A rose-stripe corner floor cushion, and where the money belongs

Fifty-some years of floor seating taught me one thing about money. Spend it on what you sit on and what you wash. Save it everywhere else.

The quick answer

On a corner floor cushion, spend on the parts you sit on and wash: a fabric that suits your household, removable covers and a swatch in hand before any big order. Save on the setting. Here two plain oak stools make a rose striped pouf read like a sofa with end tables, and an ivory welt keeps the bold stripe tidy.

Pinned by Harlan: the welt, the stripe and the stools

Five pins, from the ivory welt on the seat to the oak stool holding a mug at the right.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Reading the plate: a floor seat dressed as a sofa

My friend, the old men in the trade judged a seat by what stood beside it. Look at this one that way.

It is a box-edged corner floor cushion in rose pink and white striped cotton, with two striped backrest pillows and an ivory welt. The rose keeps the stripe's scale bold while the color stays gentle. The pale welt tidies the line where top and side meet. On a bold stripe, the edge is where the eye goes looking for mistakes, and the welt gives it none to find.

Now the neighbors. Two identical oak stools stand either side, one holding a black vase of dried branches and ceramic bowls, the other a stoneware mug. They give the pouf the symmetry of a sofa with end tables, and that is the fastest way to make a floor cushion read as furniture rather than a bean bag. The rattan cane screen behind adds woven warmth that picks up the cream stripes and the rug. The black vase is the one dark object on the left, and it keeps the soft palette from floating off.

The gallery shows where the stripe came from: cards of stripes, ginghams and awning stripes, thirty-seven striped cottons on one chart alone. The whole family is in striped cotton and ticking, and more shapes in corner floor cushions.

A real project

Twelve seats, three modules and a texture that wasn't right

A buyer in the US wanted a floor sofa that had been discontinued, built as a large U with two corner seats: twelve places in a living room of about 180 x 180 in (457 x 457 cm). The workshop explained its modules. A is a 35 3/8 x 35 3/8 in (90 x 90 cm) corner, B is 47 1/4 x 35 3/8 in (120 x 90 cm) and C is 23 5/8 x 35 3/8 in (60 x 90 cm). It planned the layout from her paper drawing and quoted the whole U.

The cushions came vacuum-sealed and flat, and the shop explained they take 36 to 48 hours to recover. Then the real trouble: the boucle was not the texture she had pictured. The workshop sent new fabric samples and remade the covers in the one she chose.

Buy the cushion once, cry once. On a twelve-seat order, the cheapest thing in the whole project is the swatch; see fabric swatches before ordering.

Buyer questions: a toddler, a smell and a smaller sofa

  1. A common question

We have a toddler. Is there a waterproof fabric for the seating?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. B19 is the water-repellent option and a good main pick with a toddler, and any product can be made in any of the workshop's fabrics.

  2. A common question

Our new floor couch has a strong smell. What are our options?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop explained that its fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239) and recommended washing the covers. It also offered a replacement cover in another color at a reduced price.

  3. A common question

Can the modular corduroy floor sofa be made smaller, say 59 or 63 in (150 or 160 cm) long?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Place the order and write the sizes you need in the order notes. One buyer asked for a 63 x 39 3/8 in (160 x 100 cm) version, and the customization fee was waived on that quote.

Questions buyers ask next

How do I make a floor cushion look like real furniture?

Give it neighbors. Here two identical oak stools flank the pouf like end tables beside a sofa, and a cane screen behind frames the corner. Symmetry does more for a floor seat than extra pillows do.

Why an ivory welt on a rose stripe?

The pale welt tidies the line where top and side meet. On a bold stripe a matching welt can make the edge look busy; ivory draws one clean line and picks up the white in the stripe.

How long does a vacuum-packed floor cushion take to recover?

In the project retold here, the workshop told the buyer 36 to 48 hours. Unpack the cushions, give them room, and judge their shape after that window rather than on the first evening.

Sit well. — Harlan
