A Reading by ÉlodieReplacement Cushion Covers
Four zippered box cushion covers, and the foam each one is waiting for
Oxblood, olive, aqua and oatmeal, stacked empty with their zippers half open. Élodie reads the colors first, then looks inside at what will fill them.
SaveThe quick answer
A zippered box cushion cover is only half a cushion: its box height sets how much foam goes inside, and doubling the height from 6 in to 12 in roughly doubles the fill and the cost. Covers can be ordered alone for foam you already own, with the zipper on the side wall and its tape matched to the piping.
The cushion, cut open
Cover fabric. A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.
Piping. A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.
Fiber wrap. Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.
Foam core. About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.
Zipper. Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.
Base panel. The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.
Cross-section: from zipper tape to foam core
Four empty covers, and already they tell you everything about the cushions they will become.
Start where the eye starts, with color. Oxblood velvet with ivory piping and a tone-matched zipper that vanishes into the side wall. Olive with mustard piping and, my favorite detail, mustard zipper tape, so even the opening looks designed. Aqua velvet outlined in blush pink, a soft complementary edge. Oatmeal with dove-gray cord and dove-gray tape, the quiet voice at the bottom. The eye sits down first, and here it sits down four times.
Now cut one open in your mind, my friends. From the outside in: the face fabric, the piping cord caught in the seam, the boxing strip that forms the side wall, and the zipper running along that wall. The half-open pulls show where it lives. Once the cushion is on a bench, that wall faces the back and the zipper disappears. The Pattern on zipper placement explains why the back wall is its proper home.
Inside goes the part you never see and always feel. The box height of a cover fixes the height of the foam, and the foam decides the sit. A 12 in (30 cm) box holds about twice the fill of a 6 in (15 cm) one, so it costs more and sits deeper. A slim box suits a dining bench, where you want to perch rather than sink. If your old foam still holds its shape, custom cushion covers alone may be all you need; the Pattern on covers for existing foam shows how to measure it.
Velvet and linen-look weaves stacked together show one more thing: the same box reads differently in sheen and in matte. Velvet catches light on its top face and darkens on the walls; the matte weave stays even all round. Choose the firmness first, then let the fabric set the mood. The foam firmness finder helps with the first half.
Same cover, two heights
| 6 in (15 cm) box | 12 in (30 cm) box | |
|---|---|---|
| Foam or fill | The base amount | About twice the base amount |
| Cost | The listed price for the size | Roughly double, on the same footprint |
| How it sits | Firm and close to the frame | Deep and plush, pouf-like |
| Good for | Benches, window seats, dining pads | Pet beds, floor cushions, tall seats |
Pinned by Élodie: four zippers, four piping colors
Five pins read each opening in turn: oxblood tape hidden in velvet, mustard on olive, blush on aqua, a half-open pull and gray on oatmeal.

- Burgundy velvet zipper
Tone-matched zipper tape disappears into the velvet side wall.
- Mustard zip on olive
The zipper tape matches the mustard piping, so even the opening looks designed.
- Pink piping on aqua
Blush cord on aqua velvet is a soft complementary outline.
- Pink zipper pull
A half-open zipper shows the opening runs along the side wall, hidden once seated.
- Gray zip on oatmeal
Gray tape and gray piping keep the pale cover understated.

A cat, a velvet cube and the price of height
One buyer wrote in about a cat's favorite corner. They wanted a white or ivory velvet cushion, 25 x 25 in (64 x 64 cm) and 12 in (30 cm) high: a small throne.
The first quote surprised them, because the listing showed a lower figure. The difference was height. The listing price was for 6 in (15 cm); at 12 in the cushion holds twice the fill, so it costs about twice as much. The workshop explained it plainly, and the final piece was made 24 x 24 x 12 in (61 x 61 x 30 cm), with no back cushion.
The lesson for any cover-and-foam order: height is the line that moves the price. Ask about it before you compare.
On the cutting table: the four-cover stack
| Pieces | Four zippered box cushion covers, covers-only or filled |
|---|---|
| Fabrics | Oxblood velvet, aqua velvet, olive and oatmeal linen-look |
| Piping | Contrast: ivory, mustard, blush pink and dove gray |
| Zipper | Along the side wall, tape matched to the piping |
| Edge | Box, with a boxing strip forming the side wall |
| Inside | Your own foam, or a new insert cut to the box height |
| Height rule | Doubling the box height roughly doubles fill and cost |
| Best for | Replacing tired covers on foam that still holds its shape |

Buyer questions: covers only, a return, and pillows that arrive flat
- A common question
I only need new covers, not foam. Can you quote covers alone?
The workshop's answerYes, covers-only orders are made. One set of eight was five backs at 22 1/4 x 16 x 2 1/2 in (56.5 x 41 x 6.5 cm), two seats at 22 1/4 x 25 1/4 x 3 1/4 in (56.5 x 64 x 8 cm) and a couch cover at 68 x 25 1/4 x 3 1/4 in (173 x 64 x 8 cm), and a set that size earned a bulk discount. A single ottoman cover can be ordered too.
- A common question
I ordered the covers-only listing thinking it was a whole couch. Can I send it back?
The workshop's answerThe title and description do say covers only, and the workshop offered to add the filling at a fair price. If you still prefer to return them, check the listing's return terms first; in this case the covers could go back, with return shipping on the buyer.
- A common question
My pillows arrived looking underfilled, and the filling feels almost like paper. Is that normal?
The workshop's answerVacuum packing pushes the filling toward the middle. Pat and shake each pillow to move it back into the corners and give it 1 to 2 days. The corners will stay a little softer than the body, but there should be no empty gaps. The filling is shredded foam made on the workshop's own machine, not paper.
A zippered cushion cover looks designed when the zipper tape matches the piping: mustard tape on olive, gray tape on oatmeal.

Questions buyers ask next
Which wall of a box cushion should hide the zipper?
The back wall, the one that faces the frame or the wall once the cushion is in place. A zipper there opens wide enough to insert foam and disappears when you sit. Matching the zipper tape to the piping hides it further.
Will a new cover fit the foam from my old cushion?
Yes, if you measure the foam itself rather than the old cover: length, depth and height, plus any shaped corners. Foam that has lost height may need replacing, since a crisp new cover shows every dip in a tired insert.
Does velvet or a matte weave show a box edge better?
A matte weave shows the box shape evenly, because every face reflects the same light. Velvet catches light on the top and darkens on the side walls, which makes the box look deeper and more tailored but also shows crushing on the top face.
Why does a thicker cushion cost so much more?
Because the fill scales with height. On the same footprint, a 12 in cushion holds about twice the fill of a 6 in cushion, so material and price roughly double. Ask for a quote at the height you want before comparing listings.
