A graffiti-print window seat cushion under a sash window, set up for company
Rosa writes a letter about a loud little window seat that seats company well: the print, the pillows, and a cushion sized to sit just inside the ledge.
SaveThe quick answer
A window seat cushion meant for guests should sit just inside the ledge, be about 4 in (10 cm) thick, and have a non-slip base or ties so it stays put when people perch on the front edge. Drop the fraction, not the inch: a 38 3/4 x 25 3/4 in (98 x 65 cm) ledge took a 38 x 25 in cushion.

Dear neighbor,
A letter about the window everybody ends up in
Every house has one spot guests drift toward when the living room fills. In this house it's a white paneled window seat under a sash window, looking out on a red-brick street, and somebody gave it a graffiti-print cushion in black, hot pink, turquoise and yellow.
I laughed when I saw it, and then I wanted to sit there. A print this busy only behaves when everything around it keeps quiet, and here the box, the sill and the linen roman blind are all plain white.
The cushion stands about a third of the box height, a good perch for sitting up or stretching out. It's piped in its own fabric, so the print wraps over the front edge, where guests sit balancing a plate.
Each pillow borrows one color from the print: - Mustard, with a ruffle, pulls out the yellow ink and softens the corner. - Hot pink bouclé adds texture without adding another pattern. - A pink mushroom lamp on a pink side table repeats that pink at the far end, so the color travels across the nook.
The rest is easy company: paperbacks and trailing pothos on a wall shelf, a pilea in terracotta on the sill, a bird of paradise in a cream planter, a rice-paper globe overhead, a sisal-look carpet underfoot. When the party comes, the pillows go on the floor and the seat makes room.
Who always ends up on your window seat when the house fills?

Pinned by Rosa: the sash-window nook
Five pins, from the graffiti print on the seat to the pink lamp carrying its color across the nook.

- Graffiti print cushion
A print this busy only works when the box, sill and blind around it stay plain white.
- Mustard ruffle pillow
Pulls the yellow ink out of the print and gives the corner a soft frilled edge.
- Pink bouclé pillow
Bouclé against a smooth printed cover adds texture without adding another pattern.
- Self-piped front edge
Piping in the same print lets the pattern wrap the edge unbroken.
- Pink mushroom lamp
Repeats the pillow pink at the far end so the color travels across the nook.

A 38 3/4-inch ledge and a 38-inch cushion
A buyer messaged the workshop with her window ledge measured at 38 3/4 x 25 3/4 in (98 x 65 cm) and asked which size to order. The workshop added a 38 x 25 in (97 x 64 cm) option to the listing, so the cushion would sit just inside the ledge instead of hanging over it.
She noted the green fabric from the first listing photo in her order comments. She was picturing about 5 in (13 cm) of height, so the workshop told her plainly: the cushion would be 4 in (10 cm).
Two habits worth copying before you host anyone. Round the size down by the fraction so the cushion sits inside the ledge. And confirm the thickness as its own line; the number in your head and the one on the listing can differ. Measuring help is in how to measure a window seat cushion.
Seating company well: what a hosting window seat needs
A window seat for guests works harder than a reading perch: people sit on the front edge and get up often.
- Size it inside the ledge. Dropping the fraction lets the cushion look built in.
- Keep it near 4 in (10 cm). Enough to sit on through a long evening.
- Add grip at order time. On shallow seats, buyers whose cushions crept forward were pointed to a non-slip base or ties, and both are easiest to add when you order. See ties and non-slip bases.
- Split a long run. Very long seats are made as two or more cushions, which are easier to handle.
- Keep pillows loose. They come off when the seat needs room.

Buyer questions: big seats, long seats, and which side is the width
- A common question
How are big custom corduroy or velvet window seat cushions priced?
The workshop's answerEach one is quoted on its size, thickness and fabric. Past quotes include a 26 x 65.5 in (66 x 166 cm) cushion at 9 in (23 cm) thick, velvet bench mattresses at 27 x 55 in and 27 x 62 in (69 x 140 and 69 x 158 cm), and a pair of corduroy cushions on 3 in (8 cm) foam. Smaller sizes, like 12 x 32 in, can be added as an option on request.
- A common question
I need to cover a seat about 205 in (522 cm) long. Do you make custom sizes that big?
The workshop's answerYes. A seat that long is made in two pieces of about 103 in (261 cm) each; you add two cushions to the cart through the listing. Button tufting is offered too, though for a 206 x 16 in (522 x 40 cm) run the tufted quote came out noticeably higher than the plain one.
- A common question
On your size options, which measurement is the width and which is the length?
The workshop's answerWidth is the short side of the cushion and length is the long side. For a window sill of 105 x 29 in (267 x 74 cm), you'd choose the 27-29 in width range and the 101-105 in length range, then write the exact size, for example 28.5 x 104.5 in, in the personalization box.

Questions buyers ask next
Can a busy print work on a window seat cushion?
Yes, if the surroundings stay plain. A multicolor print can carry a whole alcove when the box, sill and blind are white. Self piping in the same print lets the pattern wrap the front edge without a break.
Should a window seat cushion match the ledge size exactly?
Close to it. Dropping the fraction, as with a 38 x 25 in cushion for a 38 3/4 x 25 3/4 in ledge, lets it sit just inside the edge. Taking off a full inch or more leaves a visible gap.
How do I choose pillows for a patterned window seat cushion?
They don't need to match; they need to relate. Pull one color from the print for each pillow, change the texture instead of adding more pattern, and repeat one color at the far end with a lamp or vase.
