A taupe-striped porch swing cushion for a rope daybed, finished as one piece

A swing bed on a curtained loggia, hung on hemp rope. The mattress looks like one continuous piece of cloth. It is not. The stripes were cut to carry over every seam.

The quick answer

A porch swing cushion for a hanging daybed is really a mattress: measure the platform inside the ropes and order it slightly smaller so it swings without rubbing. Standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm), with 6 in (15 cm) or 8 in (20 cm) on request, and a stripe carried down the side band makes it read as one piece.

The stripe runs across the top and down the side band.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: 4 in (10 cm) as standard; 6 in (15 cm) or 8 in (20 cm) for a swing that should feel like a bed.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Outdoor stripe cover3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core4 in10 cm51¼ in deep · 130 cm

Reading the loggia

A swing bed hangs from dark timber beams on thick hemp ropes. Sheer white curtains filter the afternoon sun. Ferns in terracotta pots, a jute rug below. On the platform, a taupe and white striped mattress deep enough to look like a bed, not a bench.

That depth is the first decision. A porch swing cushion on a bench swing can be slim. On a swing bed people lie down, so the cushion sits proud of the timber, and the ropes run clear of the cloth because it was sized to the platform inside them. How deep is your platform, rope to rope?

The stripe is the second. It runs across the bed and carries straight down the side band, so the eye reads one continuous piece. That only happens when the band is cut to line up with the top, stripe to stripe, at every seam. It takes more fabric and a lot more patience. The self piping, in the same stripe, keeps the seam line from breaking the rhythm. The stripe direction pattern explains the choices.

The square pillow and the lumbar repeat the fabric, which keeps the bed calm and hotel-quiet. Hemp rope, walnut-toned beams, ferns and jute warm up a cool gray stripe. Weather will find this bed, friend. The water-repellent fabric is there for that.

Where the finishing is, and the rope that frames it.

  1. Striped swing mattress

The mattress is made to the platform size inside the ropes, so they run clear of the fabric.

  2. Stripes wrap the side

Stripes continue down the boxing, so the thick mattress looks like one continuous piece.

  3. Matching striped pillows

A square and a lumbar in the same stripe keep the bed calm and hotel-like.

  4. Natural hemp rope

Rope and walnut-toned wood warm up the cool gray stripe.

  5. Jute rug underneath

A jute rug under the swing grounds it and matches the rope texture.

Finishing a swing mattress, in order

  1. Measure inside the ropes

Take the platform size between the ropes and ask for the cushion a little smaller, so it swings without rubbing.

  2. Pick a thickness tier

4 in (10 cm) is standard. 6 in (15 cm) and 8 in (20 cm) feel more like a bed and cost more, since the piece is oversized.

  3. Carry the stripe down

Ask for the stripe to continue down the side band, matched at every seam.

  4. Plan for winter

Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything.

A real project

Four inches or eight

A buyer messaged the workshop needing a one-piece cushion with a backrest for a wooden outdoor swing, 51 × 82 in (130 × 208 cm), and asked whether it would be thick enough.

Standard is 4 in (10 cm). The workshop offered 6 in (15 cm) or 8 in (20 cm) and quoted the 4 in and the 8 in versions side by side, so the difference was plain.

The buyer found a cheaper local option in the end, and the workshop explained why its quote ran higher: a piece that size is oversized, and oversized cushions cost more to make.

Sizes
51 × 82 in (130 × 208 cm); 4, 6 or 8 in (10, 15 or 20 cm) thick

The lesson: Outdoor swing beds are oversized; quote thickness tiers side by side.

Buyer questions: ottomans and returns

  1. A common question

I bought the corner floor sofa second-hand. Can I buy just the matching ottoman?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The 39 × 39 in (99 × 99 cm) ottoman is sold on its own through a separate link, including to people who bought the sofa second-hand.

  2. A common question

My custom dining cushion turned out too tall for the room. Can I send it back?

    The workshop's answer

Custom cushions are made to the size ordered, so a change-of-mind return is at your cost, return shipping included. The full refund follows once it arrives back. Send the return tracking number as text so it can be followed.

  3. A common question

Is there a way to order only the ottoman, in the same color as my sofa?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Choose the ottoman-only option for that sofa and pick the same color. A separate ottoman table piece has been made on request too.

Measure a swing bed mattress inside the ropes and have it cut a little smaller than the platform, so it swings without rubbing on the rope.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a swing bed cushion be?

4 in (10 cm) is standard and works for sitting. For lying down, 6 in (15 cm) or 8 in (20 cm) feels more like a mattress; expect a higher quote, since the piece is oversized.

Why carry the stripes down the side band?

A stripe that stops at the top seam makes a thick mattress look like a lid on a box. Carried down the band, it reads as one piece, and the swing bed looks finished.

Can a swing bed cushion stay outside all year?

Water-repellent, UV-resistant outdoor fabric handles sun and showers, and a covered porch or loggia helps it last. Store it indoors and dry through the winter.
