A custom bench cushion in three bouclé colors, and what keeps it in place

Dusty blue, caramel, cream: the same soft edge three times. The side view makes color easy, and it hides the question buyers forget to ask.

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion stays put with fabric ties where there is a frame, rail or slats to tie to, or with a non-slip base where it rests on a smooth, flat top. The non-slip base is optional and costs extra, so ask for it when you order, along with a zipper hidden on the underside.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

I want a very long tufted velvet seat, about 33 x 132 in (84 x 335 cm), with a 30 in (76 cm) back cushion. Can you make it?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop suggested two pieces of 33 x 66 in (84 x 168 cm) instead of one, ordered by choosing that size twice. Each piece can take armrests at both ends, so four in all.

  2. A common question

Which way will the stripes run on my bench cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Front to back, as standard. On a long cushion, side-to-side stripes would need several fabric widths stitched together, so front to back keeps the top seamless and durable. Some sizes can take horizontal stripes if you ask before production.

  3. A common question

I'm a designer ordering for a client. Do you offer trade pricing?

    The workshop's answer

It has been offered: one interior designer got a trade discount on a client order, and ongoing work was priced separately. Mention the client project in your first message.

Now, the reading

Three colors, one edge: reading the side view

Seen from the side, a stack of cushions tells the truth. These three share one thickness and one softly rounded, unpiped edge, so the only thing left to judge is color. The eye sits down first, and here it has an easy seat.

Dusty blue on top, the coolest note, where the daylight lands. Caramel in the middle, toasted and buttery, the warm hinge. Cream at the base, closest to the oak, so it reads almost as part of the bench. Cool, warm, neutral: a sequence that sits well on nearly any wood.

Bouclé loops catch light in tiny points, so even a plain color looks textured. Without piping, the edge rolls instead of creasing.

There are no props, only the oak bench with its joinery showing, a white baseboard and the oak floor. The corner joint is the ruler: it shows how deep a cushion looks against a real frame. It also tells you something, my friends. This top is smooth, with nothing to tie to, so the answer is a non-slip base. The Pattern on ties and non-slip bases sets out the rest. Where does your cushion sit: on slats, or on a smooth top?

  2. Caramel middle

Caramel between blue and cream is the warm hinge of the stack.

  3. Cream base

Cream at the bottom sits closest to the oak and reads as part of the bench.

  4. Oak corner joint

Visible joinery gives a real frame to judge the cushion thickness against.

One 90 in cushion instead of two halves

A buyer in the US first asked for a single 102 x 18 in (259 x 46 cm) bench cushion for a long built-in seat. The workshop offered two 51 in (130 cm) halves and confirmed one piece was possible. Then came samples; the first pack was lost by the carrier and sent again.

They chose a light green linen, a shade lighter than the swatch beside it, and ordered one continuous cushion, 90 x 18 in (229 x 46 cm). They loved how it sat, and came back for a matching round bolster, 6 in (15 cm) across and 67.5 in (171 cm) long, rushed so it reached the carrier within 2 to 3 days for an event.

The lesson: A long bench can take one continuous cushion; sample a subtle green before committing.

If you are torn between cushion colors, stack the swatches on your own bench in daylight: cool on top, warm in the middle, neutral at the base.

Questions buyers ask next

Does bouclé need piping to hold its edge?

No. Unpiped bouclé rolls over the edge in a soft curve and the loops carry the shape, as in this stack. For a sharper outline, piping in the same fabric draws it without adding a color.

Where should the zipper go on a bench cushion cover?

Hidden on the underside of a removable cover, as specified for one US bench cushion. You never see it, and the cover still comes off for washing.

Can a bench cushion over 100 inches long be one piece?

Yes. One piece was confirmed possible for a 102 in bench, though two 51 in halves were offered first. That buyer settled on a single 90 x 18 in (229 x 46 cm) cushion.
