A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A teal corduroy window seat cushion by the bookcase, and how thick it ought to be
A letter from the porch about a room with no porch at all: a white window seat, a wall of old books and a cushion thick enough to forget the lid underneath.
SaveThe quick answer
For a reading window seat, 4 in (10 cm) is the standard cushion thickness and gives a plush, built-in look; 3 in sits neater under a low sill, and 2 in suits a seat that is already high. Add the thickness to the seat height, allow a little settle, and measure the inside length the cushion must fill.

Dear neighbor,
A letter about the teal seat by the bookcase
There is a photograph on my worktable I keep coming back to. A white paneled window seat runs the full reveal until it meets a dark wood bookcase, floor to ceiling, packed with old leather-bound books. On the seat sits a box cushion in teal green corduroy, self piped, and thick enough for a long read without feeling the lid underneath.
Let me talk proportion first, because that is what makes this seat work. A window seat cushion is three numbers pulling against each other: how high the seat is, how deep it is, and how thick you make the cushion. Every extra inch of thickness lifts you an inch closer to the sill and takes an inch of legroom. Here the cushion is plump, yet the window still has room above it and your feet still find the rug.
Then color. Teal is exactly right beside those oxblood and tan spines. Green-blue complements them and calms the busy shelves, where a pale neutral would look washed out next to so much heavy wood. The corduroy's ribbed texture holds its own against the leather, and the navy in the Persian rug links to the cool side of the teal.
The little things tell the story. The brass picture light makes the nook glow in the evening. The mahogany side table carries a stack of books, reading glasses and a glasses case, so nobody has to ask what this seat is for. The framed picture above and the blue pots in the garden beyond just finish the sentence.
If you want the numbers laid out, try the seat height calculator, and look through corduroy for a deep jewel tone of your own.
Pinned by Rosa: five things in the library corner
Five pins walk from the teal seat across to the bookcase, up to the brass light and down to the rug, the way your eye travels at dusk.

Four thicknesses against one window seat
| Thickness | What it does | When I'd choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 2 in (5 cm) | Thinnest standard foam; the recommended minimum for sitting | The seat is already high |
| 3 in (7.5 cm) | Neat, low profile; may ride about 2 1/2 in under you | A low sill or window just above the seat |
| 4 in (10 cm) | The standard; a plush, built-in look | Long reads like the one in this photo |
| 5 in (13 cm), or 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) made to order | Lounging depth; eats legroom and window height | A low, deep seat meant for curling up |
Two inches too long, at both ends
A customer wrote to the workshop about a floor-level daybed sofa in an apartment. They ordered covers for two mattresses they already had, plus L-shaped backrest cushions. The backrests arrived about 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) too long, and the armrests would not line up.
Turning them around didn't help, because the extra length was at both ends. When they rechecked, they found they had given the outside measurements. The workshop remade the L-shaped backrests at the corrected size free of charge: arms at 35 1/2 in (90 cm) and back sections at 37 1/2 in (95 cm), for a 74 3/4 in (190 cm) back in total. The customer also ordered a mustard mattress cover, zipped bolster covers at 8 x 24 in (20 x 61 cm) and 4 3/4 x 22 in (12 x 56 cm), and small corduroy cushions about 12 x 16 in (30 x 40 cm).
The lesson carries straight to a window seat: measure the inside length each cushion has to fill, not the outside of the frame. A few inches of overhang shows. The Pattern on measuring a window seat cushion goes step by step.
Did you measure your window seat inside the reveal, or across the trim?
Buyer questions: cats, curves and a backrest ordered by mistake
- A common question
We have two cats. Which fabric will tempt them least to scratch?
The workshop's answerChoose from the pet-friendly chart. Those fabrics are tightly woven, less attractive to claws and more durable against them.
- A common question
Can you make a cushion that isn't rectangular, with rounded ends or a cut-out?
The workshop's answerYes. Send a drawing on paper with every dimension marked in inches or centimeters, including rounded corners, joints and cut-outs, and the workshop quotes from the drawing. A rounded-end breakfast nook set was quoted exactly this way.
- A common question
I ordered only the L-shaped backrest by mistake when I wanted the whole sofa. Can I cancel?
The workshop's answerYes. When an order holds only a backrest, the workshop messages the buyer to confirm before making it. A mistaken order is cancelled and refunded, and the full sofa, with an open or closed corner, is chosen from the same listing's options.

Questions buyers ask next
What cushion color works next to a dark wood bookcase?
A deep jewel tone in a textured cloth. Teal corduroy complements the oxblood and tan of old leather spines and calms busy shelves, where a pale neutral would look washed out beside heavy, traditional wood.
How do I measure a window seat that runs into a bookcase?
Inside the reveal, from the wall to the side of the bookcase, at both the back and the front. If the two numbers differ, send both. The cushion is made to the exact measurements you give, so take them where the cushion will actually sit.
Which thickness suits a window seat used for long reads?
Usually 4 in (10 cm), the standard, which gives a plush, built-in look and enough padding that you stop feeling the lid. Go to 5 in, or 6 to 8 in made to order, only when the seat is low and deep enough to lounge.
