A turquoise hallway bench cushion, seen from ten feet and ten inches
Stand at the front door and you see one thing: a block of turquoise on pale oak. Walk up to it and you see three more. Both views have to be right.
SaveThe quick answer
A custom bench cushion for an entryway reads best from across the room when it is one solid color in self piping, cut almost flush with the bench ends. Up close, what matters is a straight piping line and the exact size, thickness, fabric code and piping code written in your order notes.
A bench cushion like this one, cut open
Linen-look cover. Turquoise weave; the cover comes off on a hidden zipper.
Self piping. The same fabric as the cover, so it disappears from across the room.
Fiber wrap. Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.
High-resilience foam. About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm; 3 in (7.6 cm) thick.
Hidden zipper. Concealed for a clean look, with double-stitched seams.
Base panel. The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.
From the front door: one block of turquoise
I judge a hallway bench cushion twice. Once from the front door, coat still on. Once from arm's length, when I finally sit down to pull my boots off.
From ten feet, this one is a single idea. The hall is beige and oak; the seat is turquoise and carries every bit of color in the room. The light oak waterfall bench is a plain slab, so the cushion is cut almost flush with its ends. The grain stays on show and the outline stays clean.
The cream linen pillow and the soft gray wool one lean against the wall to take the edge off. Without them the bench looks like a waiting room. The eucalyptus on the floating shelf is gray-green, which ties the teal to the oak above it.
Up close, the story is the edge. Self piping runs the length of the front. From the door it vanishes; from here you can see whether it runs true. A straight welt is a kind of honesty. I once piped a bench like this in contrast, dear, and from the door it looked like a diagram of a bench. Where do you first see your bench from?
Where to stand for each pin
Five pins: some read from the door, some only from the seat.

- Turquoise seat top
A bright seat turns a plain oak bench into a welcoming hallway spot.
- Self piping edge
Self piping keeps the modern bench silhouette clean.
- Cream and gray pillows
Two neutral pillows tone the turquoise down for everyday use.
- Eucalyptus vase
Gray-green eucalyptus bridges the teal seat and the oak shelf.
- Oak waterfall base
The cushion sits almost flush with the bench ends so the grain stays on show.

Ten feet away, ten inches away
| Detail | From the front door | Up close |
|---|---|---|
| Color | One turquoise block in a beige hall | A linen-look weave with texture |
| Piping | Invisible: self piping | Must run straight along the front |
| Ends | Cushion and bench read as one slab | Cut almost flush; the oak grain shows |
| Pillows | Two soft neutrals calm the color | Cream linen and gray wool, leaning |
| Eucalyptus | A gray-green note up high | Links the teal seat to the oak shelf |
Two long linen runs, 3 inches thick
A buyer in the US wanted two tufted linen cushions for long seating runs: one 58 x 16 x 3 in (147 x 41 x 7.6 cm), the other 110.5 x 20 x 3 in (281 x 51 x 7.6 cm). They asked about the materials, and the workshop confirmed it would make both custom sizes in real linen.
Here is the ten-foot lesson in that order. Tufting reads from across a room as a rhythm of buttons, so it is worth doing well, and on a long, thin cushion there is a lot of it. Those runs cost more per square inch than a squarer cushion would, because the tufting labor follows the length.
- Sizes
- 58 x 16 x 3 in; 110.5 x 20 x 3 in
- Fabric
- Real linen, cream
The lesson: Long, thin tufted cushions cost more per area because tufting labor runs along their length.
Buyer questions: codes, curves and cost
- A common question
What exactly should I write in the personalization box?
The workshop's answerYour exact size (width x length), the thickness, the main fabric code and the piping code, or 'same piping' or 'no piping'. A color name like 'deep red' isn't enough; the chart code is needed. If size and range don't match, the workshop asks before production.
- A common question
Can you make a cushion with curves, for a curved banquette or a rounded seat?
The workshop's answerMild curves are possible, but the workshop promises nothing until its craftsmen see a drawing with measurements and photos of the seat. It says honestly when a fit is risky, and it has declined a round bay window whose curve was too pronounced to make accurately from a distance.
- A common question
How are custom tufted bench cushions priced?
The workshop's answerBy size; ask whether shipping is in the quote. Past quotes range from a 14 x 34 in bench cushion up to a 130 x 24 in bench at 4 in thick. Send your exact size for a price.
From ten feet, self piping disappears and a bench cushion reads as one clean block of color; contrast piping draws its outline instead.

Have the tape measure handy when they call. Old cushions shrink and sag; the seat underneath does not. — Maggie

Questions buyers ask next
Should a bench cushion stop flush with the ends of the bench?
On a slab or waterfall bench, cutting it almost flush keeps the grain of the ends on show and the outline clean. Measure the top wood to wood and give exact numbers.
What thickness suits a slim modern bench?
Three inches (7.6 cm) is the best-selling thickness, and both long linen runs in past orders were 3 in. It keeps a slim bench's profile low while the high-resilience foam holds its shape.
Can I choose contrast piping for a hallway bench instead?
Yes. Piping is included and any piping color costs nothing extra. Contrast piping outlines the cushion from across the room; self piping keeps a minimal bench quieter and lets the color work.
