A navy trapezoid window seat cushion, put through a family's daily life

Kids climb it, the cat claims it, the sun finds it every afternoon. A navy bay seat with ivory piping, tested by daily life.

The quick answer

A navy trapezoid window seat cushion is a forgiving choice for a family reading bay: the dark linen-look weave hides everyday marks, and ivory piping keeps it from sinking between dark shelves. Expect the pale piping to show wear first. Because a trapezoid can't be turned end for end, manage sun with the curtain.

Five pins in the library bay

Reading the bay

A home library, a bay window, walnut bookshelves on both sides, herringbone oak underfoot. Cool daylight, quiet as a Sunday. In the bay, a navy trapezoid cushion with ivory piping and one matching lumbar pillow.

Navy belongs between walnut shelves: dark enough to sit with the leather spines, while the ivory piping keeps the seat from sinking into the shelving. The angled ends follow the bay, so no gap waits to swallow a bookmark.

The props are few. One open hardback says what the seat is for. One lumbar pillow in the seat fabric, piped the same way, leans where the angled side meets the back, right where your back lands. White paneling, a pale floor and a cream rug keep the corner light. Copy that one-pillow trick, neighbor.

The daily-life test, line by line

  • Kids: navy forgives small hands better than a pale seat, though the ivory piping will show a mark first.
  • Pets: the corner by the lumbar pillow is where a cat will settle. A pillow is easier to wash than a seat, so let it take the fur.
  • Spills: a dark weave hides a tea ring better than oatmeal does, but blot at once rather than rub.
  • Sun: a bay takes light from more than one side, and a trapezoid can't be turned end for end like a rectangle. Draw the curtain on the brightest afternoons.
A real project

Two benches, a quarter inch, and samples first

A buyer in the US wanted two window bench cushions in oatmeal linen: 17.75 x 59 x 3 in (45 x 150 x 8 cm) and 17.75 x 35 x 3 in (45 x 89 x 8 cm), and asked for a formal quote before ordering samples.

The workshop matched them to its 18 x 59 in and 18 x 36 in options, a quarter inch deeper and, on the short one, an inch longer, and pointed to the fabric sample option on the same listing.

Rounding up to a standard size can save a custom charge. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, but the tape measure comes first: a quarter inch is nothing on a porch bench and everything between two walls.

Rounding a 17.75 in window seat up to an 18 in standard size can save a custom charge, but only if that extra quarter inch still fits between the walls.

Buyer questions: long nooks, odd shapes, L-shapes

  1. A common question

My nook is almost 200 inches long. Can the cushion be one piece?

    The workshop's answer

Very long cushions are made in pieces. A 32.5 x 197 in nook cushion in beige velvet with black piping was made in 3 pieces, and a 100 in (254 cm) back cushion could be split in two.

  2. A common question

Can you quote one rectangular cushion and one odd-shaped trapezoid cushion in houndstooth?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, both were quoted, made with the workshop's best fabric and foam, with about 10 days of processing. For the odd shape, the workshop asked for every side length and a photo of the space.

  3. A common question

Can you quote an L-shaped outdoor couch set, 84 x 84 inches and 28 inches deep, with and without back cushions?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. At the standard 4 in height, the two seat cushions forming the L were quoted first, then the set again with back cushions added, so the two could be compared.

Questions buyers ask next

Is navy a practical window seat color with kids and pets?

Navy hides everyday marks better than pale linen-look shades, so it forgives a family reading seat. Ivory contrast piping shows marks first; spot clean the front edge before anything else.

Why add a lumbar pillow to a window seat?

A window seat has no built-in back. One lumbar pillow in the seat fabric, leaned into the corner where the angled side meets the back wall, gives support for reading without crowding the seat.

Is it worth rounding window seat measurements to a standard size?

It can save a custom charge when the nearest standard size is a fraction away. Two cushions 17.75 in deep were matched to 18 in options, a quarter inch more. Between two walls, check that extra fraction first.
