A taupe hexagon window seat cushion, and how honeycomb jacquard feels under a morning coffee

I run my hand across a fabric before I read anything else in a photo. This taupe honeycomb told me plenty, and so did the latte sitting on it.

Seat and pillows cut from one taupe honeycomb jacquard make a white window recess feel fully upholstered.

The quick answer

A jacquard window seat cushion suits a reading nook because the pattern is woven into the cloth, not printed on it, so the honeycomb keeps its texture as the seat gets used. Cut seat and pillows from one jacquard, fit the cushion wall to wall in the recess, and choose a zippered cover so it can come off for cleaning.

What a woven honeycomb feels like under your palm

Run your palm across this seat and you would feel the pattern before you saw it. The taupe and cream hexagons are woven in, which is what jacquard means: the honeycomb is built from the threads themselves, raised in some places and flat in others. Nothing is printed on top, so nothing can rub off at the front edge where knees and heels land.

That gives the cloth a firm, slightly dry hand. It is not plush like velvet and not nubby like bouclé. It feels like a good tablecloth that decided to become upholstery, and it keeps its shape on a box edge.

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, so I always ask how a cloth will meet a sneaker. A flat, tight weave has fewer loops to catch than a nubby one, and a small repeating pattern like this forgives a crumb or a coffee drip until you get to it. More weaves like it sit on the jacquard and damask shelf.

Pinned by Rosa: the nook, cup by cup

Begin at the latte resting on the seat, then follow the pins to the matching pillows and the one small succulent on the oak sill.

  1. Taupe hexagon seat

The seat runs wall to wall in the recess, so no gaps show at either end.

  2. Matching piped pillows

Pillows cut from the same jacquard make the recess feel fully upholstered.

  3. Latte cup

A cup resting on the seat shows it is firm and level.

  4. Succulent on oak sill

A tiny plant on warm oak is the only green in a neutral nook.

One cloth for seat and pillows, fitted wall to wall

Now step back from the fabric. This seat runs tight from one side of the recess to the other, so no gap shows at either end and the white reveal frames it like a picture mat. That is the whole trick of a window seat cushion in a recess. Measure the width at the back wall and again at the front edge, because plastered walls are rarely parallel.

The two throw pillows are cut from the same jacquard and piped like the seat. Matching them makes the nook read as one upholstered piece instead of a cushion plus accessories. Fresh morning sun comes through the linen roller blind, and the taupe stays warm rather than muddy against all that white.

The props are small on purpose. A latte sits right on the seat and stays level, which tells you the cushion is firm. An open magazine and a succulent on the oak sill add life without covering the pattern. The reading nook cushion collection has more corners like this. Where would your cup go in your own window?

A real project

A 106-inch ledge over a radiator, cut in two

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a front bay window with a ledge 106 x 15 in (269 x 38 cm) sitting right above a radiator. One long cushion would have covered the whole heater.

The workshop advised two cushions instead, each 53 x 15 in (135 x 38 cm). Split that way, heat can still escape and either half lifts out on its own. The buyer took their time choosing a color from the chart, which I always encourage, neighbor. A color you see every morning deserves a slow decision. The one piece or two pattern walks through the same choice.

Buyer questions: piping colors, a little extra length, a fair price

  1. A common question

Can the piping be a different color from the cushion, and which colors can I pick?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Contrast piping comes from the same color range as the fabrics. Pairings already made include L-04 with L-16, L-02 with L-53, green corduroy COR-207 with cream COR-201, stripe n33 with 110 brown, and linen with velvet piping.

  2. A common question

I need a size a little bigger than the listed option. Will that cost more?

    The workshop's answer

Small tweaks are often made at the listed price if you write the exact size in the order note, such as 18 x 42 in on the 18 x 40 option, or 28 x 50 in through the 28 x 48 option. Bigger jumps in length carry a surcharge.

  3. A common question

The quote came in higher than I expected. Is there any room on price?

    The workshop's answer

Listing prices are already discounted, but custom quotes are often lowered for a first purchase, for bulk orders, or when you share your budget up front. Saying what you hoped to spend is the quickest way to a workable number.

Jacquard wears well on a window seat because the honeycomb is woven into the cloth, not printed on top, so the front edge keeps its pattern.

Questions buyers ask next

Is jacquard a good fabric for a window seat that gets daily use?

For indoor seats, yes. Jacquard's pattern is woven into the cloth rather than printed, so the design holds up where knees and heels rub. Its firm, flat hand suits a seat that doubles as a coffee spot or reading perch.

Should throw pillows match the window seat cushion?

Pillows cut from the same fabric and piped like the seat make a recess read as one upholstered piece. Mixed pillows work too, but in a small nook one cloth throughout looks calmer and more built-in.

How do I measure a window recess for a wall-to-wall cushion?

Measure the width at the back wall and again at the front edge, plus the depth at both ends. Plastered recesses are rarely square, so send all four numbers with a quick sketch of the shape.

What if my window seat sits over a radiator?

Split the cushion. A 106 in (269 cm) ledge over a radiator was made as two 53 in (135 cm) cushions, so heat can escape at the join and each half lifts out on its own.
