A taupe awning-stripe corner floor cushion, and the foam that holds its curve
Harlan reads a quarter-round floor seat under a round black mirror and talks about what sits inside the stripes: how deep, how firm, and the honest list of pieces.

The quick answer
A corner floor cushion that serves as a daily bedroom seat should be thicker than the standard 4 in (10 cm): for a floor sofa base the workshop recommended 8 in (20 cm), and a 48 x 48 in corner cushion has been quoted at 10 in (25 cm). The depth lifts you off a cold floor, and backrests about 16 in (41 cm) tall carry the back.
Swatch strip: taupe, ivory and a walnut chest
- Awning taupe#A8998AThe wide stripe; a warm gray-brown that stays calm beside wood.
- Ivory welt#F2EDE3The cord that draws the curve along the top edge.
- Walnut#6B4A33The chest of drawers, and the warmest thing in the room.
- Mirror black#1E1E1EThe round frame that echoes the seat's curved front.
- Shag cream#EDE6D8The rug that puts something soft under bare feet.
- Slate tile#3A3836The cold floor the foam has to lift you off.
Why the stripes stand up and what keeps them straight
My friend,
Stripes tell the truth about a cushion faster than any plain cloth. If the foam underneath is short or soft, a stripe bends and wanders. On this taupe corner floor cushion the stripes stand straight up the side of the seat, and that tells me the block inside is doing its job.
Look at the proportion first. The seat is a quarter-round tucked into a bedroom corner, low to a dark tile floor. The stripes run vertically on the seat side and on both flanged backrest pillows, and the eye reads that as height. A low seat that looks taller is a good trick in a small room.
Then the welt. An ivory cord runs along the top edge and draws the curve like a pencil line against the taupe. Wherever a welt goes, the eye follows, so it has to ride on a firm shoulder. A welt on tired foam droops at the front, and a drooping welt is the first sign of a cushion bought in a hurry.
The color is quiet on purpose. Taupe and white is about the calmest stripe there is, and in soft daylight it lets the walnut chest of drawers be the warm thing in the room. The round black mirror above repeats the seat's curved front. The shaggy cream rug is there for bare feet, because tile is cold at seven in the morning.
Now, what is inside. Floor cushions come 4 in (10 cm) thick as standard. For a seat you use every day, I would go deeper. When a buyer asked the workshop for a compact floor sofa, the workshop recommended 8 in (20 cm) over the standard 4 in, and we have quoted a corner cushion as thick as 10 in (25 cm). Depth keeps your hips off the tile and gives the welt a square edge to sit on. Buy the cushion once, cry once.
Before you settle on a number, read the floor cushion thickness pattern and try the foam firmness finder. The shapes live in the corner floor cushion atlas, the cloth on the striped cotton and ticking shelf, and the radius math in the quarter-circle sizing pattern. Who in your house will sit in that corner most?

A 40 in floor sofa in 5 pieces, and one honest list
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop wanting a floor sofa exactly 40 in (102 cm) wide. The set was five pieces: a 20 x 40 in (51 x 102 cm) base, two backrests 40 in long and two bolsters.
The workshop recommended 8 in (20 cm) of thickness over the standard 4 in, and gave the backrest height as 16 in (41 cm). Then came the mix-ups, which set, which backrests, how many of each. It took several rounds of messages before the order was written out piece by piece, in a pale water green.
The lesson I pass to every apprentice: list each piece with its width, depth and height on its own line, and nobody can quote you wrong.

Buyer questions: wooden bases, deep corners and a showroom
- A common question
Could the floor sofa sit on a wooden base instead of the metal bars?
The workshop's answerNot at the moment. The workshop has no wooden frames for the floor sofa and does not expect to offer them soon.
- A common question
Can the largest corner floor cushion, 48 x 48 in, be made 10 in thick?
The workshop's answerYes. A tufted 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) corner floor cushion was quoted at 10 in (25 cm) thick, and the workshop asked what the extra thickness was needed for before going ahead.
- A common question
Is there a showroom where I can sit on one before I order?
The workshop's answerNot yet. There is no physical showroom. Orders are delivered to your door, with timing confirmed when you order, and the workshop points buyers to its reviews and real-life photos.
A corner floor cushion sat on every day wants 8 in of foam, not the standard 4 in; the extra depth keeps the welt riding on a square edge.

Questions buyers ask next
How thick should a corner floor cushion be for an adult who sits on it daily?
Thicker than the 4 in (10 cm) standard. For a floor sofa base the workshop recommended 8 in (20 cm), which lifts the hips clear of the floor and keeps a square edge under the welt so the front does not droop.
Why do vertical stripes make a floor seat look taller?
The eye travels along a stripe. When the stripes run up the side of the seat and up the backrest pillows, a low seat reads taller than it measures, which helps in a bedroom corner where a floor cushion can look sunken.
What should I write down when ordering a floor sofa set?
Every piece on its own line with width, depth and height: the base, each backrest, each bolster. A five-piece 40 in (102 cm) set went back and forth for several messages until it was itemized exactly that way.
Does a taupe stripe go with walnut furniture?
Yes. Taupe and white is a neutral stripe that sits calmly beside warm walnut and dark tile. The wood carries the warmth, the stripe adds a quiet rhythm, and a contrast ivory welt keeps the seat's outline readable.
Sit well. — Harlan
