The Cutting Table · a common question
What happens if my exact cushion size is bigger than the option I paid for?
Also asked as:I made a mistake with the size rangePlease send me a link to pay the extra
Nobody at the cutting table sews a size you didn't ask for. When the option you clicked and the size you wrote disagree, the work stops and somebody writes to you first.
The quick answer
If your written size is bigger than the option you paid for, production pauses until the size is confirmed, and a gap of about 3-5 in (8-13 cm) is simply absorbed. A bigger gap needs more fabric and labor, so the workshop confirms the price for your real size and sends a top-up payment link for the difference. Cutting starts once it's paid.
SaveKey facts
- Orders are checked for mismatches between the size option and the written size.
- Production doesn't start until the size is confirmed.
- The standard size isn't made when you've written different custom dimensions.
- Differences of about 3-5 in (8-13 cm) are absorbed.
- Larger differences are paid through a separate top-up link before cutting.
- Two orders of the same listing can be combined to cover a larger size.
- Cancelling and reordering in the right size range is another way to settle the difference.
Have it made
Have Harlan’s workshop cut this for you
Old upholsterers will tell you the real cutting happens in the conversation, long before the shears come out. Tell the workshop what you sit on, and they will talk it through with you. — Harlan
Leave your details and the workshop will call you to confirm measurements, fabric, foam and piping. No prices, dates or payment on this page: it is a request, not an order.
Why the work stops before the scissors move
In a good shop the note beats the dropdown. If you picked one size and wrote another, the cushion isn't cut to the option you clicked. The order is paused and someone asks which is right. A seam is a promise, my friend, and nobody sews a promise they haven't checked.
If it was a typo, send the correct measurements and production carries on. If the bigger size is right, the difference gets settled first.
How big a gap costs extra
| Gap between option and real size | What happened |
|---|---|
| About 3-5 in (8-13 cm) or less | Absorbed, nothing more to pay |
| 91 in chosen for a 109 in cushion, nearly 20 in (51 cm) | More fabric and labor, so a top-up was asked |
| Real size almost double the one ordered | A top-up link, or the standard size made instead |
Where small ends is a judgment call; ask before you order if you are close.
Four ways to settle a custom cushion size difference
- Pay the top-up link, a separate extra-fee listing for customization. Production starts when it's paid.
- Place one more order of the same listing, and the two payments are combined.
- Cancel and reorder in the right range, before production starts.
- Keep the standard size you selected, if it suits your seat after all.
The option someone else ordered
Some listings carry a custom option made for another buyer, priced for that buyer's size, not yours. Pick it by mistake and the shop works out the difference, and it has been reduced more than once.
The cleaner road is the option just above your size, with exact numbers in the note; the personalization note pattern shows what to write, and sizes not on the menu covers the rest. What does your bench measure, end to end?
A custom cushion is never cut to the dropdown when the note says otherwise: production pauses until the size is confirmed and any difference is paid.

Buyer questions
- A common question
The size range I paid for doesn't match the exact size in my order. What now?
The workshop's answerProduction is paused and you're asked to confirm. If the larger size is right, place one more order of the same listing so the payments combine, or cancel and reorder in the right range. If it was a typo, send the correct measurements.
- A common question
What if the size I picked at checkout is very different from my real size?
The workshop's answerA difference of 3 to 5 in is no problem. A gap like 91 in selected against 109 in needed takes more material and labor, so an extra payment was requested.
- A common question
Will I pay extra if my exact size is a bit larger than the option?
The workshop's answerNot for small differences: a 14.5 x 60 in bench ordered on the 14 x 56 in option wasn't charged extra. Bigger gaps, like a 16 x 94 in cushion on a smaller option, were settled with a top-up link.
Questions buyers ask next
Is the top-up always the full price difference?
Not always. Some top-ups for a real size have been rounded down, and when a buyer picked a custom option made for someone else, the difference owed was reduced too. The top-up link shows the exact amount before you pay.
How do I avoid a top-up altogether?
Choose the size option just above your real measurements and write the exact size in the personalization note. The option sets the price; the note sets the cut.
Where does the 3-5 inch allowance end?
It's a guide, not a line. A half-inch by 4 in overage passed with nothing to pay, while a gap of nearly 20 in was charged. If you're close, ask before you order.
