A taupe stripe mattress for a rope-hung swing bed, finished where the ropes pass

Walnut frame, jute ropes, voile curtains backlit at golden hour. Callum looks at the hand-finished corners of a striped swing-bed mattress, and at the one number that nearly got mixed up.

The quick answer

A porch swing cushion for a hanging bed should be a thick, firm box mattress that fills the platform edge to edge and sits just above the frame, so the ropes don't rub the fabric. Measure inside the rope or chain points, mark where they pass, and have the corners shaped or notched around them.

Five pins on a hanging bed, from the striped mattress and its matching pillow to the jute rope at the corner and the voile behind.

  1. Striped swing-bed mattress

A thick box mattress fills the whole platform for lying down.

  2. Matching stripe pillow

Pillows in the same stripe keep a big bed calm.

  3. Jute hanging rope

Ropes pass the mattress corners, so measure inside them or notch the cushion.

  4. Potted Boston fern

One fern adds green without crowding the bed.

  5. Sheer white curtains

Voile softens strong backlight and adds privacy.

Where the ropes meet the mattress

Look at the corners first. Thick jute ropes come down past each corner of the walnut platform, and the mattress has to live with them. Rope that rubs fabric wears a line into it. Here the mattress sits just proud of the frame, so the rope clears the fabric instead of sawing at it.

On any hanging bed, measure inside the rope or chain points, not the outside of the frame. Then mark on your drawing where each rope passes. The corners can be shaped or notched so the porch swing cushion fills the platform edge to edge without fighting the hardware. The notched cushion pattern shows how to measure a cutout, and the glossary defines a notch.

The edge is a box with self piping. On a mattress this size the welt does real work, keeping a straight front line where people climb in. What hangs your swing, rope or chain?

A wide stripe, cut to line up

Taupe and white in a wide stripe keeps a very large piece light. A solid taupe mattress this size would sit in the loggia like a boulder. The stripe also picks up the jute ropes and the jute rug below.

The throw pillows are cut from the same stripe. On a big bed that keeps things calm, and it only works if the stripes run the same way on every piece. Put it in writing when you order. The stripe direction pattern covers matching across pillows.

Sheer voile softens a hard golden-hour backlight and gives some privacy. One potted Boston fern adds green without crowding the bed. The fabric is a water-repellent membrane, sensible for a loggia open on one side. Rain doesn't negotiate, and a swing bed can't be carried indoors in a hurry, so it earns a place among the porch and patio cushions. More hanging-bed ideas live under swing bed cushions.

A real project

Four inches or six? Read it back

A couple wrote to the workshop wanting two deep swing-chair cushions with inserts, pattern M-16, both 59 in (150 cm) long. Their message gave the thickness two ways, once as 4 in (10 cm) and once as 6 in (15 cm).

The workshop did not guess. It read the numbers back and confirmed both cushions at 6 in: one at 59 x 19.75 x 6 in (150 x 50 x 15 cm), the other at 59 x 15.75 x 6 in (150 x 40 x 15 cm).

That is hand-finishing too, the kind done before a single cut. Buyers mix up thickness and width more often than you'd think. Read back every dimension and the foam gets cut once. The pattern on porch swing cushion sizes lists the usual lengths.

Buyer questions: a tall ottoman cover, velvet thickness and a one-sided zipper

  1. A common question

    Can you make a replacement cover for an ottoman cushion that's 25.5 x 25.5 x 12.25 in (65 x 65 x 31 cm)?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A cover that tall falls outside the standard sizes, so it is made as a custom order. Covers up to 6 in (15 cm) high fit within the standard sizes.

  2. A common question

How thick are your velvet seat cushions, and could I get four small ones?

    The workshop's answer

The standard velvet seat cushion is 4 in (10 cm) thick, and the size can be customized. Four seat cushions at 14.5 x 16.5 in (37 x 42 cm) were quoted in any fabric from the charts.

  3. A common question

If my cushion has a zipper, can you put it on one specific side only?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes. Two custom cushions, 21 x 23 in and 21 x 27 in (53 x 58 and 53 x 69 cm), were made with the zipper on the 21 in side only.

Measure a swing bed inside the ropes, not outside the frame, and mark where each rope passes so the mattress corners can be notched around them.

Questions buyers ask next

How firm should the mattress on a hanging swing bed be?

Firm. A swing bed moves, and people climb in from one side, so a soft mattress sags at the edge. A thick, firm box mattress that fills the platform edge to edge stays put and keeps its line.

Should a swing bed mattress sit above the frame or level with it?

Just above. A mattress that sits slightly proud of the frame keeps the fabric clear of ropes and rails that would otherwise rub a worn line into it. Take the footprint from inside the frame.

Why choose a wide stripe for a large rope-hung bed?

A wide stripe keeps a very large surface from looking heavy. Taupe and white also repeat jute ropes and rugs. Cut matching pillows from the same stripe, running the same direction, so the bed reads as one piece.
