A dusty rose corduroy window seat cushion, and how thick it ought to be
A letter from the porch about a pink bench in low sun, and the one measurement most people forget to think about.
SaveThe quick answer
Size a window seat cushion's thickness to the bench, not to habit: the standard is 4 in (10 cm), 3 in gives a lower, neater seat, and 6 or 6.5 in has been made on request for deep lounging. Here a dusty rose wide-wale corduroy cushion runs the full depth of the drawer base and stands about as tall as the top drawer rail.

Dear neighbor,
A letter about a pink bench in low sun
Pull up a chair, because the sun is low and this bench looks its best right now.
What you're looking at is a white built-in bench with brass-pull drawers, an oak ledge at one end, and a window seat cushion in dusty rose wide-wale corduroy. No piping. Just a box edge and ribs.
Look at the ribs first. They run the length of the bench, and that stretches a short seat so it looks longer than it is. Turn them crosswise and the same bench would look chopped.
Now the proportion. The cushion runs the full depth of the drawer base, front to back, with no ledge of white paint showing. And it stands roughly as tall as the top drawer rail. That is what makes the bench read as upholstered instead of padded. Too thin and it looks like a placemat on a cabinet. Too thick and your knees end up higher than your hips.
Then the pillows. Three cream sherpa ones make a soft, plain wall along the back. One rose velvet pillow repeats the seat color in a different pile, so the pink doesn't sit there all alone. It is the pillow everybody will reach for first, and that is the point of it.
Pampas grass in a hammered brass vase, brass bar pulls on the drawers and a stack of books on the oak ledge all catch that gold sun and warm the pink. The hardware was matched to the vase, so the metal reads as one thread.
What does your bench measure from the floor to the top, and how deep is it? Run those two numbers through the seat height calculator before you pick a thickness, and read the window seat cushion thickness Pattern while you're at it.
Pinned by Rosa: five spots on the drawer bench
Five pins cover the rose wide-wale seat, the velvet accent, the sherpa backdrop, the pampas in brass and the drawer pull that matches it.

- Rose wide-wale seat
The ribs run the length of the bench, which stretches a short seat visually.
- Velvet accent pillow
Same pink as the seat but in velvet, so color repeats while the pile changes.
- Sherpa backdrop pillow
Cream sherpa gives a soft, plain wall behind the only colored pillow.
- Pampas in brass
Brass and dried grass catch the low sun and warm the pink.
- Brass drawer pull
Hardware finish was matched to the vase so metal reads as one thread.

Three thicknesses on the same drawer bench
| Thickness | How it reads | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 3 in (7.5 cm) | Low and neat, more white bench showing | Perching, short seats, sills close above |
| 4 in (10 cm), the standard | Upholstered without bulk | Most reading nooks and window benches |
| 6 to 6.5 in (15 to 16.5 cm) | Plush and daybed-like | Deep benches meant for lounging; check knee height first |
Stripes on the sides, and an iron set too hot
A buyer in the US, back for a second order, had orange corduroy cushions photographed before they shipped. The side edges didn't show the vertical lines the listing photo had, and the buyer asked for them. The workshop re-made the cushions in 2 days.
Next came a symmetrical angled bench, with breaking-point sides of 1.5, 12 and 9.5 in, ordered through the 21.5 x 68 in option in an orange linen-look fabric with contrast trim. It fitted perfectly. Then the cover met a hot iron, and the 'linen' melted, because linen-look fabric is synthetic. The workshop made a replacement cover at a reduced cost, with new piping.
Two lessons from one porch. Check which way the ribs or stripes run on the side edges, not only the top. And iron a linen-look cover on low heat, if at all. The Pattern on corduroy wale and nap direction shows what to ask for.
Three bench-cushion questions: cost, a 30 x 84 in size, thickness
- A common question
What does a made-to-measure bench cushion cost?
The workshop's answerIt depends on the size and the shape. Pick your size range on the listing and the current price shows up, already discounted; check the shipping line before you pay. Long runs, trapezoids and thick corduroy pairs, such as two 4 in cushions at 156 x 20 in and 120 x 20 in, are quoted from your exact measurements.
- A common question
My bench is 30 x 84 in and I don't see that size in the dropdown. Can you still make it?
The workshop's answerYes. Choose the size range your measurements fall into, for example 30 to 32 in wide and 82 to 84 in long, then type your exact dimensions in the personalization note. The cushion is made to exactly those numbers, at the listed price for that range.
- A common question
How thick are your bench cushions, and can I choose something different?
The workshop's answerThe standard for bench and floor cushions is 4 in (10 cm). Custom orders have also been made at 3 in, 6 in and 6.5 in. Put the thickness you want in your request.

A window seat cushion looks upholstered, not padded, when it runs the full depth of the bench and stands about as tall as the top drawer rail.

Questions buyers ask next
Should corduroy ribs run along a window seat or across it?
Along the length usually flatters a short bench, because the lines carry the eye end to end. Whichever you choose, check the side edges too; buyers notice when the ribs on the gusset don't match the listing photo.
Can I iron a linen-look cushion cover?
Carefully, or not at all. Linen-look fabrics are synthetic, and one cover melted under a hot iron. Use the lowest setting, or hang the cover and let the creases relax on their own.
How do I style one colored window seat cushion so it doesn't look lonely?
Repeat its color once in a different texture. Here a rose velvet pillow echoes the rose corduroy seat, while cream sherpa pillows and brass details keep everything else quiet.
