A Reading by HanaKids' Floor Sofas & Play Couches

A cream corduroy kids floor sofa, and the toddler who hugs its arm

Hana takes the play couch apart layer by layer: a low stacked base, back wedges, round pillows and bolster arms made to be leaned on for a whole picture book.

Rounded arms and a low seat make the sofa something to lean on as much as sit on.

The quick answer

A kids floor sofa built for long sitting has a low stacked base a toddler can climb onto, back wedges for support, and rounded bolster arms soft enough to lean a cheek on. Put it on a thick rug beside a basket of books, and it becomes the reading corner rather than just a seat.

The cushion, cut open

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 4 in (10 cm) on 17¾ in, to proportion.1. Cover fabric: A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Cover fabric3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core2.0 lb HR foam4 in10 cm17¾ in deep · 45 cm

Four layers, from the rug up

The child is not sitting. The child is leaning, cheek on the arm. That is what a kids floor sofa is for.

Read it from the floor. First the rug, cream and thick. Then the base: two stacked slabs, low enough for small climbers. Then the back wedges. Then two round pillows that fill the corners of the wedges and make the sofa look plump. Last, the bolster arms. Rounded. Soft enough for a face.

Long sitting is mostly leaning. Children measure comfort with their whole body. A child reads half across an arm, slides down, sits up again. Every surface here allows it. Nothing is square where a head might go.

Warm light comes from the right and rakes across the ribs of the corduroy. Front light would flatten them. The moon, cloud and star decals set a bedtime mood. A rope basket of books, a stacking toy, a bunny and a few blocks show the scale at a glance.

The basket matters most. Next to books, a sofa becomes a reading corner.

Where does your child read now?

A seat is for sitting. An arm is for leaning. A child uses both, and then the floor.

The questions one careful parent asked first

A buyer messaged the workshop from overseas about a 47 x 47 in (120 x 120 cm) corduroy corner floor sofa in anthracite. They asked about fiber content, the rib direction on the side band, child safety, and whether it would arrive before a family trip.

The workshop answered each one. The corduroy is polyester, one of the fabrics from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239). The ribs on the side band run horizontally, because the width of the fabric roll decides it and horizontal ribs avoid a join. The workshop also shared real-home photos from other buyers in the same anthracite.

The family ordered once the workshop confirmed delivery within two weeks, before the trip. Careful questions. Clear answers. For sizing, see kids floor sofa size by age. For ribs, corduroy wale and nap direction.

The lesson: Ask for real-room photos of the exact color; rib direction on side bands depends on the width of the fabric roll.

Buyer questions: velvet or linen, a 68 in length, one shop in two places

  1. A common question

The cushion in your photo looks like velvet, but the listing says linen. Which is it?

    The workshop's answer

Linen, on that listing. The same cushion can be made in velvet from the velvet chart, and the fabric can be switched after ordering as long as production has not started; one buyer changed to a velvet color the day after ordering.

  2. A common question

Can the modular floor sofa be made to a custom length, like 68 inches, to fit my space?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, at no extra charge. Order the standard sofa and write the length you need in the personalization box.

  3. A common question

Is your own website run by the same shop as your marketplace store?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Same shop name, same team. Sofas are often priced lower on the website than on the marketplace.

A kids floor sofa is for leaning as much as sitting: a rounded bolster arm soft enough for a cheek keeps a toddler there for a whole picture book.

Questions buyers ask next

How low should a kids floor sofa be for a toddler?

Low enough to climb onto from the floor. In this nursery the base is two stacked slabs, which keeps the seat close to the rug, and a thick rug below gives a soft landing when a child slides off.

Is corduroy a good fabric for a kids play couch?

It is soft to lean on, and its ribs show texture in side light. The workshop's corduroy is polyester, one of the fabrics from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239). Ask for real-room photos of the exact color.

What are the round pillows on a kids floor sofa for?

They fill the corners of the back wedges, so the sofa looks plump rather than angular, and they give a child one more soft place to lean while reading.

Where should a kids floor sofa go in a nursery?

Beside a basket of picture books, on a thick rug, near a window or lamp that lights it from the side. The books turn the sofa from a seat into the room's reading corner.
