A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A slim denim blue corduroy window seat cushion in a terracotta library nook
Pull up a chair. This nook has one blue cushion, two brass lamps and a lesson about proportion I learned from a bolster that nearly came out the size of a beach ball.
The quick answer
A window seat cushion in a tall built-in nook looks best slim, running wall to wall with no end gaps. Here a denim blue corduroy seat sits low against a terracotta paneled base, so the paneling, shelves and lamps carry the height. When you add bolsters, state both numbers: a 7 in diameter by 20 in long roll is very different from a 20 in diameter one.

SaveOne blue cushion in a room of terracotta
Everything in this little library is one color except the cushion. Shelves, paneling, window reveal: all the same terracotta. That's the trick, neighbor. Paint the whole built-in one shade and it reads as a single piece of carpentry, and whatever sits on top gets to be the star.
The star here is a window seat cushion in denim blue corduroy, the only cool color at eye level. It runs wall to wall between the bookcases, which a true built-in needs. No gaps at the ends for paperbacks, crumbs and the odd crayon to vanish into.
Now the proportion. The paneled base is tall; the cushion is slim. You might think a tall seat wants a fat cushion to match, but it's the other way around. A slim cushion lets the tongue-and-groove show, and the paneling is the handsome part. A plush one would swallow it.
The self piping keeps the edge tidy without adding a third color, and the corduroy ribs run one way, so the seat reads as one smooth band of blue in that soft gray daylight.
Then the props, each with a job. Two brass swing-arm lamps, one each side, make this an evening seat, not just a sunny-afternoon one. A ceramic bowl and a stack of magazines on the sill hold whatever you set down. The kilim underfoot repeats both the rust and the blue, so the cushion looks chosen with the room rather than bought for it. And the black wire lounge chair across the way is a second seat, because a nook is better for two.
For a nook like this, take the cushion color from your rug, not your paint. More ideas live under reading nook cushions. What color is the rug under your window?
Pinned by Rosa: five things this nook got right
Five pins, from the denim corduroy seat to the kilim that ties the blue and the rust together.

- Denim blue corduroy
The only blue surface at eye level, so it reads as the room's cool accent.
- Paneled seat base
Base, shelves and sill share one paint color, so it all reads as one piece of joinery.
- Brass swing-arm light
A reading light on each side makes this a seat for evenings, not just daylight.
- Kilim rug
The rug repeats both the rust and the blue, tying cushion to walls.
- Wire lounge chair
A second seat opposite makes the nook a place for two.
