% polyester for the velvet covers, and corrected the listings.
