A letter about a golden banquette cushion and the breakfasts it will survive
Maggie writes to the owner of a white settle, a sunny window and a household that eats toast over the seat.
SaveThe quick answer
A banquette cushion in a busy kitchen ages well when the cloth is tightly woven, the color is a warm mid-tone like golden mustard, and the box edge is piped to hold its line. Mid-tones hide crumbs and hair, a tight weave gives both less to grip, and a straight front welt still looks tidy after years of sliding in and out.

Dear reader,
A letter from the piping table
I have studied this settle all morning, and I believe it will outlast most of your mugs.
It is a white slatted-back bench, built in beside a butcher-block counter, with a round breakfast table pulled close. The cushion is golden mustard in a basketweave outdoor acrylic, box-edged and self-piped, and it runs the whole seat right into the corner. No gap at the counter end for crumbs and crayons to vanish into. I approve.
The gold was not chosen to match the white cabinets. It matches the butcher block and the sunflowers in the white pitcher, which is why the kitchen looks planned rather than decorated. The black-and-white check pillow adds pattern without a second color, and the cream fringed throw softens the slats. The newspaper, the mug and the suede slippers under the bench tell you the rest: this is the everyday seat.
Right, then. The question that matters is not how it looks this morning. It is how it looks after a year of toast, dogs, children and that sunny window. What does your settle measure, wall to counter end?
More built-ins live in banquette cushions and kitchen nook cushions, and kitchen banquette fabric weighs the other cloths.

The daily-life test, item by item
- Crumbs: golden mustard is a warm mid-tone, so toast crumbs and sesame seeds don't shout the way they would on navy or white.
- Pets: a tight basketweave gives claws and hair less to catch than a loose weave or a long pile.
- Spills: blot at once, never rub, and keep the stain first-aid Pattern bookmarked.
- Sun: a breakfast-nook window is some of the strongest light in the house, and outdoor acrylic is made to hold its color there.
- Kids: the front welt takes the knees and sticky hands, so a straight, well-set piping line is what keeps the cushion tidy.
- Corners: a cushion that fills the seat into the corner leaves nowhere for toys and crusts to hide.
The buyer who asked if velvet could take a kitchen
One buyer wrote in about a kitchen dining banquette of 56 3/4 x 17 3/4 in (144 x 45 cm). They asked for 5 in (13 cm) of thickness and learned the shop can go as thick as 15 3/4 in (40 cm), which is more cushion than any breakfast table wants.
They compared minty velvet 126 with ice blue 128 and T-310, chose the mint, and asked the question every kitchen owner asks: will velvet hold up in here? The shop said yes.
Then the sensible part. The 3 1/8 in (8 cm) and 4 in (10 cm) thicknesses cost the same, so price decided nothing and seat height decided everything. The final cushion was 57 x 17 3/4 x 4 in (145 x 45 x 10 cm), ordered through the 17 3/4 x 59 in (45 x 150 cm) size option with the real size in the note. The banquette thickness and table height Pattern has the numbers for yours.
Buyer questions: crooked nooks, odd sizes and backs on their own
- A common question
My breakfast nook is uneven: 31 3/4 in (80.5 cm) at the narrowest, 34 1/4 in (87 cm) at the widest, with trim in the way. Which width do I give you?
The workshop's answerSend a rough sketch with every measurement on it, not one number. The shop pauses production until the shape is confirmed. Mark any trim or wood that sticks out, since those throw measurements off, and remember that leaving a small gap is sometimes the simplest fix.
- A common question
I need 18 x 42 in, but the listing stops at 18 x 40 in. Will a slightly bigger size cost more?
The workshop's answerOften not. Small tweaks are usually made at the listed price if you write the real size in the order note: 18 x 42 in (46 x 107 cm) on the 18 x 40 in option, or 28 x 50 in (71 x 127 cm) on the 28 x 48 in option. Bigger jumps in length do carry a surcharge.
- A common question
Can I buy only the L-shaped backrests for my daybed, and do I need one or two?
The workshop's answerYes, choose the L-shaped backrest option; they are sold one at a time. Each covers a 39 x 39 in (about 100 x 100 cm) corner, so two span a 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm) sofa. One buyer used a pair on a 75 x 38 in (190 x 97 cm) daybed from another maker.

Have this made — ask Maggie’s workshop
Have the tape measure handy when they call. Old cushions shrink and sag; the seat underneath does not. — Maggie
Leave your details and the workshop will call you to confirm measurements, fabric, foam and piping. No prices, dates or payment on this page: it is a request, not an order.
Match a kitchen banquette cushion to the wooden countertop, not the cabinets. Golden mustard beside butcher block looks planned; white on white just disappears.

Questions buyers ask next
Is outdoor fabric a sensible choice for a kitchen banquette cushion?
It is a practical one. A tight outdoor acrylic weave is made for strong sun, which a breakfast-nook window supplies, and it gives crumbs and pet hair little to grip. Choose a solid mid-tone and a box edge so it still looks like indoor furniture.
What color banquette cushion hides crumbs best?
Warm mid-tones such as golden mustard, ochre or caramel. Toast crumbs are pale gold themselves, so they vanish into these shades, while navy, black and white show every one. A little pattern nearby helps too, which is why the check pillow earns its place.
Should a banquette cushion run right into the corner?
Yes, where the bench meets a wall or a counter end. A cushion that fills the seat into the corner leaves no gap for crumbs and toys, and the piping line runs unbroken. Measure the bench itself, not the old cushion you used to have.
How thick should a kitchen banquette cushion be?
Decide by table height. One kitchen bench of 57 x 17 3/4 in (145 x 45 cm) was made 4 in (10 cm) thick after the buyer learned that 3 1/8 in (8 cm) and 4 in cost the same. Check that knees still clear the tabletop.
