An olive corner floor cushion with mustard backrests, read seam by seam

Buyers ask me about corner seats in plain words, and most of their questions come back to the small work you only notice when it is done badly. Let us start with theirs.

An olive seat with mustard pillows catches afternoon sun next to a walnut sideboard and a grid of black-framed photographs.

The quick answer

A corner floor cushion looks hand-finished when its piping runs straight around the seat, its corners are filled out square and its backrest pillows keep a crisp flange. This olive linen-look seat with mustard backrests shows all three, and a corner floor cushion can be made with or without button tufting. Curved seats start from a traced paper outline.

Before the reading: three questions

  1. A common question

Could the quarter-round tufted corner floor cushion be made without the buttons?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The corner floor cushion can be made plain, with no button tufting.

  2. A common question

Can I order now and have you ship it later, once I'm back home?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Place the order now, tell the workshop the date, and it will ship after that date.

  3. A common question

Does the corduroy pouf chair come with its ottoman?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The chair and the ottoman come together as a set.

Now, the reading

What my thumb looks for first

Sunlight comes in low from the left and rakes across the seat. That is the most honest light a tailor can ask for. It shows every ridge of the linen-look weave, and it shows the piping line around the olive seat. That line runs straight. When a welt wanders, low sun finds it first. A seam is a promise, and this one is kept.

Now the colors. Mustard usually plays the small part beside green. Here the pairing is flipped: the mustard backrests sit at eye level and glow, while olive takes the wear below. Olive is a practical seat color, and it sits kindly with walnut. The mustard pillows are flanged, and that flat border keeps their corners sharp where the two lean together.

Look at the room, too. A tight grid of black-framed photographs gives structure above all that softness, and the black dome lamp answers the frames from across the corner. The walnut sideboard top lines up near the pillow height, so it serves as a side table and the wall reads as one level line. You get a built-in look with no carpenter. More of the family lives under corner floor cushions, sizing is in quarter-circle corner sizes, and the cloth is on the linen-look fabrics shelf.

Tell me, my friend, what sits at the height of your pillows right now?

Four finishing checks for a corner seat

  • Sight down the piping in low light. It should run straight from corner to corner.
  • Press each corner. It should be filled out square, not soft and hollow.
  • Run a finger along a pillow flange. The flat border should be even all the way around.
  • Check the weave on the top panel. The lines should run square to the front edge.
A real project

The hearth that curved

A buyer wrote in with a fireplace hearth that curved. No stock size would ever fit it. The workshop asked for the shape and the sizes drawn on paper, the real outline traced from the hearth itself, and quoted the curved piece from that drawing.

I have cut a good many curves since I was a boy sweeping floors in High Point. They never frighten a tailor. What frightens a tailor is a guess. Trace the real outline and a curve is only a longer seam. The method is in paper templates for custom cushions, and more hearth seats live in fireplace hearth cushions.

Low afternoon sun is the honest test for a floor cushion: if the piping runs straight in raking light from corner to corner, the seam was sewn with care.

Questions buyers ask next

Why do flanged backrest pillows keep sharper corners?

A flange is a flat fabric border sewn around the pillow's edge. It keeps the corners crisp where two pillows lean together, and it adds a tailored line without bringing in a second color.

Why pair olive with mustard on a floor seat?

Olive is a practical, forgiving seat color that sits well with walnut and other warm woods. Mustard above it is lighter, so it catches the light at eye level and warms the wall behind.

How do I order a floor cushion for a curved space?

Trace the real outline on paper, mark the sizes, and send a photo of the drawing. The workshop quotes curved pieces from that tracing, so an accurate outline matters more than neat handwriting.
