A caramel bouclé custom bench cushion with a cocoa welt, and what it borrows from outdoor cushions
Caramel loops, one cocoa line, pale oak underneath. The most indoor of photographs hides three habits learned on the porch.

The quick answer
An indoor bench cushion can borrow three habits from outdoor cushions: piping one shade darker than the body fabric, a zippered cover that comes off, and a place out of strong, long sun. From indoor cushions it keeps the soft hand of bouclé, a cloth for indoors or under a roof, not for an open patio.
Caramel, cocoa and pale oak: the palette in five chips
Measured from the photograph in soft daylight; the names are mine.
- Caramel loop#C09D7AThe body cloth: close bouclé loops that read warm and soft.
- Cocoa welt#70472COne shade deeper and the darkest line in view; it draws the box and hides the handled edge.
- Toffee shadow#956A47Caramel on the shaded boxing strip, proof the welt stays inside one brown family.
- Light oak#CAB192The plinth: a blond wood that keeps the browns from going heavy.
- Chalk wall#D2C4B2Wall and floorboard light, a pale ground that lets the cocoa line lead.
Pinned by Élodie: four marks on one corner
Four pins on a single corner, from the cocoa welt to the lower seam that lands on oak.

- Cocoa welt at corner
A welt one shade darker than the caramel sharpens the corner without changing the color story.
- Caramel loop texture
Close caramel loops read warm and soft; the darker welt keeps them from looking fuzzy at the edge.
- Tall boxing strip
A generous boxing strip gives a comfortable seat height on a low plinth bench.
- Lower welt over oak
The lower welt lands right on the oak edge, a sign the cushion was cut to the frame.

Why the welt is cocoa, and what this bench borrowed from the porch
One seam tells the whole story. A caramel bouclé box cushion rests on a light oak plinth, and at its corner a cocoa brown welt, one shade deeper than the cloth, turns the edge into a drawn line. It is the darkest thing in view, so your gaze lands on the tailoring before anything else. The eye sits down first.
The loops read like the top of a crème brûlée: warm, soft, a little uneven. Without the welt they would blur at the edge. The boxing strip is tall, which lifts a low plinth to a kinder seat height, and the lower welt lands exactly on the oak edge, the mark of a custom bench cushion cut to its frame. No pillows, no throw: pale floorboards and a white wall keep the light even, so the only contrast is tonal.
Now the angle I promised, my friends: think like a porch cushion, stay a living room cushion.
Borrow from outdoors: - Plan for grime at the edge. Piping one shade deeper than the body hides handling and shows less wear than a cream welt. See contrast piping. - Plan to wash. Every foam cushion has a zippered, removable cover, hidden on the back edge or underneath. - Respect the sun. Indoor cloths have limited UV resistance and can fade in strong, long sun.
Keep from indoors: - The hand. The outdoor range is woven polyester with water-repellent, fade-resistant finishes. It works indoors, but it is less soft, and nothing in it feels like bouclé. - The wrap. Batting holds water, which is why outdoor cushions often go without it; indoors, polyester wadding around the foam fills the corners of the cover.
Bouclé comes from the indoor charts, happy under a roof and not on an open patio. Browse the bouclé and teddy library and indoor cushions on a covered porch. Which window does your bench face, and for how many hours of sun?
Two beige linens, one long bench, no guessing
One buyer wrote in about one long bench, about 131 in (332.5 cm) from end to end, to be covered by two cushions of about 65 1/4 x 19 3/4 in (166 x 50 cm) each. She had fallen for a beige linen in the listing photos.
Several beige linens on the chart sit very close in tone, so the workshop would not guess the code. It offered close-up photos of any codes she had in mind, so she could choose from the cloth rather than from a thumbnail.
I retell this one because caramel has the same trouble. Camel, toffee, caramel and honey sit side by side on a chart, and a screen shuffles them. A close-up taken in daylight settles what a thumbnail cannot.

Buyer questions: stripes at the corner, a green that isn't blue, a smaller L
- A common question
The stripes on my cushion don't run straight through on every side. Is that a mistake?
The workshop's answerNo. The craftsmen match the stripes on one face. As the fabric turns around the corners, a slight shift on the other sides can't be avoided, so find the matched face and turn that side out.
- A common question
Is L25 a true green, or does it lean blue?
The workshop's answerL25 is a dark, muted green with a very slight cool undertone. Under warm indoor light it reads deep green, and in cool daylight it can lean slightly teal. It is not a blue fabric.
- A common question
Could you make a smaller L-shaped floor sofa that fits within 90 x 65 inches?
The workshop's answerYes. Each piece is 39 in (99 cm) deep, so the L is built from one 65 in (165 cm) sofa and one 51 in (130 cm) sofa, for an overall 65 x 90 in (165 x 229 cm). It was quoted with 7 days of production plus 3 to 5 days of delivery.

Questions buyers ask next
Can outdoor fabric be used for an indoor bench cushion?
Yes. The outdoor range is woven polyester with water-repellent and fade-resistant finishes, and it works indoors too. It costs more than the indoor charts and feels less soft than velvet or bouclé, so choose it for spills and sun rather than for touch.
How does bouclé hold up on a screened porch?
Under a roof it is fine with care. Bouclé comes from the indoor charts, which are not made for open outdoor use and have limited UV resistance, so strong, long sun can fade it. Keep it out of rain and bring it inside for the off-season.
Is a darker welt better than cream piping on an everyday bench?
Usually, yes. A welt one shade darker than the body outlines the box and hides handling at the edge, where hands and heels land, so it shows less wear than cream. It also stays inside the same color family, so it never fights the cloth.
How do I choose between two close caramel codes?
Ask for close-up photos of both codes; daylight shots, studio shots and photos of finished cushions in that fabric are sent free by message. If they still look alike, order palm-sized swatches and hold them against your bench in daylight.
