Ochre cord brings a sunny, retro note to a white window seat while cream pillows keep it soft.
A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A mustard corduroy window seat cushion, sized to the sill
A sunny cushion on a white window seat, with old books standing up on top. Before you fall for the color, neighbor, let's talk about how tall it ought to be.
The quick answer
For most window seats a 3 or 4 in (7.5 or 10 cm) cushion is right: 3 in gives a neater, lower profile under a sill, and 4 in gives more cushioning. Every extra inch raises the seat and eats window height, so measure the finished bench top first, then add the thickness to the platform height.
Why this cushion looks comfortable before anyone sits
Some cushions look comfortable from across the room before anybody tries them. This is one.
It fills the whole ledge, wall to wall, and stands about a hand tall. On a narrow seat that reads generous without crowding the window. The top of the cushion still sits well below the sill, so the books standing up on it have room, and so would your elbows.
The color is mustard ochre in corduroy, and that is a bold choice. The ribs split the yellow into thin stripes of light and shadow, which gives it a velvety depth instead of a flat yellow. Nothing else loud sits nearby. The pillows are a cream chunky knit and an oatmeal linen, with the flat linen in front so the pair doesn't bulk up. The botanical books are faded, the framed print is sepia, and the only color allowed to argue with the ochre is the pothos in its terracotta pot.
Here is the proportion lesson hiding in the picture. Pillows against the wall take inches off the depth you can actually sit in; a backrest cushion alone takes roughly 3 in (7.5 cm). On a shallow window seat cushion, fewer pillows and a slimmer cushion keep it a seat rather than a shelf.
On my grandmother's porch the best seat was the one where your feet touched the boards and your back touched the wall. A window seat is no different. How deep is yours, front edge to wall?

Four numbers before you pick a thickness
Measure the finished bench top
Not the floor space and not the carpenter's plan. The top can differ from the room, so measure once the bench is built.
Measure the room under the sill
From the bench top to the underside of the sill or trim. A 3 in cushion suits tight spots, such as a 15 in (38 cm) gap below a sill.
Add thickness to platform height
Platform plus cushion gives the finished seat height, minus a little settle once you sit. The seat height calculator does the sum.
Take the back pillows off the depth
A backrest takes roughly 3 in (7.5 cm) off the usable depth. Standard backs are 16 in (40 cm) tall and made as long as the seat.
The window seat that didn't exist yet
A homeowner wrote to the workshop before the carpenter had built a thing. They sent room measurements and asked for a budget figure for one seat cushion, three backrests and two armrests. The workshop gave an estimate piece by piece and added one warning: the final bench top size would be needed before cutting, because it can differ from the floor space.
That warning is the whole lesson. Frames, trim and overhangs change the numbers between the plan and the wood, and walls are seldom square. Get a price early if it helps you plan, but order the cushion after the bench is built and measured. Our thickness Pattern will be waiting.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Can you make a one-piece L-shaped seat cushion with backrests for our dining nook?
The workshop's answerYes, L-shaped seat and back cushions are made regularly. Send a sketch measuring both runs of the L, corner to corner, and say whether any part is angled. Add a photo of the nook and a picture of the backrest style you like, and the workshop will quote.
- A common question
Is the backrest as long as the seat cushion, and how tall is it?
The workshop's answerYes, the seat and backrest are made the same length, so a 59 in (150 cm) seat comes with a 59 in back. The standard backrest is 16 in (40 cm) tall and can be made taller. Round armrests are made 4 in (10 cm) shorter than the seat depth.
- A common question
What thicknesses do you make, and which would you pick for a window seat?
The workshop's answerThe standard thicknesses are 2, 3, 4 and 5 in, all at the same price. Most buyers choose 3 or 4 in: 3 in gives a neater, lower profile on a window seat, and 4 in gives more cushioning.
A window seat cushion 3 in thick sits neat under a tight sill, and 4 in feels plusher. Every extra inch raises the seat and eats window height.

Questions buyers ask next
What is the thinnest standard window seat cushion?
2 in (5 cm) is the thinnest standard thickness. It suits a bench that already sits high, where a thicker cushion would push the seat toward the sill. Write any other thickness you need in the order note.
How much does a cushion sink when you sit on it?
A little. Platform height plus cushion thickness gives the finished seat height, minus some settle: a 3 in cushion may ride about 2 1/2 in under you. Allow for that when the seat has to clear a sill.
Does corduroy look different from different angles?
Yes. Corduroy shades with the nap, much like velvet, looking lighter one way and richer the other. Every panel of a cushion should be cut with the ribs running the same way, or the pieces read as two colors.
When should I order cushions for a new built-in window seat?
After the carpenter finishes. The bench top can differ from the floor plan, so measure the finished top wall to wall at the back, the middle and the front, and give the smallest width.
