  1. Round bolster backrest

The bolster diameter roughly matches the seat thickness, so seat and back read as one piece.

  2. Charcoal seat cushion

A dense charcoal weave with self piping keeps the front edge sharp on a minimal frame.

  3. Oak platform

Pale oak stops the dark cushion sinking into the gray concrete.

The lamp repeats the cushion's dark tone vertically and lights the seat from above.

A charcoal daybed cushion and bolster: porch rules on an indoor oak platform

One dark seat. One round bolster. One pale base. The rules come from outdoor seating; the softness stays inside.

The quick answer

A daybed cushion with a full-length bolster in the same fabric turns a low bed frame into a daybed sofa. Here a charcoal linen-look seat with self piping lies on a pale oak platform, and the bolster's diameter roughly matches the seat thickness, so seat and back read as one piece. Order each piece with its own size.

Pinned by Hana: five quiet points

Five pins, from the round bolster to the one canvas that carries all the pattern in the room.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Reading the plate: what is missing

Start with what is not there. No throw pillows. No pattern on the seat. No arms.

A charcoal daybed cushion lies on a low platform of pale oak, a drawer tucked below. A round bolster runs the full length behind it, in the same cloth. Its diameter is close to the seat's thickness, so the eye reads one shape, not two. That is the whole design.

The weave is dense. The piping is self, cut from the same fabric, so the front edge stays sharp without drawing a line. On a bare frame, that is enough.

Color does quiet work. Charcoal against raw concrete would sink. The pale oak base and a pale gray wool rug hold it up. A slim matte black floor lamp repeats the dark tone vertically and lights the seat from above.

The only pattern leans against the wall: an abstract canvas in black and cream. The herringbone floor adds grain below. Everything else waits. More low seats like this sit in daybed cushions.

What to borrow from outdoors, and what to keep inside

Outdoor seating has no room for fuss. Sun and rain see to that. Some of that plainness belongs indoors.

Borrow from outside: - One solid color on seat and bolster. Pattern goes on the wall. - A box edge with self piping. It holds a clean front line on a bare frame. - A bolster as the back. Swing beds do this. So does this daybed. - Pieces listed one by one. Seat, back, each bolster, each with its size.

Keep inside: - The hand of the cloth. A linen-look weave you want to touch. The family is in linen-look fabrics. - Lamp light over the seat for evenings. - A wool rug under bare feet.

For the bolster itself, see bolster diameter and length. What low frame do you already own?

Height is a feeling. A low seat asks for a calm room. One long bolster, and the room has a sofa.

A real project

A sofa by day, a reading bed by night

A parent wrote to the workshop about a gap. At the end of a son's bed, under a window, there was room for one more piece: a sofa by day and a reading bed at night.

They did not describe it. They listed it. A 39 3/8 x 78 3/4 in (100 x 200 cm) floor cushion. A 39 3/8 x 21 5/8 in (100 x 55 cm) back cushion. Two 31 1/2 in (80 cm) cylinder bolsters. All in the same dark green linen-look.

The workshop confirmed every piece could be made and sent one custom order link for the whole set. Four sizes, one color, one order. A swing bed is ordered the same way.

Buyer questions: covers, mattresses and two different heights

  1. A common question

Does the daybed cover set come with a mattress? How tall and how firm would it be?

    The workshop's answer

No. The set is the mattress cover, two backrests and two armrests. A mattress can be supplied at extra cost, and for sizes and materials the workshop points buyers to IKEA's own mattresses.

  2. A common question

Could you cover my twin daybed mattress and make the back pillows as well, stuffed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. One buyer had a 38 x 79 in (97 x 201 cm) twin mattress and wanted two stuffed L-shaped back pillows, about 20 in (51 cm) tall, running end to end. The workshop quoted the cover and both filled pillows as one set.

  3. A common question

I only need covers, for two twin mattresses of different heights. Can you do that?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Place one order per size and write the exact dimensions and color in the notes, for example 74 x 38 x 10 in (188 x 97 x 25 cm) and 74 x 38 x 8 in (188 x 97 x 20 cm) in the same corduroy. The workshop can hold the first cover and ship both together.

A full-length bolster in the seat's own fabric turns a low bed frame into a daybed sofa. Keep the bolster's diameter close to the seat thickness.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a daybed bolster be compared with the seat?

In this photo the round bolster's diameter roughly matches the seat's thickness. That keeps seat and back reading as one piece. A much thinner bolster looks like an afterthought; a much fatter one pushes you toward the front of a shallow seat.

Can a low platform bed become a sofa with cushions alone?

Yes, that is what this photo shows. A seat cushion cut to the platform and a full-length bolster in the same fabric make a plain plinth read as a daybed sofa. No new frame is needed, only fabric and fill.

Will a charcoal cushion disappear against a gray concrete wall?

It can. Here a pale oak base and a pale gray wool rug sit between the charcoal and the concrete, so the dark cushion keeps its outline. A black floor lamp repeats the tone higher up and ties it to the room.
