A chocolate corduroy bench cushion on a cube storage bench, measured for company
A flat-pack cube bench, a slab of brown cord cut flush to the frame, and a place to put the overflow when the sofa fills up. My notes, with numbers.
SaveThe quick answer
A cube storage bench becomes real guest seating when its corduroy cushion is cut flush to the frame, with no overhang to dip when someone perches on the corner. Leave the piping off, as on this chocolate cord, give it a box edge, and keep a lumbar pillow and a throw nearby so the person on the end has something to lean on.
Field notes: a cube bench that takes the overflow
Line one in my notebook: overhang, 0 in. The cushion ends exactly where the bench ends, front and sides. That single number is why a white flat-pack cube bench reads as built-in furniture instead of a storage unit with a pad thrown on top.
For hosting it matters twice. A cushion that hangs past the frame dips when a guest perches on the far corner. One cut flush has solid frame under every square inch. Measure the outside of the frame top, not the pad that came with it, and let the bench cushion builder handle the arithmetic, partner.
The cloth is chocolate corduroy, box edge, no piping. Cord already carries parallel lines in its wale; a welt adds one more line at the edge and fights the rib. In late-afternoon light the pile shifts from brown toward bronze, right about when guests start arriving.
Props, ranked by how useful they are to a guest: - Leather lumbar pillow. Nearly the same brown as the seat, so the contrast is texture: smooth hide against ribbed pile. It is also the backrest for whoever takes the end. - Chunky cream knit throw. Draped over the end, it softens the square corner, and it is the first thing a chilly guest reaches for. - Two wicker baskets and a jute rug. The same honey tone as the walnut side table, the walnut storage box and the coffee table corner. That tone is the reason the cushion is brown. - Fiddle-leaf fig in a white planter. The only green, set behind the seat to add height to a low bench.
The white frame is the one cool note in the room. This is a bench cushion doing overflow duty in a living room, and it earns the job. What lives in your cubes right now? Pick the cushion color from that.
Pinned by Nate: the cube bench beside the sofa
Five pins, from the cord seat to the fig standing behind it.

- Chocolate cord cushion
Cut flush to the frame so a flat-pack bench looks made for it.
- Leather lumbar pillow
Nearly the same brown as the seat, so contrast comes from texture not color.
- Chunky knit throw
Draped over the end, it softens the square corner of the bench.
- Wicker basket
Basket tones echo the walnut and give the cushion color a reason.
- Fiddle-leaf fig
The only green, placed behind to add height at the back of the seat.

Notebook table: three trapezoids for a crowd
| Piece | Back | Front | Depth | Taper per side | Slanted side | Angle off square |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seat cushion (x2) | 24.4 in (62 cm) | 27.6 in (70 cm) | 27.2 in (69 cm) | 1.6 in (4 cm) | 27.2 in (69.1 cm) | 3.3° |
| Long bench | 73.2 in (186 cm) | 78.0 in (198 cm) | 27.2 in (69 cm) | 2.4 in (6 cm) | 27.3 in (69.3 cm) | 5.0° |
Two trapezoid seats, a 78-inch bench and a free calculator
A buyer wrote to the workshop needing seats for a crowd: two trapezoid seat cushions, 24.4 in (62 cm) at the back, 27.6 in (70 cm) at the front and 27.2 in (69 cm) deep, plus one long bench cushion, 73.2 in (186 cm) at the back and 78 in (198 cm) at the front at the same depth. All three at 5 in thick.
The workshop pointed them to its trapezoid listing. Then the buyer did the smart thing. With angles that slight, eyeballing the sides is a coin toss, so they ran the numbers through a free online isosceles trapezoid calculator and sent accurate side lengths.
Angles are just lengths in disguise. The table above shows why the check was worth it: the taper is only 1.6 in (4 cm) per side on the seats and 2.4 in (6 cm) on the bench, and that small offset is exactly what the pattern maker has to hit. The trapezoid cushion calculator does the same job on one screen.
- Sizes
- 2 seats 24.4 / 27.6 x 27.2 in (62 / 70 x 69 cm); bench 73.2 / 78 x 27.2 in (186 / 198 x 69 cm); all 5 in thick
The lesson: For shallow tapers, calculate the slanted side lengths; they are what the pattern maker needs.
Buyer questions: piping codes, add-on backs, a tricky corner
- A common question
The order form never asked me about piping color. How do I choose one?
The workshop's answerPick any code from the fabric charts and send it to the workshop in a message, for example L24 for a sage green. The order goes into production once that code is recorded.
- A common question
Can I add an L-shaped backrest to my ottoman later, or a straight back cushion between two corner pieces?
The workshop's answerYes. An extra L-shaped backrest turns an ottoman into a small sectional, and it can be bought later through the same listing. A straight 39 in (99 cm) cushion to sit between two corner pieces has been made to order as well.
- A common question
Can you make a corner window seat cushion that runs out onto the trim at both corners?
The workshop's answerYes, though it is genuinely difficult work, so the workshop gave it to its most experienced craftsman. A shape like that is sold through a private purchase link made for your order, which works like any normal checkout.
On the cutting table: the cube bench seat

| Piping | None; the wale supplies the lines |
| Frame | White cube storage bench with two wicker baskets |
| Partners | Brown leather lumbar pillow, chunky cream knit throw |
| Palette | Chocolate, ivory, walnut; the white frame as the one cool note |
| Best for | Extra living room seating when guests outnumber the sofa |

A bench cushion cut flush to a cube storage bench has solid frame under every inch, so the guest on the far corner doesn't sink off the edge.

Questions buyers ask next
How much overhang should a cushion have on a cube storage bench?
None, if you want it to look built in and to hold a guest sitting on the corner. Cut it to the outside of the frame top so every edge rests on something solid. On the bench in this Reading the cord stops exactly at the frame.
Why leave the piping off a corduroy bench cushion?
Corduroy already carries parallel lines in its wale. A welt adds another line at the edge that competes with the rib. A plain box edge lets the texture of the cord be the detail, as on this chocolate seat.
Can I use an online calculator for the slanted sides of a trapezoid bench?
Yes. One buyer used a free isosceles trapezoid calculator for seats 24.4 in (62 cm) at the back and 27.6 in (70 cm) at the front, 27.2 in (69 cm) deep, then sent the side lengths with the order.
What goes with a chocolate brown bench cushion in a living room?
Tones from the same family in different textures: a leather lumbar pillow, a cream knit throw, wicker baskets and walnut wood. Keep one cool note, like a white frame, and one green plant for height.
