Candy pink stripes by the sea: a small window seat that feels larger
Élodie reads a white paneled seat under a sea-view window, where one stripe, one bare ledge and a few quiet props make a narrow spot feel open.
Candy pink stripes and a view of the sea: a seaside window seat kept deliberately simple.
The quick answer
A small window seat feels larger when the cushion stops short of one end to leave a bare painted ledge, stays a 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) box close to sill height, and uses a stripe whose white bands are as wide as the colored ones. Keep props on the sill so the whole cushion is for sitting.
Pink, white, and the blue beyond the glass
Candy pink beside a sea view sounds sweet enough to ache. It isn't, and the reason is in the white.
This white paneled seat sits in a seaside living room, under a window full of water. Look at the stripe on its window seat cushion. The white bands are as wide as the pink ones. That even rhythm lets the pink breathe, so it reads like a beach towel drying on a rail, not like frosting. Beyond the glass the sea adds pale gray and a wash of blue.
Let one color speak and the others listen. Here the pink speaks, and the water, the white paint and the pale wood floor listen. The cloth is a striped cotton, crisp rather than plush, which suits bright seaside daylight.
Three decisions that make a narrow seat generous
Small spaces reward restraint, my friends. This seat makes three choices worth copying.
- The cushion stops short. At the near end, a strip of painted bench is left bare. It becomes a ledge for a mug or a book, and it makes the cushion look built in rather than squeezed in. Decide this before you measure, because it changes the length you order.
- It stays low. A 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) box with self piping keeps the seat close to sill height, so the window stays the tallest thing in view. More on window seat cushion thickness.
- Props live on the sill. Two books and pampas grass in a white bud vase sit up there, leaving every inch of the cushion for sitting. The pampas is neutral, so pink stays the only color indoors. No throw pillows at all; with a view like that, a row of them would only argue with the window.
Would your seat look better filled wall to wall, or with a ledge left bare?
Pinned by Élodie: stripe, ledge, sill and sea
Five pins move from the pink front band to the bare painted ledge, the props on the sill and the water behind them.

- pampas in a white vase
A neutral stem keeps the sill quiet so the pink stays the only color.
- books on the sill
The sill holds the props, leaving the whole cushion free to sit on.
- pink stripe front band
White bands as wide as the pink keep the stripe fresh rather than sugary.
- piped end corner
The cushion stops short of the near end, leaving a strip of painted bench as a perch.
- sea view
A seaside view needs only a simple stripe, not a busy set of pillows.

Four velvet squares for a house with cats and kids
An interior designer wrote to the workshop about a dining nook for a client with cats and small children, and asked a fair question: velvet or linen?
The shop suggested velvet, since it washes below 86°F (30°C) and cleans easily. Then came a detail every designer knows. Standard swatches are small, about 1¼ to 1½ in (3 to 4 cm), too small to judge a color across a room. So the designer asked for 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) velvet squares in forest green, burnt orange, emerald and yellow, ordered through the samples listing with a note.
I understand completely. A pink stripe on a screen and a pink stripe in sea light are two different pinks. Bigger squares are the honest way to choose from swatches before you order.
Buyer questions: odd shapes, velvet washing, finding the price
- A common question
My bench isn't a perfect rectangle. How do I order a cushion with angles, notches or curves?
The workshop's answerUse the custom-shape (trapezoid) listing. Pick the size ranges for total length at the widest point and total depth, then upload your drawing with every edge measured, plus a photo if you have one. The cut follows the drawing; the totals only set the price range. Two different shapes means two orders.
- A common question
Can every cover come off to be washed, velvet included?
The workshop's answerYes. All covers come off with a hidden zipper and can go in the machine below 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, and that includes velvet.
- A common question
How do I find out what a bench cushion in my own measurements will cost?
The workshop's answerSelect your size ranges on the listing and the exact price shows; listed prices are already discounted. The shop has priced everything from a 57 x 17 3/4 in (145 x 45 cm) bench pad to a 118 x 18.5 in (300 x 47 cm) velvet trapezoid this way.

Color is easier to settle in a conversation than on a screen. Tell the workshop about the room and the light it gets, and the fabric choice follows. — Élodie

On a small window seat, stop the cushion short of one end. The bare painted strip becomes a ledge for a mug and makes the seat look built in.

Questions buyers ask next
Should a window seat cushion fill the whole recess?
Not always. Filling it wall to wall looks built in; stopping short of one end leaves a painted ledge for a mug or a book. Decide first, because that choice sets the length you order.
Will a pink striped cushion look too sweet in a coastal room?
Not if the white bands are as wide as the pink ones. The even rhythm keeps the color fresh, and a sea view adds the cool gray and blue that balance it.
Where should props go on a narrow window seat?
On the sill. Books, a vase or a candle up there leave the whole cushion free to sit on, and a neutral stem like pampas keeps the pink stripe as the room's only color.
Why ask for larger fabric swatches?
Small swatches of about 1¼ to 1½ in (3 to 4 cm) are hard to judge from across a room. Squares around 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) show how a color behaves in your own light.
