Gray striped bench cushions under a pale blue damask backrest, and how each piece stays in place
Élodie reads a low oak platform sofa in soft grays: first the palette, then the quieter question of ties, non-slip bases and where the zipper hides.

The quick answer
Striped bench cushions on a smooth oak platform stay put best with a non-slip base, a fabric backing that covers the whole underside and will not damage wood. Put zippers on the back edge, where the backrest hides them, and ask for stripes to run front to back on every seat so the pieces line up.
Swatch strip: four soft grays, one oak, one leaf
- Dove gray#A9A8A3The broad seat stripe
- Chalk white#F2F0EAThe stripe's ground, shared with the damask
- Pale blue-gray#A7B4BCThe damask backrest, a cooler cousin of the seats
- Honey oak#C49A63The platform edge, left showing as a clean band
- Cream weave#E6DCC8The rug, warming the floor under all that gray
- Ficus green#4F6B3EThe single tree that gives a low piece its height
Pinned by Élodie: stripe, scroll, oak, leaf
Four pins: two for the fabrics, one for the flush oak edge and one for the tree that lifts the eye.

- Gray-white striped seats
Wide stripes run front to back on every seat, so the three cushions line up as one.
- Damask back cushion
A soft damask on the back sets scroll against stripe while staying in the same gray.
- Oak platform edge
Cushions stop flush with the frame so the oak shows as a clean band.
- Ficus tree
A single tree behind the arm adds height to a very low piece.

Stripe against scroll, and what holds them on smooth oak
Two patterns on one sofa, my friends, and not a quarrel between them. The seats wear a wide dove-gray stripe; the backrest wears a pale blue-gray damask with soft scrolls. They agree because they share a ground: the same chalky white sits under both. The patterns differ; the colors do not. The eye sits down first, and here it finds nothing to argue with.
The stripes run front to back on every seat, so three cushions read as one long surface. That is written in the order notes, not left to luck; the stripe direction Pattern shows how to ask. The damask back is one long piece, which gives the scrolls room to repeat without a seam cutting through them.
Now the part nobody photographs. A low oak platform is smooth, and smooth wood lets a cushion drift every time someone sits down hard.
Ties suit slatted chairs and frames with rails to wrap around. A platform has nothing to tie to, so ties would only dangle.
A non-slip base is the answer here. It is a fabric backing, not glue or rubber, so it will not harm the oak. It covers the entire underside, never a partial strip, and nobody sees it.
Zipper placement finishes the job. Ask for the zipper on the back edge of each seat, where the backrest hides it. The ties and non-slip Pattern goes further, and the damask and jacquard shelf holds the scrolls.
Does your bench have rails to tie to, or a smooth top like this one?
Three benches, two fabrics and a 4 in bolster
An interior designer in the US wrote to the workshop with three benches to dress at once. Two slim pads, 60½ x 21 x 2 in (154 x 53 x 5 cm) and 68 x 21 x 2 in (173 x 53 x 5 cm), each came with a slim bolster just 4 in (10 cm) across, in Mushroom Taupe 108. The third was a deeper 77½ x 25 x 3 in (197 x 64 x 8 cm) cushion in L-24.
The workshop added same-color piping at no charge and offered a trade discount on a first order. The quoted timeline was 7 to 9 days of production, then 3 to 5 days for delivery.
What I admire is the bolster. A standard bolster would have swamped a 2 in pad. By naming a 4 in diameter, the designer kept the proportion right. Give the diameter, always; the bolster size Pattern shows why, and more long seats sit among the bench cushions.

Buyer questions: tough fabric, grippy bases and matching piping
- A common question
Which of your fabrics holds up best to kids using the bench every day?
The workshop's answerThe velvet range. It is very strong, resists the wear and tear of daily use by children, and cleans up easily when spills happen.
- A common question
Will the non-slip base damage the wood of my bench, and does it cover the whole bottom?
The workshop's answerIt will not damage wood: the non-slip base is a fabric backing, not an adhesive or rubber coating, so it is safe on wooden benches, even an heirloom chest. It covers the entire underside and cannot be done as a partial strip with a fabric border. Because it sits underneath, it is not visible.
- A common question
I want piping in the same fabric as the cushion, not a contrast color. How do I ask for that?
The workshop's answerWrite 'piping same color' with the fabric code in the personalization box, for example 'piping same color N02', and the piping is made from the main fabric.
A non-slip cushion base is a fabric backing, not glue or rubber: it covers the whole underside, stays out of sight and will not damage a wooden bench.

Questions buyers ask next
Can a striped seat and a damask backrest share one bench?
Yes, if they share a color. A stripe on the seats and a damask on the back look calm together when both sit on the same white or gray ground. Change the scale and the motif, but keep the palette, so the eye reads one piece.
Why skip ties on a low oak platform sofa?
Ties need something to wrap around, such as a rail, spindle or slat. A solid platform has none, so ties would only dangle. A full non-slip fabric base does the job instead and stays hidden under the cushion.
Where should the zipper go on a seat cushion that sits against a backrest?
On the back edge. The backrest covers that edge, so the zipper is out of sight from the room, and the cover still comes off for washing. Ask for it in your order notes if the listing does not mention placement.
What bolster diameter suits a thin 2 in bench pad?
A slim one. One designer paired 2 in (5 cm) bench pads with bolsters just 4 in (10 cm) in diameter, so the roll stayed in proportion with the seat. Always state the bolster diameter rather than relying on a standard size.
