A taupe pencil-stripe window seat cushion, and what holds it still

A white box seat over a radiator, in a room where somebody works all day. No ties in sight, and nothing slides.

The quick answer

A window seat cushion on a built-in box seat rarely needs ties: cut it to the full length and depth so the edges have nowhere to go, add a non-slip base if the top is painted and slick, and put the zipper on the back band facing the window. Save ties for chairs, rockers and porch swings.

It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. A quiet stripe for a room with a desk in it

This window seat cushion lives in a home office, and it behaves like a good coworker: present, tidy, never loud.

It runs the full length and depth of a white built-in box seat that stands proud of the window wall. The box edge is square and crisp, the same language as the joinery beneath it. Taupe pencil stripes on cream, from our striped cotton and ticking family, add movement without arguing with the books and papers on the pale oak desk.

Look under the sill and you will find a panel radiator. Warmth from below is why a breathable cotton stripe beats a heavy pile here. The oatmeal linen curtain falls at the end of the seat, not across it, so drawing it at dusk never buries the cushion. Oak shelves bring the color, the wool rug the texture.

Then comes the sliding question. What sits under your cushion, paint or bare wood?

  1. Taupe pencil stripe

Thin stripes add movement without competing with a busy desk nearby.

  2. Box edge gusset

A straight box edge mirrors the crisp lines of the white built-in base.

  3. Radiator below sill

Warmth from below makes a breathable cotton cover a better choice than a heavy pile.

  4. Linen curtain

The curtain falls at the end of the seat, not over it, so the cushion stays usable when drawn.

  5. Oak wall shelves

Oak shelving warms the white corner and shows the seat sits in a working room.

A real project

Two yellow cushions and the extras that got trimmed

A buyer in the US planned a kids' room window nook in caterpillar yellow: two cushions at 27 x 46 x 4 in (69 x 117 x 10 cm), three 27 x 12 in (69 x 30 cm) cylinder pillows, and two tall back supports planned so nothing would block the view.

Making the back supports 12 in (30 cm) thick raised the total a good deal, so the buyer dropped the extras and kept the two seat cushions. The workshop confirmed the fabric resists sun fading but is not waterproof, and agreed to send photos before shipping.

What I love is how it was quoted: piece by piece, so a family could trim the list without losing the seat.

The lesson: Very thick back supports add a lot of cost; quote each piece separately so the order can be trimmed.

Three questions about thickness, tufts and straps

  1. A common question

How thick are your bench cushions, and can I go thinner or thicker?

    The workshop's answer

The standard bench cushion is 4 in (10 cm) thick. Other thicknesses are made to order, from 3 in (7.6 cm) up to 12 in (30 cm) for sofa seat cushions.

  2. A common question

How do I order the tufted (French mattress) style in my own size, and make sure I don't get the flat one?

    The workshop's answer

Order through the tufted (French mattress) listing, pick the size closest to yours, and type your exact measurements and fabric color in the personalization box; the color dropdown may be switched off. If your size is far from every option, message first so the workshop can say which to pick.

  3. A common question

Will my outdoor back cushions slide off the chairs unless they have straps?

    The workshop's answer

Usually not. Back cushions made with double piping have enough structure to stay put without sliding. Straps can still be added for a small extra cost, and for seats the workshop may suggest a non-slip base instead.

A window seat cushion cut to the full length and depth of a built-in box has nowhere to slide. Ties belong on chairs, rockers and porch swings.

Questions buyers ask next

When does a window seat cushion need a non-slip base?

When the top underneath is painted, lacquered or otherwise slick, and the cushion is not held in by walls or a lip. A grip backing across the whole underside then holds it without a single tie.

Which way should the zipper face on a window seat cushion?

Toward the window or the wall, on the back band. From the room the zipper stays out of sight, the front edge stays clean, and nobody's knees catch it when they tuck their feet up on the seat.

Is striped cotton a sensible choice above a radiator?

Yes. A cotton stripe breathes, so warmth rising from a radiator below does not turn the seat stuffy the way a heavy pile can. Keep the cushion on the seat top and leave the radiator's face clear.
