Ivory chaise lounge cushion, navy piping, and a year of rooftop weather

Golden hour on a high roof. Teak chaise, ivory cushion, navy line. Pretty in June. Here is what the other eleven months do to it.

The quick answer

An ivory sunbed cushion on an open roof deck lasts longest in a water-repellent, UV-resistant outdoor fabric, tied to the frame against wind and stored indoors over winter. The standard foam is not quick-dry and has no mesh drainage base, so it handles sun and showers, not weeks of rain.

Three outdoor questions, before the photograph

  1. A common question

Can I have white linen with black piping on cushions that live outside?

    The workshop's answer

Not in real linen; it isn't suited to outdoor use. White linen with black piping works indoors. For outside, choose from the outdoor charts, where any color and piping combination is possible too.

  2. A common question

I need eight outdoor cushions in two custom sizes. What's the simplest way to order them together?

    The workshop's answer

Choose the size option the workshop names, set the quantity to eight, and type the real sizes in personalization: four at 19 x 22½ in (48 x 57 cm), four at 23¼ x 22½ in (59 x 57 cm).

  3. A common question

Should I send you the size of the bench, or of my old cushions?

    The workshop's answer

If the old cushions fit the way you like, send their dimensions. If they never fit well, or you want a different thickness, measure the bench itself.

Now, the reading

What the roof deck tells me

The cushion is a long box in ivory outdoor cloth with navy piping, laid on a slatted teak chaise. It breaks in two exactly at the hinge, so the back can rise without the fabric bunching. That is the first thing I check on any chaise lounge cushion: where the frame folds, the cushion folds.

The navy line is not decoration. Against silver-gray boards and a pale sky, an all-ivory cushion reads as a flat slab. Piping draws the outline, the way a dark boot stripe does on a white hull.

Styling is thin on purpose. One round side table, one glass of water with lime, one magazine. The table keeps drinks off the ivory, and spills are ivory's main enemy. The olive tree's silver leaves repeat the weathered deck. The grasses in their pots lean with the wind.

Five marks on the chart

Where my eye stopped, from the hinge to the olive tree.

  1. Ivory seat section

A plump boxed seat softens the slatted teak without hiding its warm edge.

  2. Hinged back cushion

The cushion breaks at the chaise hinge, so the back can rise without bunching.

  3. Navy piping line

Dark piping outlines the chaise against the pale deck and sky.

  4. Magazine on side table

A side table keeps drinks off the cushion; spills are ivory's main enemy.

  5. Potted olive tree

Silver olive leaves repeat the weathered gray of the deck.

A real project

The camper bench that started with the seat

A couple converting a camper van wrote to the workshop about a bench seat and backrest. They re-measured the base at 52 x 17¼ in (132 x 44 cm), kept the standard 4 in seat and chose a thinner 2 in back at 49 x 8¾ in (124.5 x 22 cm), in burnt orange.

Right order: seat thickness first, back second. In a van, a thin back hands depth back to the seat. A chaise works the same way: the seat thickness decides where the back cushion starts at the hinge.

Sizes
Seat 52 x 17¼ x 4 in; back 49 x 8¾ x 2 in
Fabric
Burnt orange

The lesson: Choose the seat thickness first, then size the back cushion to it.

Spring to frost: the chaise through the year

Spring. Carry the cushion out and check the foam is dry through.

Summer. The workshop's outdoor fabrics are woven polyester with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish, in roughly 150 to 200 colors. On a roof there is nothing between cushion and sky, so ivory will show the season; a fabric protectant spray helps. Wind is summer weather up here too. One chaise cushion is light enough to lift in a gust, so ask for ties sewn into the seams and knot them under the frame.

Fall. Water-repellent means showers bead and run off. It does not mean waterproof. The standard foam is not quick-dry and there is no mesh drainage bottom, so after a soaking, bring the cushion under cover and let it dry through.

Winter. Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything. Store it clean, dry and indoors. More in winter storage for outdoor cushions.

A chaise lounge cushion should break exactly where the frame hinges, so the back rises without the fabric bunching.

Questions buyers ask next

Can outdoor cushions stay out in the rain all season?

They handle sun and showers, not weeks of uncovered rain or snow. With no quick-dry foam or mesh drainage base as standard, shelter or indoor storage is best.

How do I keep a chaise cushion from blowing away?

Ask for fabric ties sewn into the seams where the frame has something to knot around, such as the back corners. Give the position and length of each tie when you order.

Is an ivory outdoor cushion a mistake?

Not if you plan for it. Ivory shows spills first, so keep a side table for drinks, use a protectant spray, and wash the zip-off cover at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.
