A Reading by CallumDining Chair Cushions & Pads
Taupe herringbone chair cushions on a director's chair, and where the money lasts longest
Callum writes a letter from a hillside terrace at sunset, about two back panels, one loose seat pad, and the cheapest way to make outdoor cushions outlive the summer.
SaveThe quick answer
For a folding director's chair, spend on outdoor-rated fabric and save on fixings: hang the back panels over the top rail and let the seat pad rest loose, so nothing stops the chair folding. Small pads carry a price floor set largely by shipping, so order the whole set of chairs at once, where several pieces can earn a small discount.

Friend,
A letter from a stone terrace at sunset
I'm writing about a chair that knows when to quit. A wooden director's chair on a weathered deck, an old stone wall behind it, and hills going gold at sunset with dark cypresses standing in rows. The kind of evening you want to last. Cushions make it last longer.
You might expect a chair cushion with ties here. There are none, and that's the smart part. The back is two panels hung from the top of the frame. The seat is a slim pad resting on the canvas. Nothing is fixed to the cross legs, so the chair still folds, and both pieces come off in seconds when the weather turns. It's the simplest kind of chair cushion there is.
The fabric is a taupe and chocolate herringbone outdoor acrylic, self-piped. It matches the stone and the old boards so closely that texture does the talking, not color. One pot of lavender in terracotta is the only cool note on the whole terrace, and it's enough.
Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Outdoor acrylic sheds a passing shower. It doesn't turn a cushion into a boat. When rain settles in for the night, the pads come inside, and in the fall they go into dry storage. The winter storage Pattern has the details.
Pinned by Callum: five marks on the terrace
Five pins run from the split back panels down the folding frame to the lavender and the hills that set the palette.

- Split back panels
The back is made as two panels that hang from the top of the frame.
- Seat pad
A slim quilted seat pad sits on the chair without stopping it from folding.
- Folding frame
Nothing is fixed to the cross legs, so the chair can still be closed and stored.
- Lavender pot
A single pot of lavender adds the only cool color.
- Hill view
The warm hills and stone match the herringbone almost exactly.

Where the money lasts, and where it doesn't need to go
- Spend on the fabric. Outdoor-rated cloth is what survives sun and evening damp.
- Save on fixings. Hang-over back panels and a loose seat pad need no ties or hardware on a folding frame.
- Spend a little on samples. Taupe, oatmeal and chocolate shift in low evening light, so judge them outdoors.
- Save by ordering the set. One small pad carries a price floor; several pieces can earn a small discount.
- Spend five minutes at dusk. Pads carried in dry outlast pads left out wet.
Not a chair, not outdoors, and the same lesson
A buyer in the US turned IKEA Kallax shelving into a kids' room bench: two long units and one smaller 4-cube unit, three cushions in all.
Before anything else, the shop confirmed the Kallax top. The cushions were set at 15⅜ in (39 cm) deep, which sits flush on the cabinet: two at 57⅝ in (146.5 cm) long for the long units, one at 30⅛ in (76.5 cm) for the short one. The blue was identified as parliament. The order went through the IKEA Kallax option already on the window-seat listing.
Why tell it in a letter about a terrace chair? Because the money was saved in the first message. Confirm the thing the cushion sits on, use a size the listing already knows, and nothing gets cut twice. The Kallax cushion sizes are worth a look if you own the shelves.
How many chairs are you dressing this summer, one or four?
Buyer questions: curves, small squares, and the price floor
- A common question
Can a seat cushion be rounded at the back or curved along the front?
The workshop's answerYes. Send the straight length of each side edge up to where the curve begins, plus the depth or radius of the curve, ideally on a sketch. If the old cushions are gone, the production team and craftsmen can work the sizes out from the seat itself.
- A common question
Do you make small seat cushions, around 13¾ in (35 cm) square?
The workshop's answerYes. Very small sizes don't have their own prices in the system, so pick the size closest to yours and write the exact size and fabric in the personalization box. Shipping costs are the reason small cushions can't be priced much lower.
- A common question
Why does one small seat cushion still cost a fair amount, and is there a discount?
The workshop's answerMost of the price of a small cushion is shipping, so even tiny sizes carry a certain cost. For one or two cushions the listed price is the best there is. Several pieces can earn a small discount, and multi-piece design projects can be priced better.

A director's chair cushion should come off in seconds. Hang the two back panels over the top rail, let the seat pad rest loose, and the chair still folds flat.

Questions buyers ask next
Will cushions stop a director's chair from folding?
Not if nothing is fixed to the cross legs. Hang the back panels over the top of the frame and let the seat pad rest on the canvas. Both lift off in seconds, and the chair folds as it always did.
Is outdoor acrylic fabric waterproof?
No. Outdoor acrylic is water-repellent: it sheds a shower and dries, but a soaking rain gets through to the filling. Bring pads in for wet nights, and store them dry and indoors over the winter.
How do I measure a seat pad for a folding chair?
Measure the canvas seat edge to edge at the front and at the back, then front to back through the middle. For a rounded or curved seat, add the straight side length before the curve and the depth of the curve.
What colors suit a terrace with stone and weathered wood?
Colors taken from the stone and the boards, such as taupe, oatmeal and chocolate. Let a texture like herringbone do the work, and add a single cool note, such as lavender in a pot, so the warm palette doesn't turn flat.
