The Cutting Table · a checklist answer
Does a notch or cut-out make a custom cushion more expensive?
Also asked as:Does the price change with a corner?Cushion with square notches at the corners?
A notch is a few extra cuts. What it costs depends less on the cut than on which listing the cushion is ordered from.
SaveThe quick answer
Usually not, if you order on the custom-shape listing: the price follows the size range you pick, and a corner notch or cut-out is included in the custom cutting. That listing costs more than the rectangle listing, though. On individually quoted cushions, shaping around obstacles such as window handles has added a little to the quote, and very large odd shapes may carry a fee confirmed before ordering.

When a notch costs nothing extra
- Ordered on the custom-shape listing. Pick the size range that covers your longest length and deepest depth; the notch rides along in the custom cutting.
- Square corner notches, such as a buyer's 2 3/8 in (6 cm) squares at each corner, count as part of the shape, not as an add-on.
- Drawn and measured up front: each notch's width, depth and position on the sketch, so the quote and the cut agree.
When it does add up
- A notched cushion ordered on the rectangle listing. The rectangle rate is lower, so a difference gets settled later.
- Individually quoted cut-outs around obstacles, such as window handles poking into a seat: the extra cutting is priced into the quote over the plain cushion.
- Very large custom shapes, which may carry a size-dependent customization fee. The workshop confirms it before you order, not after.
Window handles in the way
A buyer had window handles sticking out into a window seat and asked whether the cushion could be shaped around them. It could. The 13 x 92 in (33 x 234 cm) linen cushion was quoted with the cut-outs at about 10% more than the plain rectangle. The difference was stated in the quote, before any cutting.
Order it so the numbers agree
Tolerance is kindness to your future self, and so is ordering from the right listing. Draw the cushion, give each notch three numbers (width, depth, distance from the nearest corner), and measure to the nearest 1/4 in. The notched cushions pattern and custom cushion drawings show the layout; the notch entry has the vocabulary.
For seats built around casings and posts, see notched window seat cushions and the shapes under bench cushions. How many notches does your seat need, partner?
Shaping a quoted cushion around window handles added a little to the plain price; on the custom-shape listing, the notch itself costs nothing extra.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Does a corner cut-out or notch make the cushion more expensive?
The workshop's answerOn the custom-shape listing the price follows the size ranges you select, and the corner shape costs nothing extra. That listing is priced above the rectangle listing, so a notched cushion ordered as a rectangle leaves a difference to settle; one remade cover carried exactly that.
- A common question
Handles stick into my window seat. Can the cushion be shaped around them?
The workshop's answerYes. A custom shape can be cut around obstacles, and the extra cutting is priced into the quote; a 13 x 92 in (33 x 234 cm) linen cushion was quoted that way.
- A common question
Can you cut a cushion to fit around a post, pillar or bench legs?
The workshop's answerYes. Draw the cushion with each notch's width, depth and position and add photos; the workshop redraws it as a template for your approval before cutting. Leg notches and ties are available.
- A common question
The size options only ask for width and length. What do I pick for an odd shape?
The workshop's answerChoose the range that covers your maximum length and deepest depth; it only sets the price. Then write every exact side, thickness and fabric code in personalization, or upload a marked-up drawing.
Questions buyers ask next
Can a chair cushion be wider at the front than at the back?
Yes, tapered chair cushions are routine. Send the front width, back width, depth, side edges and thickness with a tape-measure photo, and the fit is checked before the cushion is made.
How large can a corner floor cushion be made?
48 in (122 cm) is the maximum for the tufted and corner floor cushions, so 56 in or 75 in versions aren't made. Two corner cushions can be combined into a half circle instead.
When is the customization fee on a big odd shape confirmed?
Before you order. The fee depends on size and applies only to some very large custom shapes, so send the drawing with your quote request and the workshop confirms whether any fee applies.
