A Reading by MaggieBanquette & Kitchen Nook Cushions
A pale sage banquette cushion set split in two along a kitchen peninsula
Maggie opens her notebook at a kitchen peninsula and asks the only question that matters for a family bench: what will it look like after a few years of breakfasts?
SaveThe quick answer
A long banquette cushion ages better in two pieces than one, especially on benches longer than about 59 in (150 cm). Two shorter seat pads can trade places so wear spreads evenly, and each lifts out alone for a spill. This pale sage linen-look set uses two seats, two backs and ivory piping to mark each place.
Notebook, page one: the bench as it stands today
Right, then. A white banquette runs along the kitchen peninsula, backed by a forest green wall, and on it sits a banquette cushion set in pale sage linen-look: two seat pads, two back pads, box edges, ivory piping.
Pale sage is the diplomat here. It sits halfway between the dark green wall and the white bench, so neither looks stuck on. The ivory piping picks up the white of the bench and the subway tile, and it marks each place: two seats, two sitters, no squabbling over the middle.
The backs sit on the seat line and meet with no visible gap. That is where two-piece sets usually go wrong, and I have sewn a few that gapped, dear, back when I trusted an old cushion instead of the bench. Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have.
The props keep the dining end relaxed: a round oak table, backless stools that slide in and out, a fiddle-leaf fig, a brass-capped glass pendant. The black open shelf of glassware is the only dark note above the pale bench.
Now the honest part. Ivory piping in a kitchen will be the first thing to show a jammy thumb, and pale sage will tell you exactly where the dog likes to nap. That is no reason to skip them. It is a reason to order two pieces and a cover that zips off. How many people really sit on your bench on an ordinary Tuesday?

The daily-life test, ticked off
- Kids: one cover can come off for washing while the other pad stays in service.
- Spills: a pad lifts out alone, so juice at one end never means wrestling a 92 in cushion.
- Wear: equal pads can swap ends, so the favorite seat does not wear out alone.
- Pets: pale sage shows where the dog sleeps; choose it with open eyes or pick a deeper sage.
- Sun: if the bench catches direct sun, swap the pads now and then so any fading stays even.
Pinned by Maggie along the peninsula
Five pins, from the two back pads that meet without a gap to the black shelf that holds the only dark note.

- First back pad
Splitting the back into two pads makes each easier to handle and marks two places.
- Second back pad
Both back pads sit on the seat line and meet without a visible gap.
- Two seat pads
Two shorter seat cushions wear more evenly on a long bench than one long piece.
- Round oak table
A round table with backless stools keeps the dining end casual and easy to move around.
- Open shelf
Glassware and bowls on the black shelf add the only dark accent above the pale bench.

One seat, two backs, and a note with every number
A buyer messaged the workshop about a kitchen bench that needed one seat cushion and two backrests, all in linen code L-23, 3 in (7.5 cm) thick. The sizes did not sit neatly on the listing menu, so the workshop suggested buying two stock options of 23 5/8 x 47 1/4 in (60 x 120 cm) to cover the price, then making one seat of 24 3/4 x 48 7/8 in (63 x 124 cm) and two backrests of 15 3/4 x 24 3/8 in (40 x 62 cm), with every size written in the order note.
The buyer paid for only one cushion at first, so the workshop sent a link for the balance before cutting a thing. Buy stock sizes that cover the price, then write every piece and dimension in the note. More sets like this sit among our banquette cushions, and the split question has its own page: one piece or two.
- Sizes
- seat 24 3/4 x 48 7/8 in (63 x 124 cm); backrests 2 x 15 3/4 x 24 3/8 in (40 x 62 cm); 3 in (7.5 cm) thick
The lesson: Buy stock sizes that cover the price, then write every piece and dimension in the order note.
Buyer questions: 92 inches, soft backs, odd sizes
- A common question
Can you make a single cushion 92 inches long?
The workshop's answerYes, but at 92 in (234 cm) the shop suggests two equal pieces of 46 in (117 cm). Two pieces are easier to handle, ship and fit.
- A common question
Are the back cushions filled with the same foam as the seat?
The workshop's answerNo. Back pillows are filled with shredded foam rather than the solid foam used in seat cushions, so they are softer to lean against. The shop confirms this with you before production.
- A common question
What would a 29.5 x 37.5 inch velvet cushion cost?
The workshop's answerChoose the nearest size options on the listing and the exact price appears. Then write your true dimensions, 29 1/2 x 37 1/2 in (75 x 95 cm), in personalization.
On a kitchen bench longer than 59 in (150 cm), two equal seat pads wear more evenly than one long cushion and lift out alone for a spill.

Questions buyers ask next
Where should a two-piece banquette seat split?
Usually in the middle, into equal lengths, so the pads can trade places. On this peninsula the split also lines up with the two back pads, so each sitter gets one seat and one back.
Does ivory piping make sense on a family kitchen bench?
Yes, if you accept that it shows marks first. It lifts a pale sage cushion off a white bench and marks each place. With a cover that zips off, cleaning becomes a cover job, not a cushion job.
Why choose pale sage against a dark green kitchen wall?
It is a middle shade. Sage sits between forest green and white, so it links the wall to the bench instead of competing with either. A darker green would merge with the wall, and plain white would vanish into the bench.
