The Cutting Table · a common question

What size floor sofa should I get for my kids' reading nook?

Also asked as:big enough that it's comfy for us to laylarge reading area for my kids

A reading nook is measured by who lies in it. Decide that first. The size follows.

The quick answer

Choose the largest size if you will lie down and read with your child, because kids' floor sofas are child-scaled; the large kids corner sofa is 47 in (119 cm). A 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) couch suits a big bedtime reading area. Any size, corner or bay-window shape can be made to measure, in soft microfiber.

Child-scaled means small for you

The kids' sofas are drawn for children. A child sits in one with room to spare. An adult lying beside that child does not.

So the first question is not the room. Who will lie in it? If you will be on the floor too, choose the largest size offered, the 47 in (119 cm) kids corner. For a large bedtime reading area, a 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) couch gives the space. See kids' floor sofas and play couches and sizes by age.

Before you order for a small reader

  • Decide whether an adult will lie down in the nook too.
  • Measure the floor you will really give it. Leave a hand's width of floor.
  • For a corner or a bay window, send the measurements and a photo of the space.
  • Ask for soft microfiber, the fabric recommended for children.
  • Check what is pictured: decorative pillows on the kids corner are sold separately.

Kids' floor sofas are child-scaled, so a parent who wants to lie down and read beside a child needs the largest size, the 47 in corner.

A nook for a child and a parent is not.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What size should I get so I can lie down and read with my toddler?

    The workshop's answer

The largest size offered. These cushions are designed for children and aren't very large, so for an adult lying down too, the workshop recommends the large kids corner sofa, 47 in (119 cm).

  2. A common question

What size works for a kids' reading area or a playroom floor couch?

    The workshop's answer

The couch in the photo is 28 x 64 in (71 x 163 cm) and fits a large bedtime reading area. Any size can be made, and soft microfiber is recommended for children.

  3. A common question

My reading corner is about 30 in square and I want a 16 in back. What do I order?

    The workshop's answer

You choose one size and get the seat, backrest and two armrests in it: 16 x 32 gives a 16 x 32 in seat and backrest plus two armrests. A 4 x 4 ft cushion was quoted for under a child's bed.

  4. A common question

Can you make a reading cushion for the corner bay window in my daughter's room?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send the measurements and a photo of the space, and the cushion is made to fit.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a kids' floor sofa be made taller or lower?

Yes. For taller, stack an extra base cushion and keep the metal bars on the first cushion, not the floor. For lower, order it with one floor cushion instead of two.

Are the pillows in the photos included?

It depends on the listing. Decorative pillows shown on the kids corner cushion are separate, though matching pillows can be made.

Can I buy only the seat cushion?

Yes. The seat can be ordered alone for less than the full set, and extra backrests or bolsters can be added through a custom order.
