A letter about a taupe ticking window seat cushion and the knit throw at its end
Cotton ticking has a hand you can almost hear, a dry little whisper when you sit. This one I wrote as a letter, because cloth is easier to explain over coffee.
SaveThe quick answer
A cotton ticking window seat cushion feels crisp and dry, wears best indoors, and suits a spot for reading and sitting rather than boots or wet paws. This one is a cream and dark taupe 100% cotton stripe with self piping and a box edge, cut flush to the lid of a painted window seat. Households with pets usually do better with a pet-friendly fabric.

Dear neighbor,
A letter about the striped seat by the window
You asked what a ticking stripe is like to live with, so pull up a chair. The first thing people do at this window seat is run a hand along the stripe. The second is pull that chunky knit throw over their knees.
Cotton ticking has a dry, matte hand. It feels crisp under the palm, a little firm, and it whispers when you sit down. This one is a cream ground with a mid-width dark taupe stripe, 100% cotton, made up as a box cushion with self piping. From across the room the stripe gives the painted seat quiet structure; up close it's just honest cloth.
Everything else in the picture is texture, not pattern. The oatmeal slub linen pillow is the color of the stripe's light tone, so it adds a nubby surface without a second print. The knit throw is draped over the end people actually sit on, which softens the crisp box edge right where knees and elbows land. Soft overcast daylight keeps the corner muted and warm against the dark floorboards.
Pinned by Rosa: where the hands land
Five pins follow the places people touch first: the stripe, the piped edge, the linen pillow and the knit throw.

- self-piped box edge
Piping adds a little to the outer size, so measure the lid exactly and let the workshop allow for it.

How cotton ticking wears, and where it shouldn't go
Here's the part I tell every family. These stripes are indoor cotton. They're for reading, sitting and afternoon naps, not muddy boots, wet swimsuits or a dog coming in from the rain. Keep ticking on the dry side of the house and you're using it the way it was made to be used.
Fit matters as much as fiber. The cushion stops flush with the lid, so the painted panel below stays a clean frame. Piping adds a touch to the outer size, so measure the lid exactly and tell the workshop that's the seat; the allowance is made in the cutting.
For washing, follow how to wash cushion covers. The whole family, from pinstripes that read as texture to bold forest green and periwinkle stripes like those in the gallery, lives under striped cotton and ticking, and more seats like this one under window seat cushions.
Who sits at your window first in the morning? Buy the cloth for that person.
Three straight runs for a U-shaped nook with pets
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop with a U-shaped banquette and pets in the house. They wanted taupe, and they wanted welting. So the workshop didn't send the cotton stripe chart; it sent the pet-friendly chart instead.
The banquette had two side runs of 63 1/2 x 21 1/2 in (161 x 55 cm) and a back run of 93 1/2 x 21 1/2 in (237 x 55 cm), all 2 in (5 cm) thick. The advice was to order each run as its own cushion on the same listing, with piping included as standard. Three straight cushions, one per run, and no awkward corner pieces.
Same color family as the seat in this photo, a different cloth entirely, because the room asked for it. For homes with paws, read pet-friendly cushion fabric.
Buyer questions: a wall-less seat, paint chips and five matching sets
- A common question
My window seat has no wall behind it. Can the bolster be fixed in place so it doesn't roll off?
The workshop's answerThe workshop suggested a non-slip fabric piece under the seat cushion to stop it moving, and it can also make two smaller side bolsters to your own measurements.
- A common question
Could you photograph a fabric next to my paint colors so I can see whether they work together?
The workshop's answerYes. For one buyer the workshop mocked up the two closest options, a warm taupe base with pink flecks and a deeper wine base with pink flecks, against both paint colors, and redid the visuals when one color was misread. Treat them as a guide; colors can shift slightly on screen.
- A common question
I need five matching bench cushion and bolster sets for a busy space. Can you make them, and how long does it take?
The workshop's answerYes. Five sets of 31 1/2 x 78 3/4 in (80 x 200 cm) cushions, 8 in (20 cm) thick, with 11 3/4 in (30 cm) bolsters, in washable pre-shrunk fabric over high-density comfort foam, were quoted at 10 days of production.

A cotton ticking window seat cushion is for reading and sitting, not muddy boots: 100% cotton stripes belong on the dry side of the house.

Questions buyers ask next
Is cotton ticking a good fabric for a window seat cushion?
Yes, for an indoor seat used for reading and sitting. Cotton ticking has a crisp, dry hand and a stripe that gives a painted window seat quiet structure. For mudroom benches, pets or damp spots, choose a performance or pet-friendly fabric instead.
Does piping change the size of a window seat cushion?
Piping adds a little to the outer size. Measure the lid of the window seat exactly and tell the workshop it is the seat size; the allowance for the piping is made in the cutting, so the cushion sits flush with the lid.
What throw pillows go with a striped window seat cushion?
Textured solids in the stripe's light tone. Here an oatmeal slub linen pillow and a chunky cream knit throw add texture without a second pattern, so the stripe stays the only print on the seat.
