A kids floor sofa arch in rust corduroy, and how its color moves through the day

Hana reads a toddler peeking over a rust arch by a window, then follows the rust from morning daylight to evening lamp light to the phone in your hand.

The quick answer

Rust corduroy changes with the light: by a morning window it reads bright and warm, under an evening lamp it deepens toward brick, and on a screen it can shift again. Judge a kids floor sofa color in daylight, in the room where it will live. There is no darker rust or black on the list; anthracite and brown are the darkest.

Start with the child at the top of the arch, then follow the pins down through rust, espresso and cream to the window light on the left.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

The same rust at 9 a.m., at 7 p.m. and on your phone

A child's chin rests on the top of a rust arch. That is the whole measurement.

The piece is a nesting rainbow in corduroy: a rust outer arch, an espresso arch inside it, and a cream dome at floor level. The top of the outer arch sits at a standing toddler's chin. Tall enough to peek over. Low enough to climb. Height is a feeling, and this one feels like a hiding place.

The child leans on the highest point, so the top has to be firm enough to hold its curve under weight. It does. The espresso arch makes a shaded tunnel beneath, and the cream dome is the piece small hands pull out first.

The light comes from the left, through a sheer curtain. It is soft morning daylight, and it shows the rust honestly: warm, a little orange at the rib tops, brown in the grooves. The window keeps the left of the frame airy while rust fills the right. The jute rug and oak boards belong to the same family of warm neutrals, and the framed print stays small and high, out of play.

At seven in the evening the same arch is another color. A lamp is warmer and lower than a window, the grooves fill with shadow, and the rust slides toward brick. The espresso goes almost black. Only the cream holds. On a phone the rust moves again, often brighter, sometimes cooler. Three honest answers to three kinds of light.

So choose in the light the room actually has, at the hour it is used most. Where does morning light enter your playroom? The screen versus daylight pattern shows a simple swatch test, the size-by-age pattern helps with height, and more pieces sit in the kids floor sofas atlas and on the corduroy shelf.

One rust, three lights

  • Rust at the window, 9 a.m.#B5552CSide daylight. Rib tops glow orange; the grooves stay brown.
  • Rust under a lamp, 7 p.m.#8A3F22Warm bulb light deepens it toward brick.
  • Rust on a phone screen#C2603AA screen may brighten or cool it. Hold a swatch by your own window instead.
  • Espresso#4A3226The darkest piece in the set. It goes nearly black in evening light.
  • Cream#EFE6D3Holds steady in every light, which is why the eye keeps returning to it.
A real project

A birthday gift and a date that moved

A grandparent in the US ordered a small floor couch as a birthday gift. When the estimated date slipped, they were upset, and fairly so. They had assumed it shipped the day they ordered.

It could not. These pieces are made to order, and there is no stock on a shelf. The workshop sent it by expedited courier, quoted at 3 to 5 days in transit, and the granddaughter loved her little couch.

For a gift, write the date at checkout. Made-to-order pieces need production time before they travel.

A deadline is a measurement too. Give it with the others. Then it can be kept.

Buyer questions: size, color and the bars inside

  1. A common question

    Is a 32 x 32 inch corner floor cushion too small for a four-year-old?

    The workshop's answer

At 32 x 32 in (80 x 80 cm) it is generally a cozy size for a four-year-old; the pieces in the listing photos are 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm). Mark a 32 x 32 in (80 x 80 cm) square on the floor where it will go to see how it fits.

  2. A common question

Does the floor sofa come in black, lavender, mint green or a darker rust?

    The workshop's answer

Only the listed colors are available. There is no black; anthracite and brown are the darkest. There is no lavender, mint or dark rust either, and the water green is a blue-green shade.

  3. A common question

How many metal bars hold up the backrests, and does the long back need two?

    The workshop's answer

A standard sofa comes with a set of 4 bars: 2 for the sides and 2 for the long back. A closed-corner sofa uses 4 L-shaped frame sets, each built from connecting pieces.

A rainbow play arch is the right height when its top reaches a standing toddler's chin: tall enough to peek over, low enough to climb.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does rust corduroy look darker in the evening than in the morning?

Lamp light is warmer and comes from one low source, so the grooves of the corduroy hold more shadow and the color slides toward brick and brown. Check the color at the hour the room is used most.

How tall should a rainbow play arch be for a toddler?

A good guide is chin height for a standing child. At that height a toddler can peek over the top and still climb it, and the top should be firm enough to hold its curve when they lean on it.

Can I choose a kids floor sofa color from a photo on my phone?

Use the photo to narrow the choice, not to decide. Screens can brighten or cool a color, so compare the listed shade with a swatch or finished-cushion photos, and look at it in daylight in the playroom itself.
